The Male Lead’s Sickly Aide is My Type - Chapter 87.2
Chapter 87.2
A few seconds passed, and then someone shouted to run. Carinne turned around and ran with all her might. Duke Lucas and Archen were with her.
As they ran, the Duke swung his sword, trying to reduce the number of monsters pursuing them. However, they couldn’t afford to stop for long, as they risked being surrounded by monsters and meeting their end. He eventually gave up trying to reduce the number of monsters and started running.
Archen did the same.
He shot beams of light, knocking down a few monsters, but he didn’t have the time to get close enough to the monsters to crush their cores. Knocking down monsters without crushing their cores would only anger them.
Indeed, several of the monsters that had been set ablaze were excitedly chasing after the group at an even faster pace.
“What do we do now?”
Carinne asked, panting.
“We can’t go back to the central square. If we take this many with us, the barricade will be breached.”
In the same way, the Duke replied, panting heavily.
To be sure, the barricade of discarded furniture and logs seemed inadequate to stop a house-sized monster. Even for the sake of the wounded and refugees, it was impossible to drive the horde of monsters to the central square.
Then, should they continue to run? However, Carinne was not a track athlete, nor had she ever practiced running, so there was a limit to how far she could run away. At this rate, she would be caught by the monsters. And she would fight fiercely and meet a glorious end.
But even if the sky fell, there was a way to survive. Archen, who had been listening to their conversation, shouted, “I can wipe them out with a single lightning spell. However, it will take time to recite the incantation.”
“How long will it take?”
“Five minutes will be enough.”
“That’s fine! I’ll cast a protective barrier!”
Although it was a bit of a gamble, there was no other way but to recite the incantation. Marta had said that the barrier would last about ten minutes.
So, five minutes should be fine.
Carinne took advantage of the gap where the distance between her and the monsters had widened and slammed the end of her shield on the ground.
“Protective barrier…!”
She felt a buzzing vibration from the shield. Closing her eyes tightly, she was about to chant the next part of the incantation… The sky darkened, and a shadow fell over her head. It was as if a blackout curtain had been drawn over the city.
At that moment, a flapping sound echoed from afar.
She thought she had heard wrong, but judging from the fact that the sound was getting louder, she had not heard wrong. Within a few seconds, the flapping sound filled her ears. It was so loud that she thought she would go deaf.
Forgetting that the monsters were chasing her, she looked up at the sky. Hundreds of flocks of birds were darkening the sky. She had never seen such a sight, not even in movies. If there were locust swarms in the Bible, they would look like this.
It was not only Carinne who was surprised to see the flocks of birds. The monsters that were running towards them suddenly looked up at the sky, bewildered by the sudden darkness.
That was the last sight she saw of the monsters.
The flapping sound grew louder, and the flocks of birds descended as they were. The birds surrounded the monsters and cawed noisily. Dozens of birds clung to each monster, blocking their vision with their wings and pecking at their heads with their sharp beaks.
The monsters, who were suddenly attacked by the flocks of birds, were startled and ran around in confusion. In the end, the monsters, unable to withstand the attack, began to run away one by one. The birds persistently chased after the fleeing monsters.
Carinne and her party watched the fleeing monsters with blank eyes. What in the world was going on? Not only was it strange that so many birds had suddenly appeared, but the timing of the appearance of the flocks of birds was amazingly exquisite.
As she followed the flocks of birds with her eyes, one monster rushed towards her. It was one that had been hiding in an alley and had not been seen by the birds.
She hurriedly held her shield forward.
Before five seconds had passed, a white beam of light hit the monster, and the blade of the sword grazed the monster’s eye, leaving a long scar. The monster cried out sadly and fell to its knees. A stream of blood flowed from its eye where its front paw had touched. It seemed that it could not see because of the injury to its eye.
Now was the chance to break the monster’s core.
Carinne reached for her kitchen knife, but she stopped in her tracks, her face bewildered as she felt something soft and warm on her ankles. It felt as if her ankles were wrapped in a fluffy rug. Several cats were meowing around her feet, and a couple of dogs were with them.
Birds earlier, and now dogs and cats?
While she was dumbfounded, someone jumped out from the side of the road and stabbed something sharp into the monster’s head. Carinne was startled and stepped back. Her black hair flew in the air, and the hem of her pink one-piece dress fluttered like waves in the wind.
“Carinne, you’re safe!”
Iris, who had drawn her dagger, smiled brightly at her.
