Chapter 19.2
Sophia remained silent for a moment. She sniffled once and then, with deft fingers, pulled a dessert plate from the cupboard. She cut out the crumpled and roughly eaten parts and presented the untouched middle part. Although it wasn’t a large portion, it was enough to savor the taste.
She shyly handed the plate to April, her cheeks blushing.
“It’s embarrassing, but I hope Miss April will eat it.”
“Wait just a moment.”
April brought the remaining whipped cream.
‘Certainly, Sacher-Torte is served with whipped cream.’
She had tasted it in mainland Austria. The combination of slightly dense cake and smooth whipped cream was fantastic. Nonetheless, the whipped cream served with the cake had to be firm.
When she attempted to grab the whisk made of wood again, Sophia quickly took hold of it.
“Do you want a slightly firmer whipped cream this time?”
“Yes, I’m going to have it with the cake.”
In no time, Sophia quickly prepared a firmer whipped cream. Then, April placed some whipped cream next to the cake. Since she didn’t have a piping bag, she used a spoon, which made it look less appealing, though it would still taste good.
“This is…?”
“I thought it would be nice to have it with the cream. Sophia, you should try coffee with cream together.”
When she placed the Einspänner in front of Sophia, April hurriedly stopped her from picking up the spoon.
“Oh, just try it as it is without stirring.”
“Just like that? But there’s whipped cream on top?”
“Yes, don’t mix it. Enjoy the whipped cream and coffee together.”
Sophia reluctantly complied, showing some reluctance, but she obediently followed her words. She took a sip of the Einspänner.
She nervously watched, hoping her heart would resonate with the woman in front of her as she held her breath and observed Sophia’s expression intently. Soon, a single teardrop trickled down from Sophia’s left eye, but she didn’t look sad.
As she continued to drink the coffee with a faint smile, April had an instinctual feeling.
‘It looks like my magic worked.’
After setting down their empty coffee cups, Sophia picked up a fork and started eating the cake this time.
April followed suit and tasted the cake.
It was initially enveloped in the rich, slightly bitter taste of chocolate rather than sweetness. Then, a delightful blend of tangy yet sweet apricot jam spread across the palate. The harmonious contrast between these two flavors was truly fantastic.
This time, they tried it with whipped cream on top. The slightly firm texture of the cake was complemented by the whipped cream.
‘It tastes just like what I had in Vienna.’
Eating this made her even more eager.
‘I really want to hire Sophia!’
However, she couldn’t recruit her without permission.
‘…What should I do?’
As she was contemplating this, Sophia, who had been silently observing April as if observing her reactions, smiled with her eyes curved.
“Is everything okay?”
“It’s delicious.”
“What a relief.”
At those words, she covered her face with her hands this time and started sobbing.
April silently waited for her.
Sometimes, silence could be more comforting than a hundred words.
After a while, it seemed like Sophia had composed herself, and she began to tell her story.
“I’ve wanted to make desserts since I was young. I wanted to see people enjoy my desserts.”
She came to the palace with the thought that she could showcase her desserts to a wider audience in the imperial kitchen. That was where the problem began. She faced discrimination solely because she was a woman, and her desserts were discarded without a chance.
“Still, I was told that if I create a new dessert, it would be presented to the Emperor, but today, once again…”
April tightly held Sophia’s hand as she bowed her head. After hearing her story, there seemed to be no more need for hesitation.
“How about joining me?”
“Yes?”
“I’m planning to open a cafe in the capital with the investment from the Duke of Winterville. I needed a baker to run the cafe with me.”
“Ye, yes?”
Sophia was caught off guard by the sudden proposal.
“Baker? Me?”
“Yes. My goal is to introduce coffee and desserts to a wider audience. If your goal is to be the imperial chef for the imperial family, I wouldn’t make such a proposal.”
April took a deep breath before speaking as if delivering a speech.
“But if Sophia’s goal is to present delicious desserts to many people, how about joining me?”
