But if Helios has reciprocated her feelings, then that was a different matter.
Even so, Sera could easily imagine what would ensue if she’d ever accept his feelings.
She’d be thrown into the flames, vulnerable to countless attacks, a barrage of aristocrats pointing their fingers at her.
Sera slowly raised her head, looking at him with a conflicted gaze.
As they faced each other amidst the night as the backdrop, the silence stretched between them.
“By any chance…”
Helios laughed quietly, helplessly to himself. As he trailed off, he could not bring himself to continue the thought for a moment.
Evidently enough, his laughter was not laced with a lighthearted mood.
It was the same helpless laughter she had made when they were at the imperial villa, trying to brush off her failed confession.
Still smiling, Helios spoke again.
“Is my answer too late…? Have your feelings changed in the meantime? Please be honest, it’s alright. Because I understand.”
He took a step back, saying that any answer would be fine.
Even if the answer would lead to rejection, he would not coerce her otherwise, nor would he resent her.
Conflicted between speaking honestly or speaking with reason, Sera opened her lips with great difficulty.
“I… I…”
But unlike her intentions, her voice would not come out properly. Sera could barely utter the next few words after several deep breaths.
“Your Majesty… What kind of relationship do you want with me…? Casually dating is inconsequential, but by any chance, if that’s not the case…”
Pressing down on the urge to utter the words that she did not want to admit, Sera turned away from Helios.
Noticing the strife within her, Helios reached out gently and narrowed the distance between them even more.
And, as only a hand’s span was left between them, he whispered quietly.
“Miss Popo, do you think that I would want only something casual with you?”
“No… Not at all.”
Sera spoke honestly. He was not the kind of man who’d do something like that.
“Then, are you afraid?”
This time, Sera nodded slowly.
“Yes… I want to say that I’m not, but Your Majesty, I’m certain that I’ll only pull you down. I’ve never had any complaints about my current standing. Peerage was never important to me, and I’ve been living well even though I can’t use magic. Everything’s fine for me. But with Your Majesty… I am not enough to be by your side.”
“Miss Popo.”
Helios called her in a hushed voice.
When Sera wouldn’t look at him, he carefully tilted her face up and rested his hand upon her cheek.
Clear blue eyes, welling up with tears, looked up at Helios.
“I can’t say… that it won’t be difficult. There will certainly be people who would protest against your social standing, and many dangers might lurk around, waiting to harm you. I cannot guarantee that no one would attack you, just like what happened at the villa. However…”
Helios faced Sera with a determined look.
After gulping dryly, he continued.
“I will give my all for the sake of protecting you. No matter what happens, I won’t give up. We haven’t even tried yet. We can’t give up without trying.”
“Try…”
Hearing such familiar words, Sera soon saw Rosé and Ferre’s faces in her mind.
It’s not as if they said those words while predicting this moment, but the two of them raised their pinky fingers and urged Sera to make a promise.
Don’t give up. Try harder, Sera.
As she heard Rosé’s voice ringing in her ears, Sera gripped the hem of her dress.
“If you allow me, Miss Popo… Please give me the right to stand by your side. Even if there are many hardships to come, I will try my very best.”
Each word bore the mark of long, thorough consideration.
There’s no way for Sera to misunderstand the meaning and determination that Helios was displaying.
He looked at her with such boundless determination.
“So, Miss Popo… Please answer me.”
Sounding as though it was coming from far away, Helios’s voice echoed and stifled her breath.
Will I be able to do well? Will it be alright to stand next to him?
All kinds of questions popped up in her head.
And, she knew that she needed to make up her mind at this very moment.
Voice trembling more than ever, Sera started to answer.
“I…”
Sera let go of her grip on her dress’s fabric.
Then, she reached up and held Helios’s hand, the one that wasn’t on her cheek.
Helios’s eyes grew wide as she intertwined her fingers with his.
Still, he smiled, perhaps already expecting what the answer would be.
“Once you give me your answer, Miss Popo, I won’t ever let you go.”
Just as he said those last words, Helios squeezed her hand tighter, making them more intertwined with his.
Finally, Sera confessed.
“My feelings haven’t changed, Your Majesty.”
The very moment he heard Sera’s answer, Helios’s face brightened up with the most dazzling smile, the corners of his eyes curved delicately.
In those purple eyes, what’s reflected was only her.
Thinking that this was a dream—an endlessly sweet dream that she did not want to wake up from—Sera gently opened her lips once more.
And she once again voiced confession into the cold night air, the very confession that she never thought that she’d ever utter again, no matter how courageous she could be.
“I like you too, Your Majesty… I like you so very much!”
Genuine happiness bloomed within Helios’s gaze, one that could not be hidden.
Then, Helios came so close that their breaths now mingled.
