Chapter 14.2
“Before that, I have a condition. I really will only make coffee… that’s what you meant, right? You can’t suddenly ask for something else!”
Saying so, April bent her arm in an X-shape, covering her body as she stole a glance at Claude. Although she had been tempted by the money and agreed hastily, she was now starting to feel scared belatedly as the realization sank in.
Even so, the thought of earning six hundred gold just by working for a year, which would amount to six thousand million won when converted to Korean currency, was difficult to ignore. While Claude Winterville was known to be wealthy enough to build a castle with gold coins, this offer seemed excessively generous.
“I don’t know what you’re imagining with that little head of yours, but that’s right. Literally just making coffee.”
“Please document that clearly in writing.”
“All right, I’ll do it promptly.”
At that moment, Asher, who had still been hiding in the kitchen, popped out.
“Me, too!”
He straightened his back confidently and stared directly into Claude’s eyes.
“I’ll go with sister, too!”
It was a shocking declaration.
Taken aback, April’s eyes widened in surprise. Claude, on the other hand, asked with an expressionless face. He seemed devoid of any emotions.
“Is that so?”
“Yes!”
“And what about your aunt?”
“It’s better if I’m not with her.”
As he said with a sullen expression, the child’s shoulder dropped.
“And I want to find my family, too.”
“Alright. I’ll make sure you won’t regret it, kid.”
At those words, Asher pursed his lips and grumbled.
“It’s Asher.”
Eventually, a smile was softly painted on his face as he ruffled the child’s hair.
“I see, Asher.”

“You can’t do this. You’re taking my nephew without my permission as his aunt!”
As expected, Sarah was furious upon hearing the news. To be honest, April was curious about what exactly made her angry.
‘She was the one who said it’d be better if he weren’t there.’
In her point of view, Sarah had the least sense of responsibility, but the only reason she took care of Asher was that he had no other relatives besides her. In other words, if there were other people to take care of him, she wouldn’t have bothered to do so. Her sense of responsibility only extended that far—she couldn’t coldly turn away her nephew, who had nowhere else to go, but she couldn’t raise him responsibly either.
Naturally, when Claude appeared, saying he would take Asher, she thought she would finally send the child off.
So, why was she now talking about permission…?
‘…Somehow, this scene feels familiar.’
As expected, she acted just as April had anticipated.
“I’ve been taking care of this child alone for three years. I couldn’t remarry because of my family, and do you know how hard I worked to take care of him?”
“Lloyd.”
Without saying anything, Claude gestured to Lloyd, who handed a bag he had prepared to Sarah. Each time the bag moved, the sound of coins jingled.
As Sarah looked inside, she nodded her head toward Claude.
“Thank you, Your Grace.”
“There should be no more reason for you to appear in front of Asher in the future.”
“But…”
“What I’m saying is that I shouldn’t be seeing you grabbing the child’s ankle later, claiming that you have Ahser’s blood.”
Sarah hesitated as the look in her eyes as she gazed at Asher was quite ambiguous. It was difficult to tell if she was feeling regretful or relieved. April couldn’t tell whether she was disappointed that she couldn’t follow her nephew or if she was sad to see him leave.
After a moment of contemplation, Sarah averted her gaze from Asher.
“I understand. Instead, I entrust Asher to you.”
Claude let out a sneer.
“Asher isn’t only your nephew but also mine. Do you really think that Claude Winterville would neglect his nephew like someone else would?”
“N-no, I misspoke.”
Sarah, who lowered her head once again, threw a final remark towards the child.
“Go and live well. You’re a duke’s nephew, so you’ll have a much better life than here.”
Finishing her words, she turned away without a hint of regret. As Asher watched Sarah walk away, he soon shifted his gaze towards Claude.
“Excuse me…”
“What is it?”
Seeing the child pursing his lips without saying anything, Claude urged him impatiently.
“The people of Winterville don’t need to worry about anyone’s opinion. Tell me.”
“May I… call you uncle?”
As Asher lowered his head deeply after he asked that, Claude, with his large hand, patted the back of the child’s head.
“Of course, kid.”
“It’s Asher.”
“Yes, Asher.”
April stifled a smile as she looked at the two of them.
‘Surprisingly, they seem to get along well as uncle and nephew.’
In the original novel that she read, the relationship between the two wasn’t particularly good. Claude didn’t have any special affection for family, and Asher wasn’t exactly a warm and affectionate nephew either.
But perhaps, the original story had changed.
It seemed like the two of them would make a fairly decent family, even if they didn’t become extremely close.
