The Reason Why She Can’t Get Married - Chapter 49
Chapter 49
Selena’s eyes narrowed. When she thought of a marquess’s son close to the Princess, only Dominique Dixon came to mind.
‘As I suspected, it’s Sir Dixon.’
She’d had a bad feeling about him all along, which is why she’d suggested they escape. Still, a bitter taste filled her mouth. Gabriella liked him so much she’d even personally requested Selena’s help. Selena had hoped he wasn’t truly awful.
“He said he’d take charge of the search party so we could slip away. Isn’t this going wrong?”
“No way… Just wait a little longer. He’s supposed to be coming here soon.”
At the mention of Dominique Dixon’s imminent arrival, Selena’s expression hardened. Whoever the culprit was, it was best to escape without encountering them.
Pressing herself against the wall, she carefully examined the situation outside.
‘How can we escape without being seen?’
Her eyes darted around, desperately searching for an escape route.
“Ah, you’ve arrived!”
Suddenly, the men lined up and bowed. Selena’s gaze naturally followed their movements. The person approaching, accepting their greetings, was familiar.
‘Dominique Dixon…’
He swaggered toward the men.
“Hey, are you keeping a close eye on Her Highness and that damned lady?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Good. Make sure they don’t escape. Understand?”
“Of course, sir. But, um, when are you planning to take them?” one of the men asked obsequiously.
Dominique, hands in his pockets, stood with a cocky slant. “I’ll take them within tomorrow, so just hang in there a little longer.”
“Understood. We’re keeping them safe and sound, so don’t worry.”
“Really? Tsk, I wouldn’t mind if that damned marquess’s daughter got a few scratches.”
Dominique stroked his chin, tilting his head from side to side. Selena scoffed. She knew he was referring to her.
‘Seriously? As if he isn’t a damned marquess’s son himself.’ He was far worse than her, personality-wise.
“She’s been strangely interfering with my plans lately, and I don’t like it. I originally only planned to kidnap the Princess, but she needlessly got involved and tagged along.”
Dominique’s original plan was to cleanly kidnap Gabriella and stage a dramatic rescue. However, with Selena’s involvement, his plan had gone awry.
The situation had unfolded in an unexpected direction, forcing him to rack his brains. He spoke in an irritated voice. “And unlike the dimwitted Princess, she seems to be quite perceptive. Once things go well with the Princess, I’ll immediately cast her aside and ruin her, really.”
“But can you really win the Princess’s heart with a kidnapping scheme like this?” one of the men cautiously asked the grumbling Dominique.
Blinded by the promised reward, he’d participated in the kidnapping, but he wondered if such a scheme could truly capture the cold-hearted Princess.
“Of course. You just don’t know how childish and simple-minded the Princess is. I’ll create a dramatic situation, appear a few times like a prince, and she’ll be smitten.”
“Ooh, really?”
“Yeah, honestly, it’s so easy to win her over, it’s almost boring. It’s hilarious how her eyes glaze over with love every time she sees me.”
Dominique chuckled, shamelessly mocking Gabriella in front of strangers.
“That foolish Princess will probably confess her love or propose marriage as soon as I rescue her.”
He lifted his chin, brimming with arrogance. Selena clenched her fists, fury bubbling inside her. She wanted to rush out and punch that smug face.
“Then, do you have no feelings for the Princess at all, sir?”
“Hmm, well, it’s not like I have absolutely no feelings for her. Is there any man in the world who would refuse a beautiful woman who can also elevate my status?”
“No, sir.”
“So, she’s a stepping stone to help me rise above my damned brother.”
Dominique’s lips twisted into a sinister smile.
“I’ve resented him ever since I was pushed aside from the heir position. I’m not inferior to him in any way. I’ll use the Princess to rise higher than him.”
Selena sensed a deep-seated inferiority complex in his muttered vow. She also recalled his history of pursuing women of higher status before meeting Gabriella.
‘He’s a typical second son, consumed by inferiority and jealousy towards the eldest.’
As far as Selena knew, the Marquess of Dixon’s eldest son had a decent reputation. At least, he wasn’t stupid and selfish enough to orchestrate something as foolish and reckless as this.
“Besides, the Princess is like a puppy wagging its tail with just a little affection. She’s perfect for improving my fortunes!” He burst into laughter.
‘That lunatic! When we get back, I’ll tell the Emperor or someone…’
Selena, vowing revenge, was overlooking one crucial fact. The person who would be most enraged by this truth was none other than Gabriella. Even Selena, who wasn’t directly involved, was trembling with indignation.
Gabriella, who had been listening to the entire conversation from behind her, felt it even more intensely. Betrayal, anger, shame, resentment… Overwhelmed by a whirlwind of emotions, Gabriella’s body trembled.
