Chapter 93.2

The moment I caught the attention of the three mid-level beasts, I blinded them to halt their movements.

“Now!”

While the beasts paused, clutching their faces and writhing, the mercenaries glanced at me and then charged.

I focused on keeping the beasts’ eyes and feet immobilized. After a fierce struggle and the mercenaries’ relentless sword attacks, two beasts collapsed with a thud, their heads hitting the ground.

“Whew.”

I bound the remaining beast with my signature spell, Illusionary Thorn Vines, wrapping its entire body before I flicked another flame. While I couldn’t conjure a blazing inferno like a fire mage, the flames quickly spread along the vines, engulfing the beast.

At the very least, I’d succeeded in disorienting it.

Finally, a mercenary leaped forward, plunging his sword down.

Thwoom.

The most massive of the beasts collapsed pathetically.

“…Done.”

Now, only five or six smaller beasts remained, and the mercenaries could handle those on their own. I quickly retreated and turned to Ceres, who was staring blankly.

“Ceres?”

“Ah, y-yes? Madam!”

“It looks like things are under control here. I need to go to the front gate.”

I heard a mercenary call out behind me, but I hurried toward the front gate without looking back. A shout of thanks followed me.

Thankfully, the fight at the front gate was almost over.

Around twenty people, including our guards, were gathered there, and the remains of beasts lay scattered across the ground. Off to one side, the carcass of a large beast sprawled lifelessly. As I scanned the scene for Kairos, a chilling sound, a heavy thump followed by the sharp slice of steel, caught my attention.

Turning toward the noise, I saw the head of a humanoid beast fall cleanly to the ground, severed by a man’s sword.

The beast was small, but its glowing red eyes and the purple magic stone embedded in its forehead made it unmistakably distinct.

‘Why is there a follower beast here too…?’

Stunned, I hesitated as the dead follower’s body burst into black flames. In the meanwhile, the other knights and mercenaries quickly cleared the area.

“Whew, we’ll finish cleaning up here and then head to the back gate….”

Kairos, sheathing his sword, turned and our eyes met.

As his red eyes widened before they narrowed in displeasure, he strode towards me with a pace more menacing than any beast.

“Hazel, what are you doing here? Did you not hear me tell you to stay inside?”

Ignoring his anger, I instinctively scanned me from head to toe.

“…Are you hurt…?”

“Hazel.”

I snapped back to reality and looked up at his eyes, blazing with fury.

“I-It’s not that I didn’t listen to you. I just heard a loud noise and came out to see what was happening.”

Kairos’s jaw clenched and unclenched.

“What’s there for you to assess? Do you think this is some kind of game? I told you to stay inside. Did no one hear me say to protect my wife within the room?”

“I-I’m sorry!”

Kairos’s gaze shifted accusingly to Ceres behind me. I stepped sideways, blocking his angry stare.

“I left on my own. Ceres just came to protect me. What could he do when I insisted on leaving? More importantly, that follower just now…was it one, right?”

“Alec! Finish cleaning up here and check outside for any more beasts. Kayla, go to the back gate and assess the situation. Sid, redeploy the mercenaries at the inn once this is resolved.”

Kairos didn’t answer my question, instead scooping me up and carrying me towards the inn. His movements were hurried and urgent.

Startled at being carried like a sack of potatoes, I grabbed his shoulder.

“Wait, wait…! I can walk. I can walk! And the back gate is already taken care of. There’s no need to go there.” Kairos’s red eyes fixed on me.

“…What?”

“There were three large ones at the back gate. The mercenaries were fighting them, so I helped a littl—”

Kairos stopped abruptly, letting out an exasperated breath. His voice, strained and low, was ominous.

“Are my words a joke to you now?”
