“Can’t you just call me ‘my love’ as you did before?”
Now openly gaping, Reina’s mouth popped open on its own. She couldn’t believe her own ears.
“Um…”
She couldn’t even form a coherent response to that. All she could do was stare at the young man in front of her as he was looking back at her with such a sorrowful expression.
“……”
As if it wasn’t enough for his words, which kept coming in like rushing waves, to confuse her so terribly, his gorgeous face added more to this and was just making her vision spin even further.
‘Ethan, this punk, this jerk! You’re not supposed to be some kind of bouncy rubber ball, but why is your attitude so all over the place…’
Suppressing the very strong urge to sigh, Reina once again examined the melancholy face of this young man in front of her.
‘This is driving me nuts. What now? What’s making you feel so miserable, huh?’
Just what kind of a joke was this anyway.
‘You don’t even have a manic-depressive disorder or anything, so what the heck… How can you be worse than my grandmother with her dreadful mood swings from menopause?’
Over the course of a short period, she thought that they had gotten close enough because he started smiling and letting down his guard around her. Yet, he suddenly hit her on the back of the head with the line, ‘Be mindful of distinguishing between public and private affairs,’ so much so that it made her feel nervous and embarrassed.
But then, now? Like a bolt out of the blue, he apologized and was saying that he wanted her to call him ‘my love’ again?
‘No matter how much human life is said to be unpredictable… Isn’t this just too much?’
“Reina, that’s why, just like before… I think I’d like it more if you call me ‘my love’.”
“Haha… I-I guess…”
Not knowing which tune she’s supposed to be dancing to, Reina just looked away.
‘Haa… Life isn’t a walk in a park. It’s seriously not like that at all…’
* * *
Enjoying her first day off in the longest time, Reina hugged her pillow tighter.
“What’s the point of owning a diamond mine, huh.”
One wrong step she’d take in this life, she’d be saddled with her default engagement with Lehman, and she’d inevitably end up with the death flag. She tried to avoid it by going with the Ethan route, but he turned out to have some kind of split personality.
“Seriously, why me…”
Annoyed for no reason, Reina buried her face in her pillow and whined audibly.
Knock, knock.
“Milady, it’s Mary.”
“Uuugh… Come in.”
Entering the room with a tea tray in hand, Mary was surprised to see her lady having such messy hair.
“Oh my goodness! Milady! Lord Elijah is coming to visit today. How can you stay like this?”
“It’s fine… He’s a kid who’ll like me even if I pick my nose in front of him…”
“Pick your nose?!”
Bewildered, Mary set down the tray in a hurry.
Then, she quickly pulled Reina’s arm tightly, dragging the household’s youngest child towards a nearby vanity table. Reina’s shoulders were drooping as she sat in the chair.
“Please don’t act the same way you do inside the Chantra manor while you’re outside, Milady.”
What did she even usually do inside the Chantra manor anyway? What kind of actions?
“You’re going to get engaged soon, aren’t you?”
Reina’s hair would get messy again later anyway, but Mary endeavored to keep it neat and presentable. While fixing up Reina’s hair, Mary chattered on about ‘refinement’ on the premise of ‘engagement’.
Unfortunately for her though, Reina wasn’t feeling all that enthusiastic about this peptalk. It’s as if she had become an elementary student who’s been chucked into a calculus class.
“Uuugh… Fine, fine… I won’t pick my nose.”
She never actually did pick her nose in front of him, but if she’d get the urge…
“Please don’t pick your ears either!”
“Yeah, yeah… Fine, okay I won’t.”
“You can’t brag about how big your eye boogers are!”
“They’re actually amaz… Haa, never mind. I got it, I won’t do that either.”
More insincere promises followed Mary’s admonitions. And by the time there was nothing more to nag about, an attendant was heard knocking on her bedroom door.
“Milady, the Young Master of House Jehardt has arrived.”
“Okay… I’ll be out in a sec…”
Today was the day that Eli was coming for a visit. Reina hadn’t been attending her academy classes regularly ever since she started doing her internship, so it had been more or less two months since they last saw each other.
After Mary painted Reina’s lips with a gorgeous tint, she held the young lady’s hand tightly.
“Milady. Lord Elijah doesn’t have a betrothed either. So please make sure to keep everything I said in mind.”
What’s Mary talking about now? How could the topic of engagement or marriage be brought up with someone Reina considered her little brother?
“It’s not like that between me and Eli though.”
Patting the maid’s hands, Reina let out a lifeless chuckle and stood up from her seat.
* * *
Perhaps due to the anxious thoughts plaguing her mind, Reina’s steps as she went to the garden full of purple flowers were powerless.
Gloomily trudging through the colonnade of vines, she caught the scent of a strong lavender fragrance as she heard a familiar call from an unfamiliar voice.
“Noona!”
“……?”
Eli was the one and only person who called her ‘Noona’, but Reina couldn’t help but look up in surprise.
“I missed you, Noona.”
“Uh… Eli?”
When Reina opened and closed her mouth then said his name like a fool, Eli glanced down at Reina with a bright grin.
Right, he literally ‘glanced down’ at Reina.
“You’re Eli… right?”
“Yes I am.”
“You… grew so much taller?”
In fact, it wasn’t just his height that changed. Even his voice had dropped to a low register.
It’s not the same beautiful, ringing voice that reminded her of an elf… But now a smooth voice that was reminiscent of morning dew at daybreak.
“We haven’t seen each other for two months after all.”
‘How could someone grow this tall after just two months though…’
Which country had that kind of custom? Maybe Noah should be shipped off to that place.
“Umm…”
He grew at least ten to fifteen centimeters taller. And it seemed like his general frame had also grown wider.
“My rice cake disappeared…”
Reina murmured it under his breath unknowingly, but Eli just responded with a chuckle.
“Disappeared? But I’m right here, Noona.”
Ever so naturally, Eli took Reina’s hand and brought it to his cheek and nuzzled it.
‘N-No, wait a darn minute. This is gonna look so weird.’
When Eli was about the same height as Reina, he had more of a ‘little brother’ vibe to him. They were like a nice, picturesque pair of a little brother and big sister.
But now…
Didn’t they kind of look like the male lead and the female lead of some bloody angst novel?
“Hahaha… Gotcha. Okay, let go now…”
As Reina tried to wiggle out her hand from his hold, Eli grabbed it even tighter.
His large hands, which somehow looked like they had doubled in size before she knew it, covered Reina’s hand as if they had devoured it.
“Do you hate holding my hand?”
As his voice sank like the night air and as his firm gaze met her trembling eyes, somehow or another, a strange atmosphere ensued.
“……”
She’s already going crazy enough because of Ethan, who changed so suddenly, but what’s up with Eli now?
It felt as if the world as she knew it had completely disappeared.
