My Contract Husband is Going Crazy Because of My Iron Wall - Chapter 40.2
Chapter 40.2
“Then do you know of any stray cats?”
“No, I don’t. Why are you asking?”
Reinhardt sighed and brushed his bangs out of his face.
“I can’t lie and say I’ve fed it when I haven’t…”
“Fed what?”
“Nevermind. Go to sleep.”
“Tell me! Don’t tell me… Are you worried about her again?!”
“That’s not true.”
“Even though you’re on vacation, I welcome your romantic advice. Please, tell me anything that’s on your mind!”
“You’re just bluffing when you yourself got dumped.”
As if in shock, Jade flipped his covers over his head and pretended to cry. “It’s bad enough that I was dumped before I even confessed, but now even His Excellency the Grand Duke is ignoring me! Woe is me, this wound can only be healed if my salary is tripled!”
Reinhardt left the room in a hurry, fearing that staying there any longer would only make his ears ring, not to mention the lack of help he was receiving. However, he left as much money as he could in his bedroom to prevent him from making a fuss later.
‘I guess I’ll have to find a stray cat myself.’
He left the mansion and began wandering aimlessly. He walked for a long time without even riding a horse for fear of startling the cat, but he couldn’t find a single cat, let alone a mouse.
Then, a beautiful sight caught his eye.
A gray-furred kitten covered in dirt and a lovely woman sitting hunched over, laughing, completely oblivious to the fact that the hem of her dress was getting wrinkled.
“Oh, how fun!”
She was holding a handful of dandelions and waving them around to entice the kitten, making short, unfamiliar sounds.
Reinhardt smiled involuntarily and approached her from behind.
“Irovel.”
“Oh? Reinhardt?”
“Why have you come outside the mansion?”
“I came to get some dandelions. They don’t grow these pitiful but cute weeds in the mansion’s garden. But what brings you here, Reinhardt?”
Reinhardt hesitated, trying not to lie.
“…I’m looking for the cat.”
“I see you haven’t found it yet.”
Irovel glanced at the food in Reinhardt’s hand. She must have deduced that he hadn’t found it yet, seeing that it was still full.
Reinhardt wondered how he should answer, since finding Irovel meant he couldn’t say he hadn’t found it.
Just then, a large cat that looked just like the kitten appeared and took the kitten away into the grass.
“How cute.”
Thanks to the natural change of subject, it seemed he wouldn’t have to lie. Reinhardt nodded, gazing at Irovel.
“It is cute.”
Then he reached out to Irovel, who was still crouched down. She hesitated for a moment, then stood up, grabbing his lapel instead of his hand.
“I’m afraid my heart will race if you hold my hand again.”
She made an awkward excuse and picked a few more dandelions. It seemed she was going to use them as toys for the cat.
“Whose cat are you trying to win over with food and toys?”
“Oh… Do you remember when I mentioned a ‘cat-like Tartar’ on the day I proposed the contract? I’m going to give these to that child.”
Reinhardt was a little surprised that she would bring up the Tartar at this moment.
Winning over a Tartar’s heart was a way of thinking that had never occurred to him in his life. The demon and their servants, the Tartars, had been the enemies of mankind for ages.
Besides, ‘that child’? It felt strange to think of it as familiar, like the kitten he had just seen.
“I haven’t been able to say this because I thought you would be disgusted… but Reinhardt, you’ll have to know someday.”
“Is there a reason why it has to be that Tartar?”
Tartars could only be found in the north. Winning over a Tartar’s heart probably meant that Irovel would have to go to the north and meet one herself.
There must be a reason why she would want to go to the north at this time, when Reinhardt’s trial was approaching.
“Yes. In order to make the words reappear on the imperial decree that His Majesty the Emperor sent, we need the power of that Tartar… or rather, ‘Larboris’.”
It was as he had expected. Reinhardt nodded.
“I see. Is there anything I can do to help?”
“Can you come with me to the north to meet Larboris? It would be too dangerous to go alone, and Reinhardt is the only one who can protect me.”
Reinhardt is the only one.
Those words seemed to tickle Reinhardt’s ears. They sounded like a whisper of love.
“…You don’t even have to ask. I belong to you, after all. To be able to be by your side would be a great hap, no. It would be an honor.”
