Ciel hurried back to the Leopardt mansion. After preparing at once so that he could return to the Closch Barony, he swung by the annex to pick up the waiting Aiden, and the both of them quickly went to the warp portal for instantaneous travel.
Their destination was the nearest estate to the Closch Barony that had a warp portal so that they could meet up with Rouman. However, Rouman was already there, waiting for the duke’s arrival.
“Rouman? Why are you here…”
“I apologize, Your Grace.”
“Haa… It’s fine. I was already expecting not to be accepted right away.”
“I have no face to show you, sir.”
“Never mind.”
“Brother…”
“It’s alright, Aiden.”
Aiden recalled the sudden piece of news that he heard about a few days ago. He didn’t know much about his older brother in detail, but he did hear that numerous noble ladies subtly try to flirt with him.
Of course, Aiden didn’t hear about this directly, rather only through the thoughts of people back in the temple. Even so…
The fact that his older brother had suddenly announced that he wanted to get married was shocking—especially considering how he’s going as far as preparing such grand presents just to show how much he’s thinking of Lady Closh.
Aiden himself welcomed this. He thought that it would be great if the lady could become his sister-in-law.
For some reason, he felt so relaxed by her side.
“Let’s settle down here first.”
“Yes, Your Grace. I’ve prepared everything.”
Ciel and Aiden traveled together with Rouman to reach the lodgings. As soon as he got the chance to rest, Ciel abruptly felt his energy getting all tangled up, as if his insides were turning upside down.
“Huu… It was fine while I was around Irene.”
Whenever his condition would get tangled up like this, it was always because of the impure energy wreaking havoc at random. It couldn’t possibly feel pleasant.
Forced to shove down this foul sensation, he left the lodgings and went outside impulsively.
He only intended to go somewhere there weren’t any other people, but he quickly reached the Closch estate through his power over the wind. Gliding through the air as the sun was setting across the horizon, he landed on one of the branches of the enormous tree behind the mansion—the same tree he was perched upon when he first came here.
From his spot, he had a clear view of the rear garden of the baron’s mansion. That’s where he found Irene.
“Ah…”
It hadn’t been long since they parted, but he was filled with an overwhelming sense of euphoria just seeing her again. He was already considering going down from his perch and go to her side if she was alone, but as soon as he could see behind one particular tree branch, he found that she was not alone.
“……”
The one standing beside her was an adult man with a muscular build. He’s looking at her with a big smile.
The sight alone filled Ciel with rage.
He was instantly overcome by the urge to shout, to order that bastard to get away from her, but…
As he saw Irene smiling brightly just like the bastard, his rage evaporated and was replaced by another strong emotion.
Dread.
She wouldn’t even show him the smallest of smiles, but she was now smiling so widely at that man next to her.
The two of them were in front of a pile of branches, and as the man lifted them one at a time, he repeatedly broke through them. Whenever that happened, Irene spoke kindly to the man.
Ciel’s hearing was far superior to an ordinary person’s, so he could hear everything she was saying.
“A teaspoon. Clear your mind of everything else and think of only a teaspoon. Now, keep that image in mind, then try lifting one branch.”
Hearing her soft and gentle voice should have soothed Ciel, but instead, he just felt heavier and heavier. Who the hell was that bastard who’s receiving her beautiful smile?
As Ciel glared outright, the smiling man who’s holding a branch looked exactly in the direction where Ciel was, his expression now serious.
“Hah… What is that?”
The man’s reflexes were far too quick and accurate to say that he was just a good knight. So, the possibility crossed Ciel’s mind.
Was that guy also an Esper—
At that moment, an unknown thing suddenly flew in from afar. Ciel repelled it through his wind without a second thought.
It was the same branch that the man was holding just now. Only, it shattered right in front of Ciel and was now being blown away by his wind.
Did that guy really just throw the branch straight at him with such accuracy and precision?
“A physical Esper?”
The only ones who could possibly achieve such a feat were either a swordmaster or a physical Esper.
All of a sudden, Ciel felt as if he’d been hit on the back of the head. In the past, he didn’t know that Aiden was an Esper as well. It’s not as if things had changed between the past and the present—it’s just that Ciel did not know about it.
Now that he was in this situation, he couldn’t help but think. What if there were other Espers like Aiden? Then, what should he do?
Ciel became momentarily dazed as he was faced with the existence of an Esper who he did not know.
But right then, he saw a figure running like a bull from a distance. The man who had been busy flirting with Irene just now was rushing straight towards Ciel with uninhibited hostility.
Ciel then made eye contact with Irene, who was not far behind the man. The broad smile she had just now, reserved only for the other man, evaporated like water that had been taken by the wind.
It was in this split second that Ciel could no longer press down on the burning speculation that’s been in the back of his mind until now. He activated his powers.
The enormous tree shook as he created a strong gust that was rushed towards Irene.
As she was lifted high into the air, instead of screaming or yelling at Ciel, Irene wordlessly glared at him.
A high-pitched, metal-like sound rang between his ears, and his pupils were filled with the sight of only Irene, headed towards him while being carried by his wind.
