Chapter 21.2
Hans’ reaction was rather lukewarm. It was because the combination of apricot jam and ganache cake seemed unfamiliar to him.
However, April interjected with a smile.
“It may be different, but I can guarantee the taste. I’ve tried it myself.”
Sophia blushed slightly, perhaps still feeling guilty about giving her the ruined cake earlier.
“If Miss April says so, I’m looking forward to it. Then, I’ll bring the plates.”
“Oh, we need whipped cream, so please bring me that too.”
“Alright.”
While Hans was getting the tableware, April asked Sophia some questions she had in mind.
“By the way, Sophia, do you have a place to stay for a while? I heard that people affiliated with the palace are provided with dormitories, but you resigned, right?”
“Ah…”
Sophia, who had been glancing around the kitchen with interest, smiled faintly.
“I’m going back to my hometown for a little while.”
“To visit your parents?”
“Yes. I’ve been busy, so I haven’t been able to go back home for a while. Anyway, it will take some time until the cafe opens, so during that time, I plan to help my parents in my hometown and develop some new recipes. My parents are wheat farmers, so I can use plenty of flour.”
“Wheat flour?”
April suddenly had a brilliant idea and grabbed Sophia’s hands eagerly.
“Is it possible for us to get the wheat flour from your place for our cafe?”
Fresh ingredients were essential. However, for April, who didn’t know much about this place, finding a reliable supplier was not easy. Nonetheless, if it were her wheat flour, it would not only be trustworthy but also a product familiar to Sophia herself as well.
Sophia rolled her eyes in thought and pondered.
“…Is it alright? My parents were worried because they had been struggling to find anyone to do business with for a while. Oh! But I’m not saying the quality is bad! I can vouch for the quality!”
“When I look at you, I can tell how much effort your parents put into farming. So, when you go back to your hometown, please send us some wheat flour.”
“Sure!”
While we were having that conversation, Hans came over with some whipped cream.
“Is this enough?”
“Yes, it’s perfect!”
At those words, he put the whipped cream into a piping bag and was about to cut the cake when Sophia quickly stopped him.
“Wait a moment! Let me cut the cake.”
Hans stepped aside without any objections.
“Okay. We should listen to the person who made it.”
The next moment, Sophia cut the cake with a well-heated cake knife. As she placed the cake on a fancy plate, Asher wiggled with excitement, eager to eat.
“I’m nervous.”
She handed out cakes to everyone with a nervous look on her face.
“It should turn out well.”
Seeing that, April comforted her.
“What we had earlier was also delicious, so I’m sure this one will be tasty as well.”
The first one to taste it was Asher. The child brought his nose close to the cake, sniffed, and then cautiously took a bite before his eyes widened.
“…Wow. It feels like a rabbit is hopping around inside my mouth!”
Uttering so, Asher made rabbit ears with his hands and jumped in place a couple of times.
“Hmm…”
Sophia paused slightly and wrinkled the bridge of her nose.
“What does it taste like when a rabbit hops around?”
“It means it’s delicious.”
April translated, and Asher nodded in agreement.
“That’s right! It’s the tastiest cake I’ve ever had!”
This time, he took a full bite with enthusiasm.
Then, it was followed by an exclamation from Hans as he took a bite of cake.
“Oh, it’s a new flavor. It’s definitely different from the traditional ganache cake. In particular, this whipped cream makes a moist cake that can be a bit dry otherwise.”
He set down his plate and bowed.
“I apologize for doubting you, Miss Sacher.”
“No, it’s okay! Actually, even the imperial head chef told me to throw it away because it was an ordinary ganache cake.”
Hans was furious.
“What are they talking about?! Ha, when you say the current imperial head chef, you must be referring to Matthew.”
“Ah, that’s right. How do you know?”
“We were classmates at the academy. That arrogant guy entered the imperial kitchen and became even more arrogant. If he says such things again, please tell me. A guy with less skill than me shouldn’t be flaunting his arrogance! I’ll make sure to knock that arrogance down.”
April made a joke.
“Hmm, hmm. Mr. Hans, you also said it wasn’t anything special earlier, right?”
Hans’s face turned as red as a tomato.
“Of course, I did say it was just an ordinary cake, but I never said to throw it away! Didn’t I even taste it?”
“Hahaha.”
Sophia laughed out loud. Her expression seemed relieved.
“That’s right. At least the chef didn’t discriminate against me because I’m a woman. Honestly, I was worried you wouldn’t let me use the kitchen just because I’m a woman.”
“Of course not. Where does gender come into cooking? It’s all about skill. In fact, I’d want to hire you, but since Miss April has already hired Miss Sacher, I can’t do that. It’s such a shame.”
“Just hearing you say that is appreciated.”
“Thank you just for saying that.”
