Chapter 39.2
There was a lot he wanted to say, that his mother and April were good people—much, much better people than her.
But once again, he couldn’t say anything.
It wasn’t Mrs. Danvers’s caning that scared him, but rather, it was the fear that she might say something nasty about the two of them.
‘I have to do well.’
If he became someone worthy of the Winterville family, someone like his uncle, then Mrs. Danvers wouldn’t be able to say anything. The child thought that as he wrote over and over again until blisters formed on his tender skin from pressing too hard with the quill.

“Oh my God, Asher. What’s this?”
April, who had been happily planning a three-tiered cake with Sophia, made a fuss when she saw the child’s finger. Even though the red marks from the cane on the back of his hand had disappeared, blisters from pressing too hard on the quill pen remained.
The child quickly hid his right hand behind his back.
“It’s because I write a lot.”
“Writing?”
“Yes. I practiced hard because my handwriting was crooked.”
April narrowed her eyes as if trying to gauge the child’s expression before reaching out her hand.
“Can Sister see it?”
After he hesitated for a moment before extending his hand, she knelt down in front of him and examined his small hand. Her heart ached when she saw the convex blisters that didn’t suit the child’s hands.
“Wait a minute. I’ll make some hot chocolate for you.”
April prayed earnestly that the wound on Asher’s hand would completely heal as she made hot chocolate. Then, she asked cautiously as he happily sipped his hot chocolate.
“Why did you keep writing until you got blisters? You can practice your handwriting later.”
“Just because!”
“Did Mrs. Danvers tell you to?”
Asher shook his head vigorously.
“No! I did it just because I wanted to!”
However, she didn’t simply believe his words.
‘Even if she didn’t tell him to, she just left it until he got blisters from writing that much?’
Whether she instructed him or not was an issue, but leaving it unattended was also a problem. As April’s expression stiffened slightly, Asher nervously rolled his eyes and glanced at her.
“Sister, are you angry?”
“Huh? No, no. Oh, you finished all the hot chocolate? Let me take a look at your hands again.”
April opened her mouth with concern as she looked at the child’s hand, where the blister had disappeared without a trace.
“In the future, don’t practice writing so much, okay? Hurrying isn’t always a good thing.”
“Hehe, okay.”
Although Asher chuckled softly as he wiped his mouth stained with hot chocolate, April couldn’t bring herself to smile along.

April left Asher’s room and went to Mrs. Danvers’s room. Suppressing her anger as much as possible, she knocked on the door before Mrs. Danvers opened the door.
Mrs. Danvers didn’t hide her displeasure when she saw that it was April.
“What’s going on?”
“I have something to discuss about Asher.”
“Go ahead.”
Mrs. Danvers crossed her arms arrogantly without even inviting her in. Since April had no desire to sit down for a cup of tea with her and chat, she went straight to the point.
“Today, Asher got blisters on his hand from practicing his handwriting in class.”
“Is that so?”
Mrs. Danvers replied as if she had no idea, though there was no trace of surprise or concern in her response. This lack of reaction only fueled April’s anger, but she desperately kept her composure.
“What on earth did you do that you didn’t even know the child had blisters on his hand? How can you possibly treat a child so harshly?”
She snorted.
“Miss April, as you aren’t of noble birth, you may not understand, but everyone is working diligently. In fact, the Young Master himself received less schooling at his age because he wasn’t yet accustomed to it.”
“Asher is only five years old. Do you truly think this is right?”
“I don’t even understand why Miss April is saying this, and I don’t appreciate you criticizing my teaching methods either. After all, am I not the Young Master’s teacher?”
“I’m…!”
April lost her words and fell silent.
‘Yeah, maybe it’s not my place to worry about.’
In the mansion, she had no right to intervene in Asher’s education. Although she was known as Asher’s ‘sister-like figure,’ she wasn’t his biological sister either. In reality, it has only been about a month since she met the child. She knew that insisting otherwise would only make her look foolish.
But.
‘Anyone would get angry if they saw the child struggling like that!’
