Marriage with a Suspiciously Demure Husband - Chapter 95.2
Chapter 95.2
I wanted to ask why he was working so hard, to tell him to just rest, but I stopped myself.
It felt too much like I was fussing over him like we were back to how things used to be. I nodded instead of replying. Kairos pressed a brief kiss to my forehead and left. The click of the door closing made the room feel even larger, and sleep evaded me now.
The clarity I’d hoped would come with time was replaced by a growing confusion. I told myself I’d had no choice, that this was the only option, but…
“Haah…”
Were his actions stemming from Noah Edith? Or were they a performance by Kairos Hadid? Or perhaps… was this simply who Kairos Hadid truly was?
I covered my face with my hands, sighing in frustration.
* * *
Two days passed, and I felt fully recovered.
After being confined to my room, pampered by Kairos and the servants, my curiosity finally got the better of me. Well, it wasn’t just curiosity. I needed to understand Kairos’s routines and the layout of the castle if I ever planned to escape.
This place was far more advantageous for him than his ducal residence in the capital. He’d likely grown up here and could navigate it blindfolded. I, on the other hand, was a complete novice. I needed to avoid bumping into him, and to do that, I needed to establish my own routes.
I’d been too tired and disoriented the past couple of days, falling prey to Kairos’s tactics.
Now, with a clearer head, I couldn’t believe how easily I’d been swayed. I’d nearly made a grave mistake. That wouldn’t happen again. Following the head maid’s guidance, I toured his study, the study and office made available for me, the dining hall, various guest rooms, and the reception rooms.
“Are you tired, Madam?”
Mrs. Tene, the head maid, whose hair was streaked with gray, inquired.
“No, I’m fine.”
“Please, speak informally. There is a place I particularly wanted to show you, and I was wondering if you were up for it.”
“Where is it?”
She smiled and gestured for me to follow. I’d expected the staff at the main Hadid estate to be rather strict. After all, I was a commoner, far from the image they likely had of the ideal duchess.
I wasn’t bothered by my background, but I knew the ducal family might see it differently. While I’d complimented Kairos on the staff’s first impression, most of them possessed a strong, almost austere presence. They were generally fair-skinned, with sharp features that projected an air of confidence.
I felt a bit intimidated at first, but contrary to my concerns, both Mrs. Tene and the butler, who appeared to be in their fifties, were exceptionally kind. Mrs. Tene led me to a magnificent glass conservatory. I hadn’t expected such a structure within the castle’s central courtyard.
Yesterday, I had jokingly compared the castle’s warmth to a greenhouse. It turned out there actually was one.
“… It’s beautiful. Like a work of art.”
My admiration deepened Mrs. Tene’s smile.
“It is indeed lovely to look at, but there is another reason I brought you here.”
She opened the glass door and stepped inside. A wave of humid warmth enveloped me, carrying the fragrant scent of flowers and the gentle murmur of running water.
There was even a table set up for tea.
“As the lady of this house, you are welcome here anytime. The door will always be open to you.”
“Thank you.”
I was lost in the beauty of the space when Mrs. Tene guided me further inside. She’d mentioned a specific reason for showing me this place. Just as I thought of it, I saw another door at the far end.
A stark white metal door, tall and imposing, stood in stark contrast to the vibrant greenery of the conservatory.
“This area is protected by the strongest barrier spells in the entire castle. And below, in the basement, there is a bunker designed to withstand any attack.”
Mrs. Tene retrieved something from her sleeve: a black, rhombus-shaped mana stone. She touched it to the thick metal door, and it slid open smoothly. I hesitated, staring blankly at the opening. Mrs. Tene gestured for me to enter.
…She wanted me to go in there?
