My Past Life is Riddled With Many Sins - Chapter 8
[NOTE: The previous version of Chapter 7 is actually Chapter 8. Chapter 7 has been fixed now, so if you have the time, please read them again. Thank you very much.]
“End your useless thoughts here.”
Regina deliberately spoke aloud and sprang up from the bed. It seemed too early to sleep, and feeling the need for practice, she wielded her dagger. Although the narrowness of the room limited her movements, she concentrated. Before she knew it, dawn had arrived.
It was time to leave.
Regina packed her belongings, took out her robe, and put it on. She pulled the hood down to cover her eyes and went down to the first floor to return the key. The innkeeper asked in a gruff voice.
“You haven’t eaten a meal, have you? I mentioned that two meals are included in the room rate. I’ll prepare it for you, so eat before you go.”
“Oh, it’s alright. I need to leave now.”
“Our inn is famous for its delicious food. What if you leave without eating? It’ll be quick, so sit down!”
The innkeeper went into the kitchen with a huff.
Regina blinked. Despite the rough tone, it seemed like the innkeeper would be disappointed if she left without eating.
‘It’s early, and I’ve pulled the hood down. It should be fine.’
Regina sat in the most secluded spot. The enticing aroma wafted through the air, and soon the innkeeper appeared with plates in both hands.
“I’ve prepared two meals for you. Eat your fill, and if there’s anything left, either take it with you or leave it. Your choice!”
With a stern remark, the innkeeper turned around and left. If she left the food, the innkeeper would undoubtedly be disappointed. Regina decided to finish it before leaving.
Regina picked up the utensils. Unaware of her refined gesture, her stomach was already reacting to the aroma of the food.
Whether the market’s term ‘side dish’ was appropriate or not, the food melted in her mouth from the first bite. If only she had the money, she would want to hire a personal chef.
‘Even if I graduate from the academy in the shortest time, it’s four years. Even if I work like a dog becoming a vassal of a noble with some influence, it would still take 5-6 years until the family’s situation improves.’
Regina concluded that it would take a minimum of 9-10 years to be able to hire the innkeeper as a full-time chef. Of course, it was uncertain whether the innkeeper would still be working at this inn until then.
As Regina was almost finishing her meal, she heard footsteps coming down the stairs. It wasn’t just one or two people, it sounded like a group.
Regina pulled the hood back down from her eyes to her nose. She quickly shoved the remaining food into her mouth and quietly stood up.
Without a word of thanks to the innkeeper for the meal, Regina headed towards the door, which ultimately proved to be a hasty decision. Just as she was about to open the door, a gust of wind blew in, and she collided with someone entering.
Regina was pushed back and awkwardly sat down with a thud.
“Uh…”
As Regina was rubbing her forehead with a scrunched-up expression, she realized her hood had come off.
“Yekarna?”
A name that shouldn’t have been heard echoed. A male voice.
Frozen for a moment, Regina immediately pulled her hood back and hastily rushed out. Her heart felt like it had been struck in two. Her mind was in disarray.
He recognized me.
Just like I recognized him at a glance, he recognized me as Yekarna!
Regina was running in a disarray when suddenly her throat tightened.
What?
As she struggled, Regina realized that her feet were slightly off the ground. Someone had grabbed the back of her clothes and lifted her up.
Regina hesitated to confirm who was holding her by the scruff, but she couldn’t resist the hand that gripped her face and turned it. Their eyes met.
Oh, his eyes are silver.
In this life, it’s not his hair but his eyes that are silver. In the previous life, they were violet.
Without realizing it, Regina was staring blankly. His lips, which had been tightly sealed, began to move.
“I thought I saw something wrong again…”
There was a strange ecstasy in his drawn-out words.
“It’s really you. Your Majesty.”
His gaze was excessively intense and penetrating.
Of course. Meeting the enemy from the past life, how many calm and collected individuals could there be?
Regina was driven by survival instincts and immediately put on a vague expression.
“Yes?”
She equipped herself with an innocent gaze that the Empress Yekarna would never have, pretending not to understand.
“What are you talking about?”
After a short silence, he questioned with a lowered voice.
“What kind of trick is this again?”
“No, noble sir, why do you speak to a commoner like me with such high language? Please speak comfortably.”
Waving her hand as if to express her helplessness, Regina felt his gaze persistently sticking to her.
Regina put on a performance of her utmost dedication. It’s commonly said, ‘Even if kidnapped by a dragon, one can survive if they regain their senses.’ She must not be shaken. Now that it’s come to this, she should consistently maintain an attitude of not knowing anything about her ‘past’ life.
I don’t know anything. Why do you address me as Your Majesty? Are you mistaken about something? Yekarna? Who is that? Why are you suddenly talking to me like this?
As she recited such sentences in her mind, Regina pretended to be frightened. He furrowed his brow as if he had seen something he couldn’t bear to look at.
Regina understood his feelings. If there had been a mirror, she would have felt sick seeing her own repulsive appearance.
Anyway, Regina hoped that he would either judge her not to be Yekarna’s reincarnation, or, even if she were, believe that she didn’t remember her past life. She would be grateful for the latter, as he was not the type to pour out resentment on someone who couldn’t remember anything. At least the Friedrich Yekarna knew was that kind of man.
She lowered her eyes and stole a glance at him then cowered as if she couldn’t be more servile.
Just like an innocent commoner unable to resist the curiosity about someone of high stature even while not knowing what the situation is and was scared.
