The Omega Princess and Her Two Leashes - Chapter 29
Chapter 29
“By the way,” Arlenrose said, her voice tinged with a hint of disappointment, “I had thought you would return with nothing since you didn’t even give any hint. But I was wrong. As expected of Sir Camin.”
“We are not at a stage where we can call it a success yet.”
“But that does not seem to be how His Highness, the Crown Prince, sees it. He already covets you, and if you accomplish this feat, he will be all the more eager to take you away.”
“You need not worry. I will always be Your Highness’s escort knight.”
“Don’t worry. As I’ve said before, Sir Camin, you are too precious to be kept as a mere escort knight.”
“Please refrain from saying such things. How could the position of Your Highness’s escort knight ever be considered mere?”
“I do not mean to belittle it, but it is a fact that you are not able to fully utilize your abilities in this position. And so…”
Camin’s expression hardened at her words.
“Your Highness. I apologize, but if you are going to ask me to resign again, I will not listen.”
He was as stubborn as ever. Arlenrose, having confirmed his resolve once more, nodded with a wry smile.
“I will not ask. It would be futile anyway. But if you ever do decide to resign, please tell me immediately. I would hate for you to hesitate, feeling sorry for me.”
“That will never happen.”
Arlenrose’s wry smile deepened at his repeated insistence.
“Yes, I understand.”
Arlenrose had mixed feelings whenever she confirmed that he had no intention of giving up his position as her escort knight. As Diabolus, she should have been more relieved, as it would have been easier for her to move about more freely if he were to quit. But the omega who was secretly in love with him did not feel the same. So, while she was disappointed deep down, she was also relieved at the same time.
Camin Modreo’s reason for staying by her side was simply out of loyalty as a childhood friend. Even though she knew this well, she could not help but feel a flutter in her heart.
How foolish of her. Camin and her will never be together, not in this lifetime.
As if to comfort him, Arlenrose gently tugged at his collar and smiled.
“Sir Camin, you are so devoted to me, and yet I have nothing to offer you in return. I am truly sorry. That is why I say this.”
“Your Highness does not need to offer me anything in return.”
Arlenrose’s gaze met his directly at his resolute words.
“Please do not leave me again.”
A hint of desperation flickered in his deep emerald eyes before quickly fading away.
“Camin…”
Arlenrose, who had been looking at him, lowered her gaze. She could not bear to meet his eyes, knowing what his words meant.
He was referring to the three years between when she had suddenly disappeared from the royal palace five years ago and her eventual return.
It had been a secret plan, so of course she had not given him any notice when she left. And so, the boy had suddenly lost his only friend in the royal palace. Arlenrose could not help but feel terribly sorry for him whenever she thought back on it.
Even then, Arlenrose had been secretly in love with him. But at the time, even that feeling had been a source of torment. An omega who had to live her entire life pretending to be an alpha, and yet she had fallen in love with a true alpha. She had berated herself, saying that even her feelings proved that she was nothing more than an omega. It was a feeling that made her hate herself even more than she already did.
That was why Camin had been included among the reasons why Arlenrose had wanted to run away from the royal palace. At the time, she had been so consumed by her own feelings that she had not had considered his feelings.
When she returned to the royal palace three years later, the childhood friend she met again had grown into an unrecognizable, strong man. Enough to make her heart, which she had only just managed to calm, race once more. No, perhaps even more than that.
Only his emerald eyes, which resembled the forest, remained the same. Arlenrose had always loved that color. It was the color of a meadow shimmering in the sunlight, full of gentleness and warmth. It always made her feel at ease.
But the emerald eyes that day were neither gentle nor warm. They were more like cold emeralds than the warm forest.
Unfathomable emotions flickered behind the eyes. Emotions that seemed both desperate and fragile, as if they could shatter at any moment.
