He was repeatedly summoned under the pretext of solidifying his strength. At times, he had to go on extermination missions, and at other times, he was called to assist with her tasks.

“Get some training in. If you keep relying solely on your divine power, you’ll really end up dead.”

Kylian Cypnos was a chilling figure. When he went on an extermination mission, he acted like a battle-hungry spirit, focused solely on achieving success rather than caring for his comrades.

As Lewarren joined Kylian on another monster hunt, he once again thought of him as a cold-blooded person.

“Kylian, can you speak a little more nicely? Don’t you know that Lady Anais cares for High Priest Lewarren?”

Lewarren quickly became close to Lilith, who had a knack for getting along with anyone. She was witty yet kind, almost like the opposite of Anais Percival.

But sometimes, there was an oddly distant feeling. Lilith’s amiable demeanor felt like a mask, and yet, as they spent more time together, they couldn’t help but grow closer.

“Ha.”

Kylian Cypnos hated Lewarren even more because of his closeness to the Young Duke. At least, that’s how Lewarren felt. At the end of Kylian’s gaze was always Anais Percival, and at the end of Anais’s gaze was the turned head of Kylian Cypnos.

Lewarren truly didn’t want to be entangled in this nauseating and pathetic relationship.

Still, the extermination missions had to continue. They would persist at least once a month until the spawn of monsters near the capital was eradicated.

Young Duke Percival was so sincere about her monster hunts and the improvement of the capital that one might think she had an obsession with cleanliness. Thanks to her, the lives of the citizens living under the rotten flesh of the imperial family’s tyranny had surprisingly started to improve.

Yet, it was Anais who suffered repeatedly due to the mistakes of the royals that spread like a plague.

The coup that Duke Percival was secretly preparing was, in fact, a hope for both the citizens of the capital and the other nobles. It promised to uproot the corrupt imperial family and sow the seeds of a new future.

One day, shortly after Anais’s wedding, Lewarren headed towards the forest in the capital where she often went alone. He knew she would likely be there again.

“Drinking alone again, huh?”

Anais Percival had a habit of sneaking away to drink in this spot. The forest was located on a fairly steep hill, so at night, people rarely visited. Moreover, due to the possibility of monsters lurking about, only the strong would dare to come here.

“Lewarren, you’re back.”

“Yes. I figured you’d be sulking alone again.”

The reason Anais was sneaking drinks was obvious. Kylian Cypnos, the man who was now her husband.

“What’s the matter now?”

“Just… I’m starting to dislike myself.”

Lewarren looked at Anais with confusion. He had thought they would grow closer after the wedding, but it seemed like the foolish couple had somehow grown more distant.

“Why do you dislike yourself?”

“Because I want something that isn’t mine.”

“……”

“Is that selfish?”

At Anais’s statement, one of Lewarren’s eyebrows raised in confusion. He couldn’t quite grasp what she truly wanted. If she wanted something, it must be Kylian Cypnos, yet he was already hers.

“What is it that you want? If you really want it, I can get it for you.”

Lewarren had changed since getting to know her. The hope she had given him, along with the life of a content high priest, felt like he had finally found his place. Although the work was arduous, he was grateful to her.

What he had always wished for was to live a noble life. Even though Anais was right about that, he sometimes felt exhausted by life in the temple. Overall, he was happy.

With Anais Percival supporting him, and with Kylian and Lilith, who she had introduced, Lewarren found friends he had never had before. His once clumsy feelings for Anais no longer grew, as he felt a desire to repay her kindness.

“How could you possibly do that?”

“Have you forgotten I’m the best among thieves?”

“Puhaha.”

If it weren’t for her kindness, he would have been caught and killed by some noble hunting him down.

Whenever the light dimmed, she always provided him with new illumination. Like a plant growing toward the sunlight, he followed her like a sunflower.

Lewarren thought of himself as a priest. However, the God he served was not the Goddess Roseraine. He was devoted to the one who truly illuminated his life.

Someone who treated him with ease but genuinely cared for him, guiding him along the right path.

“If it’s something I can’t steal, then it doesn’t exist. Just say the word.”

He believed he could do anything if he could return the light she had given him.

* * *

Knock, knock.

“High Priest Raviel has been offered as a sacrifice. High Priest Mephist is looking for you.”

At those words, Lewarren picked up the still-unconscious Anais once more and got up.

After reaching the Emperor’s chamber, Lewarren saw Lilith lying unconscious. He set Anais down and approached Lilith.

“Why has she fainted again?”

“She’ll wake soon. She’ll absorb all the life energy within the palace.”

At the high priest’s words, Lewarren positioned the unconscious Anais in the center of the magic circle and headed to where he needed to be.
