Chapter 100

The third-floor caretaker finished speaking and left. Dekir ran a hand roughly through his hair. It was his third day here; tomorrow would be the fourth. As the caretaker had said, time was running out.

‘After coming this far…’

He had finally succeeded in gaining Heyna’s favor and trust. He couldn’t let this hard-won achievement go to waste. But right now, there was nothing he could do.

‘Heyna…’
All he could do was pray that Heyna would remember him.

***

“Didn’t you say you weren’t coming, Tommy?”

He had said he hated the library. Yet, for some reason, Tommy had followed Dekir and me to the library.

“I changed my mind.”

“I thought you were a very masculine man, Tommy, but you have a surprisingly ladylike side.”

Zion, seemingly displeased, taunted Tommy. “Huh? What nonsense are you spouting?”

“A true gentleman wouldn’t be so fickle, now would he?”

“So what? You want to go a round right here?” Tommy raised his fist, looking ready to strike Zion’s cheek.

‘Zion deserves that, but I should probably intervene.’

“Tommy, calm down. And Zion, apologize to Tommy.”

Zion smiled sweetly. “I’m sorry, Tommy. I didn’t mean to upset you. I suppose I wasn’t considerate of your delicate sensibilities.”

I told him to apologize, not to be sarcastic while pretending to! “You, you…!” Tommy roared. “You scrawny, twig-like thing with nothing but a mouth—!”

“…What?” Zion, who had maintained a smile throughout, furrowed his brow.

“Did I say something wrong? You’re nothing but skin and bones, all bark and no bite.”

“….”

“What are you going to do, glare at me? Hit me? Go ahead, try it. I can handle someone like you with one hand tied behind my back.” Zion, who had been silent, spoke slowly.

“It seems you have no intention of leaving this place, Tommy.” Unlike before, his voice was devoid of any humor.

“What?”

“Lady Heyna and I have been kind to you, but it seems you’ve gotten the wrong idea. Perhaps you should consider the consequences your words and actions here will have on the outside.”

“….”

Tommy bit his lip at Zion’s threat, his clenched fist trembling.

“Zion, even if that’s true, threats are…”

“Threats? My dear Heyna.” Zion resumed his usual lighthearted smile and continued smoothly. “I was merely reminding Tommy of the difference in our social standing. I’m willing to overlook some things given the circumstances, but he still needs to know his place.”

He wasn’t wrong. Under normal circumstances, a commoner like Tommy behaving this way towards Zion and me would be unthinkable. What had just happened could even be considered an insult to royalty, punishable by law. Still… He had started it.

It felt incredibly petty of him to pull the social status card the moment his pride was bruised. Bang! Tommy, eyes bloodshot, slammed his fist on the table. He hit it so hard that the wooden surface cracked. Tommy’s hand was just as mangled.

“Are you alri…?”

Before I could finish, Tommy stormed out.

“Tommy!”

Zion stopped me as I moved to follow.

“Don’t go, Heyna. Tommy is very agitated right now. You might get hurt if you follow him.”

And who’s fault is that?! I swallowed the words that were about to burst forth. I felt bad for Tommy, but I needed to be rational.

‘I can’t waste any more time. I need to find the information we need in the library, and then I’ll deal with Tommy later.’

***

Hours of relentless searching yielded nothing.

“You’ll hurt your eyes if you keep staring at those books.”

“Want some cookies?”

“Your hair is so soft, Heyna. Like a silken thread spun by the gods themselves.”

Zion seemed more interested in chattering beside me than searching for information. Was this really the same Zion who had constantly regarded me with suspicion? Moreover—

[Zion Delius]
Affection [4]
Suspicion [1]

‘Heyna would be a suitable bride for me.’

My affection rating had increased by one, even though I hadn’t given him any particularly agreeable responses.

“Heyna…” Wait, what was that thought at the bottom?! Not only had he presumptuously dropped the honorific, changing from “Lady Heyna” to “Heyna,” but what did he mean by bride?
