The Reason Why She Can’t Get Married - Chapter 50
Chapter 50
Finally, unable to contain herself any longer, she burst out. It was so sudden that Selena couldn’t stop her.
“Are you done talking, Sir?! Who said I’d marry someone like you?!”
“Y-Your Highness…?”
Dominique, who had been chatting with his men, was startled by Gabriella’s sudden outburst. They all turned towards the cave entrance. They saw Gabriella, her face flushed crimson, fuming, and Selena, looking flustered, grabbing her arm.
“N-No, how…?”
“We clearly tied you up with ropes…”
The men were dumbfounded by their escape. Dominic, however, noticed something else.
“Did you… Did you hear everything?”
“Yes, I heard everything! You bast*rd, when we get back, I won’t let you get away with this!”
Gabriella, who had never raised her voice at Dominique before, screamed in fury. Selena, watching Dominic’s face slowly harden, felt a sense of foreboding.
He wouldn’t let them go back easily after she threatened him like that.
‘Damn it, we’re doomed. We have to run, now.’
They had to act before they reacted. Selena grabbed Gabriella’s hand and, without a word, darted to the side. “Let’s go, Your Highness! We can talk later! Now’s the time to run!”
Dominique and his men, momentarily stunned by the two women suddenly emerging from the cave and sprinting towards the forest, finally came to their senses.
“D*mn it… Catch them! Now!” Dominique yelled, realizing that if he let them escape, not only would his social ascension be impossible, but his life might be in danger.
Selena ran for her life, pulling Gabriella along. People often make extreme choices when driven to extremes. In other words, if they were going to die anyway, they might as well try to eliminate the two women here and bury them forever.
“Gasp… Huff… my lady… Huff… I can’t breathe…” The problem was, once again, Selena’s attire and Gabriella’s weakened state were hindering them.
Selena’s dress was unsuitable for running through the rough forest, and Gabriella’s stamina had deteriorated further after being kidnapped and unconscious.
“No, Your Highness! Just a little further…!”
As Selena desperately encouraged Gabriella, her dress snagged on a protruding branch, causing her to stumble. At the same time, Gabriella, completely out of breath, let go of Selena’s hand and collapsed, gasping for air.
‘This is insane!’
Selena yanked her dress free from the branch. The fabric ripped, but she ignored it and rushed back to Gabriella. As she helped Gabriella to her feet, she spotted the men closing in and froze. The two women backed away slowly, hand in hand. Gabriella spoke calmly.
“Stop here, Sir Dixon. Don’t do anything you’ll regret.”
“It’s too late, Your Highness. There’s no going back.”
Dominique, pushing through his men, strode towards them. He held a knife in his hand. The glint of the sharp blade sent a shiver down Selena’s spine. She shielded the Princess behind her and frowned.
“So, you’re going to continue acting foolishly?”
“Ha, what do you know to call me foolish?”
“Threatening Her Highness like this is foolish enough. This is a serious crime that could lead to your family’s downfall. Do you understand?”
Selena’s condescending tone infuriated him.
“Shut up! That d*mned family… They treated me coldly just because I was born later, even though I’m more capable than my brother! I should have been the heir! They treated me unfairly!”
He stamped his foot, venting his resentment. Selena’s expression clearly conveyed her thoughts: ‘So what?’ What did their suffering have to do with his unfair treatment within his family?
“So, you approached the Princess intentionally? Deliberately orchestrating dangerous situations?”
“I didn’t do it to harm the Princess. She was lonely anyway. If things worked out between us, it would have been good for both of us.”
“Don’t try to rationalize your actions with such nonsense.”
“You orchestrated this dangerous situation to gain the Princess’s favor because you have nothing to offer and no skills of your own.”
Dominique flinched at Selena’s sharp accusation, his face crumpling. “I told you to shut up! This is all your fault. Everything was going smoothly until you showed up!”
“Oh, yes, how smoothly things were going. You, incapable of doing anything on your own, just flitting around, probing high-ranking women, constantly searching for a chance to climb the social ladder.”
Selena’s sarcasm was sharp, and his face darkened. He thrust his sword toward her. Selena stumbled back as the cold blade pointed at her.
‘What do I do…?’
A thought suddenly struck her.
‘The flute!’
Frantically, she searched her pocket. Noel’s flute was there. Selena pulled it out and blew with all her might. A shrill sound pierced the air. As the men stared, taken aback, she blew again and again.
‘You said you’d come if I blew it, Your Grace!’
Breathless, she played on, but Noel didn’t appear. It was, perhaps, to be expected, but Selena felt tears prick her eyes. Dominique, sword in hand, stepped closer, a cruel smile twisting his lips.
“I won’t be the only one ruined. This is all your fault, so you’ll take the blame.”
“Don’t be absurd, Dominique Dixon. You ruined your own life.”
“Ha! Let’s see how long you can keep up that haughty act!” Dominique raised his sword high. Selena, struggling to maintain her composure, squeezed her eyes shut.
