Marriage with a Suspiciously Demure Husband - Chapter 93.1
Chapter 93.1
The sound was louder than expected. Startled, I flinched.
“It seems there’s a confrontation going on.”
As I moved towards the window, Ceres blocked my way.
Thump! Thump!
‘That’s not the tremor of a mid-level beast.’
I could faintly hear the beast’s howls. Sitting leisurely on the bed became increasingly uncomfortable.
“Are you sure it’s just a mid-level beast?”
“Yes? Another knight relayed that information…”
Unable to sit still any longer, I rose from the bed. A look of panic flashed across the knights’ faces, but I couldn’t just sit and wait without knowing what was happening outside.
“I’ll just check and be right back. It’ll be quick.”
‘Surely Kairos wouldn’t be easily defeated by some beast…’
But my ingrained, occupational anxiety propelled me forward.
“Hizan, could you get my clothes ready? I need to go out.”
“Pardon? No, madam. You were explicitly told to remain in this room.”
“I’ll just check things out in front. Just a quick look.”
I buttoned the coat Kairos had put on me earlier.
“Madam, we are guarding you, so you needn’t worry. The guards and mercenaries are handling the situation outside.”
Hizan and the two knights took turns trying to stop me. Ignoring them, I headed for the door, where the knight standing guard firmly blocked my path.
“If there are more than two mid-level beasts, there will be over thirty smaller ones. They mostly travel in packs in the North. And that’s not the sound of a mid-level beast. What takes them thirty minutes will take me ten. Hizan, my shoes, please.”
“It’s not about the time, madam. Your safety is our utmost priority…”
Glancing at the clock before leaving, I realized I’d slept for about four hours.
“Hizan, you stay here. Ceres, come with me. You stay here with Hizan. I’ll take care of the aftermath, so don’t worry.”
“Madam!”
‘To think I slept through such a commotion outside…’
I brushed past those trying to stop me and left with only Ceres. He followed, fidgeting nervously.
“Just say I brought you along. You don’t have to worry.”
“B-But still, your safety is paramount….”
Outside, the sounds of the confrontation were clearer. And they weren’t coming from just one location. I could hear fighting from two directions.
“…The back gate too?”
‘Even if it’s dawn and ideal for beast activity, how could they be attacking both the front and back gates simultaneously?’
I stopped midway, needing to decide. Front gate or back gate? Listening intently, the back gate sounded more chaotic with beastly roars. The front gate, by contrast, was relatively quiet. I turned towards the back gate.
‘I need to reduce their numbers before going to the front.’
‘Besides, Kairos might be at the back gate.’
“Ceres, let’s go this way.”
Ceres, looking as if he were about to cry, followed me.
After about a five-minute run towards the back gate, the small village’s gate entrance came into view. Simultaneously, I saw three enormous shadows and people confronting them amid a cloud of dust. Under the streetlights, the dust looked like fog.
I quickly scanned the scene for familiar faces.
‘…He’s not here.’
Among those fighting, I couldn’t see Kairos or any of the other knights. I was about to turn back towards the front gate when I hesitated.
Four mercenaries were at the back gate, facing three animal-type mid-level beasts. Though skilled, the mercenaries were struggling more than I’d expected. It seemed the beasts had attacked the front gate first, drawing everyone there, leaving only the mercenaries staying at the inn to defend the back.
“Sigh…”
The three mid-level beasts, along with the smaller ones swarming around them, were delaying the confrontation.
“Ceres, cover my back.”
“Yes, madam. Don’t worry.”
Ceres, finally giving up on stopping me, drew his sword to protect me. Having made my decision, I quickly moved between the mercenaries.
Positioning myself behind one who seemed relatively less engaged, I prepared to use magic. I was terrible at elemental magic, though I could manage simple spells. Like flickers of lightning, I shot small flames into the beasts’ eyes.
Growl!
