Chapter 222

Sera gauged Helios’s reaction.
Fortunately, Helios didn’t take offense to what she said. And again, this time, he admitted his faults and apologized.
“…I’m sorry, Miss Popo. It’s as you say. From now on, I won’t do something like this ever again.”
“…Yes, Your Majesty. And…”
“Go ahead and speak freely, Miss Popo. It’s alright.”
‘Your actions today can cause misunderstandings.’
The words were right on the tip of Sera’s tongue.
Of course, something like that wouldn’t be his fault, and if she were to keep receiving apologies from the nation’s emperor, it would be a burden.
Sera pressed down on her heavy feelings and decided to just endure it.
Maybe he’s just doing this because he’s looking out for one of his subjects.
“By the way, what a coincidence this is, Your Majesty. I didn’t know that you’ll be here to watch the opera with Their Highnesses.”
Instead, Sera tried to alleviate the awkwardness by bringing up a mundane topic.
Helios’s eyes curved beautifully.
“Rosé and Ferre said they wanted to see it, and I agreed to take them here. I thought it might be good for them in terms of education.”
“Their Highnesses?”
Sera’s eyes grew round with curiosity.
“Yes, Rosé and Ferre.”
“That’s quite unexpected. I was sure that Their Highnesses would be too afraid to watch the opera. When I told them about it in class before, they also said that it’s too difficult to understand.”
“…I see. It’s the first time I’m hearing about that.”
Helios’s answer came a beat late.
Ding— Ding— Ding—
It seemed like a lot of time had already passed. The second act was about to start.
Yet Helios remained here despite that.
“You should go now, Your Majesty.”
“Go? Where?”
“To Their Highnesses, of course. They’re surely waiting for you. The second act is beginning.”
“They’ll be alright without me.”
Helios just said this as he looked at the other side’s balcony, where his original seat was.
Perhaps thinking fondly of his younger siblings, a faint smile hung on the corners of his lips.
“They’re with Jean. I don’t have to go back right now.”
What do you mean you don’t?
Right after he said that, the lights of the splendid theater were turned off, and the sound of violins announced the start of the second act.
As the bright spotlights headed center stage, the actors’ singing voices were soon heard.
“You must go immediately, Your Majesty. It just started, so if you go now, you’ll be able to enjoy the rest of the show with Their Highnesses.”
Lowering her voice, Sera hastily urged Helios.
“I can’t. The performance has already begun, so it’s too late to leave.”
Helios strode forward and sat down where Richard was seated just a while ago, as if it was where he was supposed to be from the very beginning.
He pushed away the large bouquet on the chair and chucked it to a far corner of the balcony. Then, he patted the seat next to him, where Sera would sit.
“Come and sit here.”
“But isn’t Your Majesty’s seat on the other side? You’re not going back?”
“If someone from the audience leaves their seat after the performers have already begun singing, it means they’re dissatisfied. I can’t do that. As far as I know, people have started talking about how I’ll be watching this performance. There would surely be an article about it if I leave midway.”
“That’s true, but…”
“So, come and sit.”
Though suspicious, what he said was strangely convincing.
If someone were to leave while the actors were in the middle of performing, it would certainly be interpreted as booing. But… him sitting at a different seat would be even more noticeable.
No, rather, the papers would have even more of a field day once they find out that he had watched an opera show without someone other than his younger siblings.
“Miss Popo, just think that the only people in this opera house are the actors and you.”
Without any further contemplation, Helios just motioned for her to come and sit beside him.
As Sera was compelled to sit next to him, she couldn’t shake off the strange feeling that she’d just been hoodwinked.
The spotlight from the stage glowed faintly towards this way, shining on his face.
Watching the second act in silence, Sera felt that she was much less focused compared to when Helios was seated on the other side of the room.
* * *
“Did you like the show?”
As the performance had ended, Rosé and Ferre came back and rushed straight towards Sera.
She glanced towards Helios once, then crouched down so she could be on eye level with the twins.
“Yes, I did.”
Actually, she couldn’t even watch it properly in the first place. She couldn’t concentrate because of how awkward she felt sitting next to Helios.
“Did Your Highnesses like it? Wasn’t it scary for you?”
“It’s okay. When the queen wearing all black clothes came out, I closed my eyes juuust a little bit. Ferre was more scared than me.”
“I was scared kinda a little, but kinda a lot. The song was scary. If Hyung was there, I wanted to tell him to cover my eyes, but he didn’t even come back, so Rosé covered my eyes instead.”
Ferre hugged himself and shuddered. He was still thinking of how scary that scene was.
Indeed, Ferre was much more of a scaredy cat compared to Rosé, so even the tamest of dark scenes were already frightening to him.
Perhaps upset with Helios, Ferre pouted his lips and went, ‘phooey’.
Looking at his younger brother with a relaxed gaze, Helios stroked Ferre’s head.
“I couldn’t go back because the performance had already started by then. Were you very scared?”
As a sign of apology, he took Ferre in his arms and carried the child. However, Ferre still gave Helios’s muscular arm a few hits as though he wasn’t satisfied.
“Heli Hyung, bad. You’re the one who asked us to come with you and watch the show. I was really scared. I only came here because Hyung said Sera’s gonna be here.”
“When did I ask you to come with me, Ferre?”
“You did. You asked me and Rosé to come watch the opera with you all of a sudden. But then you watched together with Sera. Unfair.”
“Ferre, I…”
His Majesty asked the twins first?
Sera looked at him pointedly. Though it’s definitely not anything important, that’s the exact opposite of what he said earlier.
Helios smiled awkwardly and was about to say something, but Rosé intervened.
“Never mind, it doesn’t matter. What matters is that Oppa and Sera met today.”
I wish we could spend more time with you though.
Unfortunately, the moment Rosé said this, Jean appeared—his eyes as refreshing as ever—and said that it’s time for them to go.
Sera went out with them to see them off.
As she watched the three people go into the carriage and leave, Sera was left with nothing but the feeling of sadness.
Jutting out of a window, Rosé and Ferre waved goodbye to her for a long time.
“Sera! Come visit the palace soon!”
“Me and Ferre are gonna send an invitation!”
But as she heard Rosé and Ferre shouting this from afar, Sera immediately felt lighter.
