Chapter 34.2
‘But I don’t know why it’s taken for granted in the empire, and they don’t add sugar.’
April voiced her confusion with a puzzled tone.
“But Lord Hallion said he could do it.”
“It seems Hallion is still inexperienced and may have misinformed you. I apologize on his behalf.”
“So, I can’t add sugar?”
“I’m sorry, but that’s correct.”
“Hah…”
April didn’t hide her displeasure. In truth, she could do without the sugar.
“But this isn’t right.”
She didn’t want to say, ‘The customer is king.’ Nevertheless, coffee was a matter of personal taste, and whether to add sugar or not was the drinker’s prerogative. To say that not adding sugar was the ‘correct way to taste coffee’ was absurd. Still, to not be able to add sugar at all… What kind of stubbornness was this?
However, not wanting to cause a scene, she simply nodded obediently.
“All right. Then, please prepare it that way.”
And so, a little while later, Edmund eventually brought the café au lait without sugar. His expression as he set the coffee cup in front of her wasn’t good.
“I’m sorry, Young Lady. The manager is quite strict.”
“It can’t be helped.”
She understood him perfectly. After all, even a barista was ultimately an employee. It was only natural to obey the orders from above.
But it was disappointing.
‘To have a barista who loves coffee and knows how to serve customers. I really like that. If only he weren’t a staff here, I would’ve hired him.’
After Edmund left, April pondered for a moment while sipping her café au lait.
“I… I’ll be back in a moment.”
After a few minutes of contemplation, she went outside to find Edmund. He was in a hidden corner with the manager, out of sight of the customers.
“Are you really going to do this?”
April hid herself from the angry tone of the manager’s voice.
“I’ve told you not to add sugar to the coffee, so why do you keep insisting on adding sugar?”
“But, Manager. If we can put sugar into black tea, why can’t we add sugar in the coffee?”
“Coffee and tea are different, aren’t they? Why are you talking about tea now?”
“And if the customer wants to drink it that way, isn’t it right to serve it that way?”
April agreed with Edmund’s words.
‘Yeah, that’s right. Keep going, fight and win.’
However, the manager’s following words were shocking.
“If you’re going to be like that, maybe you should quit.”
“….”
Ha. As expected, the superior always won. Could a mere employee win?
As she thought, April shook her head slightly, thinking that Edmund would bend his beliefs, but his response was more surprising than the manager’s words.
“Yes, I’ll quit.”
“Yeah, you thought well… Wait, what did you say?”
“I’ll work until the end of the day and then quit.”
“A-Are you out of your mind?”
“No. I’ve never been more certain.”
There was no answer from the manager for a moment, as if he truly didn’t expect Edmund would quit. He took a deep breath and spoke.
“Let’s talk about this later.”
As he walked out, he soon found April and widened his eyes before bowing his head in surprise.
“Why are you here…”
“Oh, I was just looking for the powder room for a moment…”
“It’s over there. Let me guide you.”
“No, I’ll go by myself. You seem busy and I’m fine, so please carry on with your work.”
Still, it seemed as though he couldn’t just let her go alone and called Edmund.
“Edmund, please guide the Young Lady.”
Despite hearing something unpleasant, Edmund smiled without showing any signs of reluctance.
“Yes, understood.”
While heading to the powder room, or rather, the restroom, April glanced at Edmund’s face and opened her mouth.
“I agree with Lord Hallion’s opinion.”
“…Yes?”
“I didn’t mean to eavesdrop, but I happened to overhear the two of you talking.”
It was a lie. It was true that she was eavesdropping.
“So what if you add sugar to coffee? Coffee with sugar not only tastes good but also gets positive reactions.”
In fact, when she opened the cafe at the Saran’s estate, people who drank the lattes with syrup were very happy. No, they weren’t just satisfied—people in the village who hadn’t been exposed to coffee before actually preferred coffee with syrup.
“So, what I mean is…”
April smiled brightly and reached out her hand to him.
“Do you have any thoughts about working with me?”
Edmund’s face, which had been smiling, distorted slightly. He blinked with a look of confusion as if he didn’t understand what she was saying.
“What do you mean… working together?”
“I’m planning to open a cafe soon with investment from the Duke of Winterville. I needed a barista anyway. So, if you’re thinking of quitting here, how about working with me?”
