At her response, the emperor suddenly burst into laughter.
“Bwahahahaha!”
He laughed so hard, punching the stone walls of the underground staircase, that his face turned purplish with the effort.
He even had to sit down on the steps, wheezing from his exertions.
The servants rushed to cushion his fall and offered him strong liquor to calm him.
“Oh my, oh my!”
The emperor chuckled, thumping his chest.
Radis looked at him with a mix of pity and astonishment.
A few sips of the liquor brought the color back to his face.
Wiping the tears from the corner of his eyes, the emperor spoke,
“I must admit, I’m quite taken by your spirited nature. If the thought of bearing two Geas is so dreadful to you, how about becoming a part of the Order of the White Dragon? If you swear to sever all ties with Marquis Russell, I’ll retract my threat to shatter your mana core and place only one Geas on you.”
Radis chose her words carefully before replying.
“I shall accept the Geas for learning the imperial swordsmanship, provided that Your Majesty will unconditionally release my teacher from his Geas. I think I might grow quite fond of your generosity then.”
At her words, the emperor collapsed back onto the steps.
“Bahaha— gyahaha!”
Radis sighed, massaging her forehead.
She had thought Prince Olivier was the only one with such an exaggerated reaction to her words, but it seemed Emperor Claude was no different.
‘Like father like son, it seems.’
Radis kept that thought to herself, guessing neither Prince Olivier nor Emperor Claude would appreciate the comment.
After a few more rounds of strong liquor, which barely calmed the emperor, he staggered to continue.
“That’s… obviously not happening…!”
Barely containing her irritation, Radis politely responded.
“Then I will accept both Geases. But unless you wish me dead on the spot, do not ask for my loyalty to you.”
Following Radis down the staircase, Emperor Claude looked at her with wide eyes.
“I’ve seen countless knights in my life, but never one like you.”
“Thank you.”
“Hmm, where did such a unique child spring from?”
“……”
“Hah! You truly catch my eye. I promise not to be stingy with your treatment so that you won’t regret making such a brave decision.”
“……”
Before they knew it, they had reached the bottom of the long staircase.
A massive door stood before them, opened by the emperor’s servants who were already downstairs.
Proudly, the emperor announced,
“You’ve never been here before, have you? This is the archive of the White Dragon Order.”
Beyond the door lay a gray expanse. A wide circular courtyard sat at the center, with massive libraries radiating out from it like spokes.
Pointing at the lined libraries, the Emperor boasted.
“Apart from the Rafal Tower, this is the only place that holds such an extensive collection on mana and spells.”
Radis, who had struggled to find books on magic and spells, narrowed her eyes at the emperor.
It seemed he had declared all books related to magic as forbidden, then subsequently hoarded them all here for himself.
“Anyway, that’s not what’s important right now.”
The emperor walked towards the center of the courtyard.
There, a large hexagonal object was simply placed.
Emperor Claude proudly spoke.
“This magical device is called the ‘Womb’. It’s a unique and precious treasure in the empire.”
Radis slowly walked up to the device and looked it over.
The structure of the magical device was simple.
Within a hexagon of shining brass edges, a giant bubble-like object hung alone.
Radis reached out to touch the bubble-like object.
The transparent wall neither burst nor pushed her hand away.
Her fingers passed right through the transparent barrier.
It felt like dipping her hand into lukewarm water.
Soon after, something began to pull at her fingers.
Startled by the unexpected suction, Radis jerked her hand back.
“A barrier?”
It felt similar to the barrier surrounding the Underworld Tree she had seen in the forbidden region.
However, while that barrier repelled external intrusions, this one seemed to pull things towards it.
She looked up at the entire device.
Its metal edges were densely engraved with spells.
And, there were two types of engravings: raised and indented.
The two spells were intricately intertwined, making it difficult to discern their purpose at a glance.
