The Omega Princess and Her Two Leashes - Chapter 79
Chapter 79
The investigation of the Demonas spies was transferred to Crescent Modreo that evening, along with all the accumulated records and evidence. The official who handed them over made no attempt to hide his disdain. As he turned to leave, he even clicked his tongue loud enough for Crescent to hear, muttering, “Stealing his younger brother’s credit… how can he be an older brother and act like this…?”
Crescent’s hands trembled as he flipped through the documents. “This…!” He opened his mouth to hurl insults at the departing official, but then closed it again. Another outburst here would only further damage his already abysmal reputation.
‘Why has it come to this?’
Crescent pondered the question he’d asked himself hundreds, if not thousands, of times. He still had no answer. He had always believed his life, as the eldest son of the Duke, would be a smooth, effortless ascent. An alpha among alphas, second only to royalty. Yet, somewhere along the line, Camin had started blocking his path.
Camin, whom Crescent had considered beneath him, had somehow climbed this high. Camin Modreo. A black-hearted, insidious fox. That such a creature could be seen as an upright, noble, and loyal knight… everyone must be fooled. But no matter how many times Crescent insisted on it, no one believed him.
Instead, his own reputation only worsened. He had even begun to lose his father’s trust. He was well past the age to be named heir, and even Crescent couldn’t miss the obvious: his father was waiting for Camin to return from his position as the Princess’s knight. And now this.
The royal family had assigned him the Demonas investigation, yet they provided no support, no assistance, not even a single person to aid him. Just these records and a box of evidence. They clearly wanted him to fail.
‘Why am I treated like this?’
Crescent gritted his teeth, swallowing the surge of curses rising in his throat. Everyone acknowledged and favored Camin Modreo, that fox, while ignoring him, the rightful heir. They all believed Camin’s words, but no one believed his. Everyone… only him. Why wouldn’t they… him?
“Ha…!”
Crescent let out a dry laugh, his grip on the documents so tight they nearly crumpled. But this situation was finally coming to an end. Hadn’t he just been handed the opportunity to turn everything around? Clutching the files and the box of evidence, Crescent made his way through several corridors and staircases to a secluded area, finally opening a door.
Waiting inside the room was, “I’ve been expecting you, Crescent Modreo.” Princess Fleurose’s Arlenrose Vi Fleurose. Crescent hesitated, his steps faltering as he followed the sound of her voice. His inherent indecisiveness made him second-guess himself now that the moment had arrived.
He wasn’t sure if he should enter, if he should share this information with the princess. Arlenrose’s advice had led him to this opportunity, this chance to gain recognition. But sharing confidential investigation records and evidence with an outsider was a serious crime. He already had the opportunity; perhaps he could continue the investigation himself, avoiding such a transgression. His prolonged hesitation didn’t go unnoticed. Arlenrose, who had been watching him, smiled brightly.
“I knew you were capable of it, Crescent. You’ve proven my faith in you correct. Truly excellent, Crescent Modreo.”
“Ah…” The words of affirmation were sweet, like a long-awaited sip of water in the desert of his parched need for recognition. Even if Arlenrose Vi Fleurose was a powerless princess in name only, she was still royalty.
Her acknowledgment was enough to fuel his sense of superiority. Of course, that wasn’t the only reason he had agreed to collaborate with her. There was a more compelling motive.
“Your Highness, what did you say your reason was for helping me?” It was a question Crescent had asked the princess repeatedly. By now, it should have been tiresome, yet Arlenrose showed no sign of impatience. In her gentle tone, she provided the answer he sought. “I told you, didn’t I? I want Camin Modreo to remain my knight, permanently.”
