Chapter 23.2
Claude muttered as he watched April organizing the glasses.
“You readily accepted my proposal. Do you have no family?”
“Fa…mily?”
Even though it felt like her breath was momentarily taken away, she was able to answer the question almost immediately.
“I don’t have any.”
Neither Yoon Min-ah nor April had any family. Strictly speaking, April had one two months ago, but not anymore. Despite the somewhat melancholy story, Claude didn’t show any particular sympathy, which was usually accompanied when people brought up such topics.
‘Perhaps he doesn’t show much emotion about it because he doesn’t have any family either.’
His parents had died a few years ago, and his only sibling, Leonard Winterville, had passed away a year ago. He had been alone without family until a few days ago when he found his nephew, Asher.
‘I don’t really want to feel a sense of kinship in a place like this, but for some reason, Claude looks similar to me.’
At the sight of April inadvertently smiling self-deprecating, he opened his mouth again.
“Why are you smiling like that?”
“Just because.”
She couldn’t bring herself to say, ‘It’s because you don’t have a family like me,’ so she kept her mouth shut.
“So, when did you start running the cafe?”
“Do you need to know that?”
“At the very least, I should know about the experience of the person who makes coffee for me, shouldn’t I?”
“Ah, I suppose that makes sense..”
April nodded, remembering that her salary was as much as five hundred gold.
“I’ve been running the cafe for a month now.”
However, it seemed that this alone was not enough of an answer, so she hastily added.
“Although I had studied coffee before that.”
It was the case for Yoon Min-ah from Korea. Well, since it wasn’t an incorrect statement, she didn’t feel guilty about it. Then, as she glanced at Claude, nodding his head gently as if he had understood, she suddenly became curious.
‘It’s strange. Didn’t he investigate me?’
If he had done a background check on her, he would have known that what she was saying now sounded a bit strange. However, Claude, who had been intolerant of lies, was not only not getting angry but remained quiet.
April asked without realizing it.
“Though haven’t you done any investigation about me?”
“Me? You? Why should I do that?”
“That’s…”
When he asked her that, she found herself at a loss for words.
‘Why would he…’
No matter how essential she might be to him, Claude knew nothing about her. So, wasn’t it natural to learn more about her? Furthermore, she was the one who provided him with something to drink. Even though it was unlikely to happen, but what if she harbored ill intentions and poisoned the coffee?
“Of course, Claude is immune to most poisons, so it should be fine, but…’
Regardless, she thought that he would have done some investigation to prevent such a situation.
“I can’t do a background check without your permission. Did I seem like the kind of person who would do that?”
Though it seemed like he was that kind of person, for some reason, she felt that answering truthfully might incur his wrath.
“No, you didn’t seem that way.”
Claude smirked at her response.
“I can tell when you’re lying.”
He didn’t seem particularly upset.
‘…Is it noticeable?’
April grumbled, fiddling with her cheek.
“It’s not a lie.”
“Let’s say that’s true, but what were you doing before that?”
It was a common question.
In order to get to know someone you didn’t know, the best way was to know what kind of life that person had lived. But this time, she had nothing to say. Just in case, she should talk about the life of ‘April Renoen’ instead of ‘Yoon Min-ah,’ but the truth was, she didn’t know much about her. Despite the fact that she had fragmented memories, even those were not complete.
So, she just glossed over it.
“I just… I just lived a normal life with my family.”
She wondered if being neglected could be considered normal. However, since there were often cases of poor relationships between parents and children in aristocratic families, she decided to consider it normal.
One of Claude’s eyebrows raised sharply.
“Didn’t you say you had no family?”
It seemed like he was getting angry at her for daring to lie to him.
April flinched, but she spoke her words clearly.
“Is there anyone in the world who doesn’t have a family from the beginning? I had a family in the past. I’m just saying I don’t have one now.”
Even Yoon Min-ah, who grew up without knowing her family, must have had a family when she was born.
Claude responded in a slightly subdued voice.
“I see.”
“Your Excellency wouldn’t do that, but just in case, I want to say that you don’t have to blame yourself for asking unnecessary questions. It’s not like my parents are dead.”
Claude’s eyebrows twitched as if they were about to rise again, but April explained before he could utter a word mixed with anger.
“I’ve been disowned.”
More accurately, she asked to be abandoned.
“Abandoned? Were you adopted?”
“Yes. I was abandoned, and that’s when I opened the cafe.”
Claude smiled a little mischievously.
“Are you sure you weren’t running away from home?”
April also laughed along.
“I’m not running away from home. And if you leave your house at this age, how could that be running away?”
“That’s right.”
“Anyway, that’s why I don’t have a family.”
“Do you know who your birth parents are?”
