It was at the moment that the heads of the village were holding a meeting at the town hall—
“Saintess, we received a communication request from House Stymist.”
It seemed to be a call related to the medical tool production order that had been made before.
Pausing the meeting for a moment, Reina stood up from her seat and approached the person who had come to tell the news.
“Is that so? Then, I’ll go to—”
But before she could even finish the thought, a graceful voice intervened.
“Tell them that we’ll call them a little later.”
Obviously enough, it was Ethan.
At the strange situation she now found herself in, Reina tilted her head to the side and gave Ethan a puzzled expression.
However, he just answered her with a unique smile and immediately ordered the priest who brought the news to deliver his message. He spoke in a cold voice.
“Come to think of it, House Stymist communicates a bit too frequently. Tell those in charge of the network to block them for the time being.”
“Huh?”
It’s only natural that they’re calling frequently since Reina ordered some tools from them though?
“Those are important calls, Ethan.”
“Not at all, Reina.”
?
What kind of conversation was this?
Looking up at him confusedly, a soft and kind—but nonetheless firm and strict—voice answered.
“You don’t have to be in charge of it personally. All this will be handled by me and the others.”
“…I don’t think it should be like that, Ethan.”
As she crumpled her nose at his negative reaction, Ethan once again shook his head and began to persuade Ethan.
“Just think about it, Reina.”
And subsequently, he went on a very long explanation of how inefficient it would be if all efforts were made by just one person.
In other words, he was talking about an appropriate division of tasks.
“Hmm… Now that I hear it.”
“So, I’ll be in charge of communicating with House Stymist from now on.”
As she had been positively persuaded, Reina nodded gladly. Then, she replied brightly.
“That’s a relief. Then, I can start a full-fledged discussion with House Penfound about the patients’ meals! Reverend, please let the others know that I’ll call House Penfound in an hour or two!”
“……”
Oh, what to do. A bastard here, a scumbag there. Wherever Reina looked, Ethan went running.
* * *
Ever since Ethan started helping her out with work, Reina had more free time these days. She left him to his own devices and went out alone.
“I already knew his obsession’s getting stronger, but it’s really getting worse these days.”
There were even a few times when Reina would catch Ethan looking visibly nervous—like a parent who’s worried that something might happen to their child, so they’d rather keep their child at home all the time.
“Hmm… I’ll clear up a day for him so we can have a talk about this.”
As she was thinking about her relationship with Ethan like that…
“Noona!”
Eli called out to her. It’s been a while since the sandwich incident.
Perhaps he had erased it from his mind in the meantime, but as he was approaching Reina, he was waving happily at her.
Watching as Eli was rushing to her like a honeybee towards honey, Reina wanted to match that energy and meet him halfway.
However.
Fwip—!
“Huh?”
All of a sudden, she was pulled back. It was thanks to Ethan, who skillfully slinked his arm around her waist and pulled her very close to himself.
“Ethan?”
Abruptly finding herself leaning right on his chest, Reina was rightfully flustered. But then, a ridiculous excuse came forth.
“You nearly stepped on an ant.”
Lashes fluttering down, Reina looked at the ground and stared hard, but she soon looked up and made eye contact with him again.
Ant, he said. The ground was without even a single stone, let alone an ant.
“…I didn’t know that you cared that much about the life of a single ant, Ethan.”
“Each life is precious.”
‘You’re just saying anything now, seriously.’
Somehow, he’s getting more and more shameless, more and more sly as the days went by.
“Noona. What’s going on?”
With Reina not noticing him until now, Eli walked closer and asked her. Ethan then suddenly stuck out his hand.
Eli deftly evaded by leaning back his torso.
“…What are you doing, Your Excellency?”
“That’s what I want to ask. What are you doing?”
“What exactly have I done?”
“You were about to touch Reina thoughtlessly.”
“I don’t think that’s something you should say, when you yourself has done the same ‘thoughtless’ act, Your Excellency.”
At the rebuttal that’s been relentlessly served to him, Ethan answered back, his tone as glacier-like as ever.
“I’m under the impression that you have three lives, Elijah Jehardt. Given that you continue living your life despite that tongue in your mouth that keeps uttering such foul language.”
The underlying meaning was, of course, that he’d lose those lives one at a time, sooner or later.
But still, Eli was putting up a tough fight.
“Oh, even if my mouth is crooked, I tend to say things straight. There is no need for life preservation when I know I’m right.”
Watching the heated argument unfold before her, Reina eventually let out a huff that blew her fringe up.
‘Why are you both so dang childish, huh?’
She regarded Eli first. It was her man who started the petty scuffle first, so she smiled awkwardly on his behalf.
“Eli, let’s talk later. Is that alright?”
It’s lucky that he backed down right away.
“Yes… Okay, Noona.”
His discouraged answer sounded almost like a whimper. As Eli walked away, it looked to Reina like he was a puppy with drooping ears. The sight of him like this made her heart ache.
Reina turned to the one who was left here with her.
“Ethan, really. What’s going on with you these days.”
When Reina asked this not-really-question question, Ethan responded with an ‘all-purpose smile’. Wanting him to quit it already, Reina put on a stern face.
“Don’t try to use your face with me just to gloss this over again. I’m not letting it slide this time.”
Slightly freezing up the moment she handed down her warning, Ethan stepped closer and gingerly took her fingertips.
“I’m sorry, Reina.”
Haa…
Whenever faced with everyone else, this guy would bristle with such palpable murderous energy. Yet whenever he was faced with her, he’d become such a meek and gentle man.
Maybe that’s why she could never get properly angry with him every time something like this would happen.
