The Reason Why She Can’t Get Married - Chapter 69
Chapter 69
Lyla concluded her request, satisfied with her confession.
“I knew this would happen anyway. Thank you for giving me courage and creating the opportunity.”
Selena felt relieved watching Lyla’s carefree smile. Of course, Lyla must have been hurt, but it didn’t seem like it would leave a lasting scar.
For a while after that, only ordinary clients visited Serenade. Today’s client was the young lord of the Madison Viscounty, who had requested a premium love letter writing course. He was known in social circles for being incredibly frivolous, and this was Selena’s first time meeting him. Since the request form itself was utterly ordinary and contained nothing strange, Selena decided not to prejudge based solely on rumors. As Madison arrived at Serenade at the appointed time, Selena greeted him with a bright smile. “Welcome, Lord Madison.”
“Oh, the flower deer of the Irving Marquisate, Lady Selena Irving. It’s a pleasure to meet you.” Madison knelt on one knee, offering a single rose tucked into his breast pocket, and winked theatrically.
‘Flower deer… flower…’ Selena amended her earlier thought, deciding that perhaps prejudging based on rumors was acceptable after all.
“Please, have a seat.”
“Thank you, my lady.” Madison winked again. ‘Doesn’t his eye twitch doing that? I hope it does,’ Selena thought, getting straight to the point. “You said you wanted to learn how to write love letters?”
“Yes, that’s right. Learning from such a beautiful lady, I imagine my letters will be filled with the scent of flowers from now on.”
“….”
Selena took a breath, clenching her jaw to keep down her lunch. She strongly considered canceling the request but held back. “Lord Madison, for the sake of our session, I’ll be blunt.”
“Yes, please do.”
“Stop with the cheesy lines. If you do that one more time, you’ll be immediately ejected and permanently banned from Serenade.” Though her lips curved into a gentle smile, a menacing aura emanated from Selena. Intimidated by her presence, Madison hiccuped and nodded. Selena, her usual composure restored, took a sip of tea.
“Now then, let’s try again. Why do you want to learn how to write love letters?”
“Well… there’s this lady I’ve been writing to, but I must not be very good at it because she keeps rejecting me.” Madison’s face fell. Finally receiving a normal answer, Selena’s expression turned intrigued. ‘I think I already know why she’s rejecting you even before hearing the details.’
“Who is she?”
“The third daughter of the Hugo Barony, Lady Thalia Hugo.”
“Have you ever spoken to her?”
“Yes, a few times… but strangely, whenever I try to talk to her, she avoids me with a look of disgust.” Madison sighed heavily and continued. “I can accept that my writing isn’t great, but I’m confident in my conversational skills. I don’t understand why she reacts that way.” Selena silently nodded, observing Madison, who seemed oblivious to the reason.
‘It’s no wonder Lady Hugo is disgusted. If he weren’t a client, I wouldn’t even give him the time of day.’
“Did you bring the letters you sent her?” Selena had asked him to bring all his love letters when they scheduled the appointment. At Madison’s gesture, his attendant placed a thick stack of letters on the table.
“Are these all the letters you sent to Lady Hugo?”
“Yes. I couldn’t contain my feelings and wrote three letters a day, which is how it became this many.” Madison looked embarrassed. Selena, aghast, quickly scanned the pile.
‘Wow, over fifty letters… to Lady Hugo…’
If this was the number returned after rejection, she couldn’t imagine how many he had sent in total.
‘This is excessive, beyond excessive.’
Just like their initial greeting, Madison was the epitome of “too much is as bad as too little.”
She could only imagine how excessively he had written those letters.
“May I read them?”
“Yes, please do.”
Selena picked up the topmost letter and unfolded it.
[My little princess, Lady Hugo. Hello, my little princess. (※ This means you are a cute princess, small and dainty like a pinky finger.) May Prince Thumb court you? (※ Conversely, this means I am a big and handsome prince, like a thumb.)]
‘Oh, dear.’
Crumple. Selena closed her eyes, inadvertently crushing Madison’s letter before she had even finished reading a few lines. Taking a deep breath to regain her composure, she asked, “Why… what on earth possessed you to call her ‘little princess’ and yourself ‘Prince Thumb’?”
“Oh, that? A friend recommended using endearing nicknames to foster intimacy—”
“Stop meeting that friend.” Selena stated firmly. He was a terrible friend, more like an enemy. Silencing Madison with a look before he could protest, she picked up the next letter.
[To Lady Thalia Hugo. It’s terribly disappointing that you’ve been busy for weeks. You’re not avoiding me on purpose, are you? If you are, I’ll tell my mother~!]
