Chapter 229

Right then, a cold breeze rushed in between them, making Sera’s long hair flutter in the wind.
At the same time, red maple leaves scattered from their branches, and one of them landed on Sera’s hair.
Helios motioned to reach for the leaf on her hair, but Sera faltered and took a step back.
As his touch was refused, Helios lowered his hand, a bitter smile on his face. However, Sera couldn’t pay attention to anything else. Her thoughts were in disarray.
What did he mean, he missed her? Impossible.
He couldn’t have meant that.
Sera clasped the hem of her dress tightly in an attempt to keep her mind at bay.
She no longer wished to be swayed. Helios had already rejected her a month ago.
He was the one who asked her to maintain a strict line between them. It was no different from saying that she shouldn’t misunderstand what had happened at the imperial villa.
Yet later on, he too was the one who crossed that line when he met her at the opera house.
She could not allow it to happen for a second time.
“Your Majesty… I apologize in advance for my impertinence, however… I am not comfortable hearing such things. Those words—it feels like you’re giving me reasons to misunderstand once more.”
Perhaps because her heart was beating hard, but her voice started to tremble as well.
She didn’t know what kind of expression she was making. Sera just looked down on the floor.
“Reasons to misunderstand…”
Just like how he did in the imperial villa, Helios repeated the words.
But at this, Sera felt that this was all unfair. It’s frustrating her. It sounded as if he never thought that his actions would make people misunderstand in the first place.
“Quite honestly, I’m not comfortable running into Your Majesty at all. I had just pretended to be alright at the opera house, but I’m not as fine as you think I am. If it hadn’t been for Their Highnesses, I’d prefer not to meet Your Majesty ever again…”
Still with her head down, Sera realized that what she said had already gone far beyond the bounds of impudence. It was not necessary for her to vent her anger like this.
She no longer wished to speak with him here. All she wanted was to leave this place.
“Please forgive me for my discourtesy, Your Majesty. My words have gone too far.”
Sera curtsied deeply without ever raising her head.
As she was leaving, Helios’s shoes soon entered her vision. He was standing right in front of her.
“I have feelings for you, Miss Popo.”
After Helios had leaned down and whispered these words into her ear, Sera looked up, shocked.
She must have misheard.
He couldn’t have changed his mind in that short time.
Then, noticing the confusion in her eyes, Helios repeated what he had said.
“I have feelings for you, Miss Popo. I’ve fallen madly in love with you.”
He said this as though he was determined to instill the fact that, no, she had not misheard.
Heat soon surged within Sera, so hot that she completely forgot the cool, autumn breeze this evening.
It was as if time had stopped.
The only sound that could be heard now was the gentle breeze passing by them, rustling through the red maple leaves.
“But… Back then…”
After a long time, Sera opened her lips to speak, but then trailed off.
Sera’s pupils were quivering.
“Like a fool, it took me a long time to realize my own feelings.”
Just how much time had she spent all alone, soothing her anxiety.
“The Imperial Palace is a dangerous place, and being next to me might be the most dangerous of all. I was a coward. All along, I’ve been pretending not to know because I didn’t have the courage.”
Though he knew that he couldn’t do this, he must have plucked the courage to be with her at the beach that day.
“Those reasons to misunderstand… I’m so sorry that I realized it so late. You weren’t wrong to feel that way because of my actions. There was nothing to misunderstand.”
Sera felt as if even the slightest touch would make her burst. She couldn’t even breathe freely.
Was it because of the tremor she could hear from Helios’s voice each time he added more words?
Helios’s nervousness could be felt palpably through the arduously strewn sentences, woven one by one.
“Sera.”
Helios then called her name in a low voice, like the darkness that had fallen deeply on this very evening.
Instead of ‘Miss Popo’, it was the first time he ever called her name like this.
With goosebumps on her arms from the cold wind, Sera shuddered.
Her heart was beating so loudly that she wouldn’t be surprised if Helios could hear it.
Unable to breathe as though something was blocking her throat, what served to render her breathless was the thrill Helios’s words had sent through her, electrifying her.
As Helios’s voice trembled, his gaze dropped to the ground, carrying complex emotions that contained remorse amongst them as well.
“Your Majesty…”
With her heart beating heavily in its cage, Sera called out to him. And, she herself was surprised by the title that left through her lips.
‘Your Majesty.’ Just as she had called him, Helios was the emperor of this land.
Those were just two words, but they were enough to cool down her heart despite pounding excitedly just moments ago.
She had been waiting and dreaming of this moment for so long, but after uttering just those two words, all her overwhelming feelings were soon dampened.
“Ah…”
Sera could not say anything. All she could do was look down.
I shouldn’t accept his feelings.
Such realistic thoughts slowly encroached her mind.
She had tried to convey her own feelings to him several times before, but that was all.
She just wanted to confess.
She was well aware of her place. She could not dare covet the place next to him.
