The Male Lead’s Sickly Aide is My Type - Chapter 86.2
Chapter 86.2
“It’s his words that you should pretend you didn’t hear.”
Carinne spoke as she looked around the tent slowly.
“It’s no use trying to stop me. I’ve already made up my mind. I heard that my friend is out there. I have to go out there to find her.”
The rift in the other world, judging by the position of the clouds, was in the city center, far from the central square. To get there, they would have to cross the city, so why not kill two birds with one stone by closing the rift and finding Iris?
Marta didn’t object. She didn’t try to stop Carinne by saying it was dangerous but simply asked.
“Your Highness, do you know how to handle a sword?”
“No.”
“Do you know how to use magic?”
“No.”
“Then do you know how to use a weapon like a bow or dagger?”
“No.”
After finishing the third answer, she felt a slight sense of doubt. She felt like a frustrating character that often appears in novels. A nuisance character who doesn’t know how to do anything and just wanders around, putting other people in danger.
Maybe she shouldn’t have said anything, but she had to find Iris, she thought, her head becoming complicated.
At that moment, Marta gestured towards the back of the tent and said to Carinne.
“Come here for a moment.”
* * *
The space inside the tent was larger than she expected. It seemed like another tent had been added behind the first one. In the empty space, there was a table, and on it was an unidentified object wrapped in cloth.
Before Carinne could ask what it was, Marta pulled the cloth off the object.
The object was none other than a shield. A shield with a large cross drawn on the front shaped like an inverted triangle.
At first glance, it looked like something a knight would carry on the battlefield, but on the other hand, it also looked like a child’s toy. It was incredibly thin. When she picked it up, it was incredibly light. If she went out beyond the barricade with this shield, she wouldn’t last five minutes. It would be torn to shreds by the claws of the demons.
Marta seemed to sense what Carinne was thinking.
“It’s a shield that the priests have infused with divine power. It may look like an ordinary shield, but it has the power to activate a protective barrier in times of crisis.”
“A protective barrier?”
So that’s why it was so thin and light. It was a shield that generated a protective barrier, so it didn’t need to be able to withstand physical impact.
“That’s right. Divine power has the property of countering evil forces, so if you bring it in front of a demon, it will automatically activate the protective barrier. However, the barrier that is activated at that time will only last for a very short time. If you want the barrier to last longer, you have to say the activation word.”
“Activation word…”
It was at this moment that she realized she was in a ‘fantasy’ world of romance.
Carinne smiled wryly and placed her hand on the shield. She could feel the shield vibrate at her fingertips.
“Protective barrier, appear! Poof! What is this?”
So what was the real activation word? She looked at Marta, thinking she would ask, but for some reason, Marta was looking at her with a look of pity.
“It’s been decided.”
“What?”
“The activation word is determined by the person using the shield.”
She argued that there was no such thing, but the situation was already over. Apparently, when she put her hand on the shield and spoke as it vibrated, it became the activation word for the shield.
“That’s ridiculous. Can’t I change it? I want to set it again.”
Marta’s answer was ‘No’.
After several more rounds of wrangling, Carinne came to the conclusion that there was no other way.
The activation phrase for the shield became ‘Protective barrier, appear, poof!’ Thankfully, since she had taken her hands off the shield while speaking, the phrase ‘What is this?’ was not included in the activation phrase.
Marta offered to lend her the shield for a day. Carinne accepted the offer.
When she came out of the tent with the shield, the court mages were nowhere to be seen. Instead, Duke Lucas and Archen, whose face was colder than ice, were waiting for her.
‘He’s really angry.’
They had fought just because she had said she would go outside, so what would happen when she said she was going to follow them to close the gap?
Archen turned his body away without even looking at Carinne.
“Duke Lucas, let’s go.”
He must have said that on purpose. It was also very sarcastic.
Carinne clicked her tongue and followed Duke Lucas. Archen didn’t pay any attention to Carinne, but Duke Lucas was curious about what Carinne was holding.
“What’s that?”
“It’s a shield that activates a protective barrier. If you need help, just tell me. I’ll put up a barrier for you.”
Duke Lucas scoffed. It was as if he was saying that she should worry about herself, whether he needed help or not.
Carinne stepped back, feeling offended. Just wait. You’ll see if you need the shield or not.
The soldier guarding the barricade gate opened the gate for them. Carinne raised her shield, and Duke Lucas drew his sword from its scabbard. Archen raised a sphere of light in his hand.
It was the beginning of a full-fledged battle.
