Chapter 35.2
After swallowing a dry gulp, she cautiously asked.
“What would you do if a customer said the coffee was too bitter?”
“I’ll make it again so that it contains as little bitterness as possible.”
“What if they want to add sugar?”
“Then, I’ll give them sugar.”
“Why? People here don’t usually add sugar to their coffee.”
“But if the customer wants it, isn’t it the barista’s duty to accommodate that?”
April smiled brightly.
As she had sensed at the cafe, his values aligned very well with hers. The next moment, she stood up and extended her hand to Edmund. He looked momentarily taken aback before quickly rising to his feet and taking her hand.
“I look forward to your kind cooperation.”
“Um, I…”
“That’s right.”
She smiled brightly.
“You pass.”

That night, April visited Claude’s office with more excitement than ever.
‘Everything is falling into place.‘
A prosperous three-story cafe had sprung up on the bustling Beris Street, and the necessary key personnel had been hired. Additionally, arrangements had been made to purchase high-quality flour from Sophia’s and beans from Edmund’s. Although there was still a lot of work to be done, such as hiring more staff and developing the menu, April felt light-hearted, as if she had unloaded a heavy burden.
Claude asked as he was organizing his documents as if he sensed her mood.
“Did something good happen?”
April, who was already quite excited, didn’t pay attention to the fact that he seemed to know her schedule and enthusiastically shouted.
“Yes!”
She answered cheerfully as she placed the coffee cup on the tea table.
“Preparations for the cafe are going well.”
“That’s a good thing.”
“It’s all thanks to the Duke.”
Claude didn’t respond to her answer but rose from his seat and sat down at the tea table. April followed his gesture and sat down across from him.
Now, it had become routine for her to accompany him while he drank his coffee.
Nonetheless, calling it ‘someone to talk to’ was a bit ambiguous. Since their private conversation, she merely kept her seat, and there hadn’t been much conversation between them. Claude was naturally quiet, and April didn’t bother to initiate conversation either.
But today was different. She was so excited about working with Edmund that she chatted away excitedly.
“Oh, by the way, I hired a barista too.”
“That’s good.”
“Right? I think so, too. Edmund and I have the same values, and I think we’ll be able to run the cafe well together.”
“Edmund?”
Claude, who had been listening quietly, reacted to that name.
“Isn’t Edmund a man?”
There was a hint of displeasure in the voice.
April, who didn’t notice that, responded without much thought.
“Yes, that’s right. You might have seen him at the cafe last time. Lord Edmund Hallion. He’s the one who was making hand-drip coffee…”
Then, realizing something strange, she quickly asked.
“But why does it matter here whether Lord Edmund is a man?”
Claude tightly clenched his jaw. Instead of asking again, April tried to deduce his thoughts in her own way.
‘Now that I think about it, Sophia was discriminated against just because she’s a woman.’
Was Claude also simply looking at Edmund through the lens of gender?
Her eyes narrowed involuntarily as she looked at Claude.
“Surely, you don’t judge people based on their gender, either, do you?”
“….”
His silence sounded almost affirmative.
April, without realizing it, placed her hand on her waist and lectured him in a low voice. It was an attitude as if she was scolding Asher.
“You can’t do that. Do you know how much discrimination Sophia has faced just because she’s a woman?”
When she thought of Sophia crying bitterly while holding a ruined cake, she became angry at Claude for no reason.
“….”
“Why aren’t you answering? Are you really discriminating against Lord Edmund just because he’s a man?”
“It seems you need to realize who the person in front of you is.”
It was true. Despite treating him casually, the person in front of her was Claude Winterville, whom everyone feared. She even trembled when she first saw him, shielding Asher. But since when did she feel more comfortable with Claude?
There wasn’t a specific reason. She just became convinced that he wouldn’t harm her.
‘Perhaps…’
It might have been since the day when Claude looked flustered after seeing Asher sick, or perhaps it was when he asked about her personal life. Looking at him now, he may sound stern at first, but he didn’t look displeased at all.
‘Maybe Sir Lloyd was right. Claude may really be soft towards me and Asher.’
With that thought, April casually joked.
“So, are you going to kill me for being insolent?”
“Ha, you really have no fear.”
“Anyway! Discrimination is not okay!”
“I’m not discriminating. Since he was chosen by you, he must be competent.”
“Then, why is it a problem that he’s a man?”
“….”
