Chapter 87.1

“Be careful!”

Carinne quickly stepped forward and raised her shield.

A translucent barrier instantly appeared, blocking the path of the monster. The monster snarled ferociously, its claws raking against the barrier. Even though she felt her feet slide backward, she held her ground.

One, two, three…

By the time she counted to five, she could feel the barrier gradually fading. Just as the monster’s claws were about to tear through the shield, the Duke, who had repositioned his sword, sliced off the monster’s head.

The monster’s head rolled across the floor.

Carinne pinned the severed head with her foot and plunged her kitchen knife into the nape of its neck. With a cracking sound, the core shattered, and the monster vanished into smoke. How did she know the broken object was the monster’s core?

Because she had overheard Marta while receiving the shield, she had said that the monster’s core was located in its nape and that the monster could only be completely eliminated by crushing the core.

“So, what do you think? Am I more useful than you expected?”

Duke Lucas did not answer. He merely pursed his lips, his face pale.

Carinne held up the shield and flashed a confident smile at Lucas. Then, her eyes met Archen’s, who was intently watching her. He immediately turned his head away as soon as he saw her.

It was clear he was deeply offended.

“Fine, ignore me then. Let’s see how long you can keep it up.”

She muttered under her breath, readjusting her grip on the shield. Her hands were slick with sweat from holding it so tightly.

“This is where it starts.”

The Duke said as they reached the edge of the central square. From here on, they were entering the heart of the city.

Up until now, they had been able to blend in somewhat with the other soldiers fighting alongside them, but the city center was different. The soldiers had withdrawn from the city center, judging that they had rescued as many civilians as possible.

Therefore, from now on, they would not only be without the help of soldiers but would also be fortunate if they didn’t encounter a swarm of monsters.

“I’ll take the lead.”

The Duke opened his mouth, stepping forward.

Carinne followed him, and Archen stayed behind, keeping watch behind them.

The city center appeared deserted on the surface. However, it was only deserted on the surface. Every alleyway would be teeming with monsters, lurking in the shadows, waiting for someone to appear. The thought of not knowing where a monster might spring from made it feel like they were walking through a giant minefield.

Amidst the suffocating tension, the group continued to move forward. Even before any monsters appeared, the light emanating from Archen’s hand refused to fade.

Carinne felt a pang of worry.

Had he taken his medicine? Was he pushing himself too hard and about to collapse again? Still, he had said he would take care of it. People have pride.

Torn between pride and concern, she eventually succumbed to the latter.

“Don’t use your magic.”

“….”

“There’s no need to waste your energy unnecessarily. You can use your magic when the monsters appear.”

She couldn’t bring herself to say she was worried, so she phrased it as saving his strength. Archen’s expression betrayed surprise, though it was only for a fleeting moment. He returned to his usual emotionless state, as if he were afraid of showing it, and said coldly.

“Then why are you, Princess, here?”

What had he been listening to all this time? Of course, she had followed them because she was worried about Archen and Iris! Her mood plummeted.

“You don’t know?”

“Alright, it was my mistake to ask.”

“Fine, whatever.”

‘Let’s just stop talking…’

She held back her words, fearing that further conversation would only lead to an argument. Just as she thought the conversation was over, the Duke intervened.

“Can you two just make up already?”

‘He’s so tactless.’

Couldn’t he just pretend not to notice?

Carinne snapped.

“Just watch where you’re going!”

Suddenly, a hand shot out from behind and covered her mouth. The smell of leather filled her nostrils. She was startled and pulled the hand away from her mouth.

“What are you doing?”

“Be quiet.”

Archen whispered, making a shushing sound.

The Duke lowered his stance and raised his sword. Both of their gazes were fixed on the alleyway beside them. The interior of the alleyway, where planks were haphazardly stacked, was pitch dark.

The memory of finding Archen collapsed in a similar alleyway flashed through her mind. As then, an ominous feeling crept up her legs, a gut feeling that something was inside, and a gut feeling that whatever it was, it would not be friendly to them.

In that instant, multiple red lights appeared simultaneously, as if the lights had been turned on.

At a glance, the number of lights easily exceeded several dozen. The lights flickered like old streetlights, and with each flicker, the number of lights increased, and they drew closer.

The three of them stood frozen in front of the alley, watching the lights grow larger and larger. Finally, when they were revealed under the light, Carinne felt an overwhelming sense of power disparity. Their size was different from any monster they had encountered before.

There were literally dozens of monsters, each the size of a house. It was not a number they could handle.
