Seeing his siblings made Helios feel slightly better, and he chuckled softly.
“Well done.”
Patting his younger siblings’ heads, he glanced around to make sure Jean and Araella, along with his other placed guards, were keeping Sera safe.
Exchanging a reassuring glance, he sighed inwardly, relieved only he could perceive.
“Did Oppa also come to dance with Sera?”
Knowing his siblings’ intentions, Helios gently hugged Rosé and stood up.
“You know me well.”
Ignoring everyone around them, Helios kissed Sera’s hand.
Sera looked at him, pleased yet embarrassed, and lowered her voice.
“Your Majesty, perhaps such actions here…”
“With masks and similar attire, no one will recognize us. And you look beautiful today, Sera.”
Understanding her concerns, Helios quickly appeased her.
Thankfully, it seemed effective, as Sera blushed and whispered back.
“But Your Majesty, you are more splendid.”
“Nonsense. You’re the more beautiful one.”
“You’re too generous with your praise, Your Majesty.”
Helios gently lifted the veil to meet Sera’s eyes.
Her long black hair cascading to her waist and her figure wrapped in a contrasting white dress were beyond beautiful.
“You’re dazzling.”
“Your Majesty, you always overpraise me. You’re the one who’s truly dazzling.”
“I just wore what was given, but do you like it?”
“If it’s something Your Majesty chooses, I like everything.”
Helios smiled, his eyes curving as he held her hand.
No one paid them any mind today, hidden as they were beneath their masks.
“May I have this dance?”
At his gentle offer, Sera nodded briskly.
Helios led her to the dance floor, gracefully moving to the center of the hall.
Watching the two of them head to dance, Ferre was the first to speak among the three.
“Rosé. I’m happy because Helios Hyung and Sera love each other, but sometimes it feels weird.”
“Weird?”
Rosé tilted her head to the side, puzzled by what she heard.
“I suddenly feel kinda shy. Every time I secretly listen to Helios Hyung and Sera talking, my hands and feet start to feel all tingly.”
Ferre was serious.
Beside him, Rosé, about to say ‘You’ve seen Mom and Dad too. Why fuss over it?’, was interrupted when Araella, who was also left behind, murmured.
“It’s like feeling your hands and feet disappear. Sometimes when I see the two of them, I feel so cringy it’s like I’m losing my limbs.”
Rosé and Ferre’s eyes turned sharply towards Araella.
* * *
Her body swayed to the soft melody of the waltz.
Forgetting to glance around, wary of being caught dancing, Sera completely surrendered to the dance with him.
The first time they danced, curious gazes and whispering voices were incessant, but today they were just another ordinary couple, indistinguishable from the rest.
“Your Majesty.”
Within the whirl of dance steps, Sera softly called out to Helios.
The purple eyes visible beneath the mask looked down at her.
“No. Heli.”
“Right. Heli.”
Quickly correcting the familiar form of address out of habit, Sera whispered his name.
Just gazing at the beautiful Helios, as melodious as the song, made her heart flutter.
“Why are you smiling like that?”
“Um… Just feeling comfortable and happy.”
“Me too.”
The corners of Helios’s mouth briefly curved upwards. Sera, catching a glimpse of his eyes beneath the mask, smiled faintly.
Led by Helios’s hand, Sera took slow steps forward.
Flowing like water, they turned gracefully and embraced again. Helios, with eyes as deep and calm as the midnight sea, asked.
“Have you thought about it?”
“Thought about what?”
“The proposal I made last time.”
“The proposal about entering the palace?”
As Sera asked back, Helios quietly nodded.
“Do I need to decide quickly?”
“Not necessarily… but I’m eager to hear your answer—perhaps a positive answer.”
Sera calmly gazed at Helios, and chuckled a bit at his uncharacteristic impatience.
Expecting a similar laugh, she watched him, but when no answer came, Sera stopped smiling.
“Heli?”
His gaze seemed preoccupied, serious.
“No, it’s just…”
Helios swallowed his words with a quiet laugh.
The music stopped before he could voice his concern, and their dancing feet drifted apart.
That’s when it happened.
“What’s going on suddenly!”
“What’s happening?”
As if a fuse had blown, the splendidly lit palace was suddenly engulfed in darkness.
People murmured in the pitch-black darkness, unable to grasp the situation.
“Sera? Are you there? Stay right there…!”
In the dimly lit darkness, Helios reached out towards Sera.
Sensing him approaching, Sera reached out her hand towards Helios.
Her eyes, not yet adjusted to the dark, struggled to see ahead, but as if recognizing her gesture, Sera’s wrist was grasped.
“Heli? Your Majesty?”
Sera barely made out the figure with the tips of her fingers.
Just as she felt reassured thinking it was Helios, sharp screams erupted from all around.
That’s when everything turned red before her eyes.
“Fire!”
“Ahh!”
Screams accompanied the outbreak of bright red flames everywhere.
