Chapter 37.2
“Ah, so that’s why Count Eloisa said that.”
“What did he say?”
“When I asked him not to interfere in your affairs anymore, he told me that since you’re not his daughter anyway, such a thing wouldn’t happen.”
“My father believes that my mother was unfaithful.”
Cassel furrowed his brow at her words.
“He thought all the people my mother met when she was working as the leader of the Hyllan association were unfaithful men. No matter how many times she denied it, he didn’t believe her. When she told him that they were in business, he cut her off and accused her of lying.”
Leilia narrowed her eyes.
“My mother said the happiest time in her life was when she met my father and received his love. She wished that moment could come back, but she was so held back by her memories that she could never let go of him.”
As the wind blew gently, flowers fell.
The descending flowers seemed to be reflecting her mother’s tears.
“So I guess that’s why they did a paternity test when I was born, even though he didn’t believe her when the results came back.”
And… her mother despaired.
She lived a thoroughly shattered life in darkness.
“I felt sorry for my mom, who didn’t recover. Eventually, she succumbed to mental illness and passed away early.”
As her words trailed off, Cassel silently moved Leilia into the shade before he folded the parasol she held and stepped closer.
Even as he drew close, she didn’t step back.
“My mother left me formal property and a will.”
“What is it?”
“If my father doesn’t hand down the inheritance to me, then I should just give up on him. That’s the only way to not die like she did.”
Leilia spoke calmly.
“I gave up everything when I saw that my father was so greedy for the inheritance that he managed it for my younger sister instead of letting me get married.”
She just smiled.
Seeing that, Cassel pulled her into his embrace and whispered.
“Have you ever cried?”
Leilia shook her head at his earnest words.
“No.”
“I see.”
As he stroked her hair, strangely, a surge of emotion rose in her heart.
“ Thank you for your hard work.”
His tender words made her feel like she wanted to lean into them.
“I like it when Cassel is kind to me. I’m weak to that kind of thing.”
“I guess I should treat you more kindly.”
“It’s good enough as it is.”
If he came any closer, she might not be able to handle it. She didn’t know if her heart would burst forth and even ask for his love. If that happened, what kind of expression would he make? Would he reject her by saying that he already has someone in his heart?
Leilia narrowed her eyes.
She thought of her mother.
“It’s okay to cry.”
At his words, a tear trickled down her cheek. The sudden rush of emotion made her cry.
“Cassel is a kind husband.”
While watching her mother’s life, she thought that even if she didn’t love, she wouldn’t resort to begging even if she did fall in love.
…But could she really do that?
Cassel’s embrace was warm.
Would she be able to endure it if he changed his mind later and treated her coldly? Or would she, like her mother, reminisce about happy memories with him, even if they were reminiscent of her? Would she live clinging to hope in a hopeless future, thinking if that day would ever come again?
“Don’t change.”
That was all she could say to him.
Cassel, who had been silently listening to her, had a serious expression. In the deserted park, the wind was steady. He took her hand and led her back to the carriage.
As they entered, he swept her into his arms.
“Say again what you said earlier.”
“Please don’t change.”
“I thought so.”
He smiled leisurely and captured her lips. He nibbled on her lips one by one, slipping his warmth between her parted lips. Tenaciously, like a snake, he devoured her until she was gasping for breath.
After the kiss ended, he whispered softly.
“Look at me more.”
She had always been looking at him.
He kissed her earlobe again.
“I regret the current me and hope to change.”
He let out his breath.
“ I feel like I want to possess you so much that I could die.”
“Cassel.”
“We’re not doing it because Leilia doesn’t want to do it in a place like this.”
He clenched his fists.
“I’ll do anything you want me to do. So don’t worry.”
Saying so, he held her cheeks and whispered.
“It makes me feel strange to see that Leilia is afraid of me changing who I am, but I want to think positively.”
He was smiling.
“Isn’t it because of how good I am?”
Leilia nodded at his straightforward words. Her cheeks were so hot like they were burning.
Did he notice her feelings?
But even if he did, there was nothing she couldn’t help it.
