Chapter 24.2
“You’ve dried your hair.”
“My heart was pounding in my chest, and I felt like I was going to explode if I didn’t do something while I waited.”
She smiled sweetly at his affectionate words.
“Come here.”
“I think that’s what I have to say.”
He mumbled as if he hadn’t thought of her words. The lighting was bright yellow as the magic light illuminated the room. Beneath the chandelier, the two stood facing each other.
Feeling the tension in the air, Leilia opened her mouth first.
“Would you like a glass of wine?”
Her voice filled the room softly. Cassel silently gazed at her for a moment before nodding his head.
“I’m nervous, too, so I think I need to drink something.”
He accepted her offer.
After he took a seat on the couch first, she brought the wine and glasses and sat across from him. Then, without a word, Cassel got up and moved to the seat next to her.
“Cassel?”
“A married couple is supposed to be together.”
His words made her face flush slightly. Despite the fact that she wanted to say that saying things like that was unfair, the words stayed on the tip of her tongue.
“I’ll pour the wine.”
She unscrewed the bottle and poured wine into the glasses.
As he watched her doing this, he soon took the glass she held out to him, his eyes lingering on the wine as if he were slowly appreciating it. After her glass was filled as well, the two of them raised their glasses and toasted.
“For my wife and I.”
He spoke briefly. Leilia hesitated, not knowing what to say, but then followed his lead.
“For us.”
Having him beside her made it difficult for her to adjust. The tension that quietly washed over her had caused her to drink quite a bit.
“Don’t drink so suddenly. You tend to fall asleep when you’re drunk, Leilia.”
“That’s true.”
“I can’t let you sleep like that tonight.”
He spoke in a subtly low voice.
Understanding the meaning in his tone, her cheeks involuntarily reddened. What was going through his mind when he uttered such a sentiment? Was he just saying this out of obligation?
She found herself trembling with every word of his.
As they continued to exchange drinks, the alcohol slowly took effect, and Leilia recalled what Seychelle had said to her.
“Cassel, you know…”
“Leilia.”
He checked on her condition and gently took the wine glass from her hand, placing it on the table.
‘I could drink a little more.”
When she took another sip of wine and tried to speak, he brought the wine glass closer to his side to prevent her from reaching it.
“I need some mental preparation, too.”
“What are you going to say that needs mental preparation?”
Leilia bit her lip at his words.
It had been more than half a year since the rumor about him having a mistress had surfaced, and during that time, she was worried about him sleeping with another woman. She remembered her childhood and thought about her mother’s tragic fate. Furthermore, she remembered that he didn’t love her.
Still, could she say this?
“Please tell me.”
As he said softly, his tone shook her heart.
“It’s about the mistress. It broke my heart.”
She always kept her emotions inside, so there were many pent-up emotions within her. However, alcohol brought them to the surface.
Tears silently welled up in her eyes.
“Oh, this wasn’t what I intended to say.”
She didn’t say this to criticize him. In the first place, she didn’t bring up this topic because she wanted to cry to him.
…She wanted to run away.
When Leilia tried to get up and escape, he quickly grabbed her hand.
“Come here.”
“But…”
“Why are you crying over there?”
After he sat her down beside him, Cassel gently wiped away her tears with his hand silently.
“Cry next to me.”
His tender voice brought forth more tears. This time, it wasn’t the alcohol but the warmth of his affection that melted the emotions she held within.
“Leilia.”
He softly called her name. In the tender and intriguing tone of his voice, she closed her eyes.
And then, his lips drew closer.
The kiss began again.
However, it didn’t stop with a kiss this time. While kissing roughly, he took her into the bedroom and pushed her onto the bed.
Lying on the bed, Leilia glanced at the sparkling chandelier.
“That was a gift from Chancellor Chelias.”
“Really?”
“Yes, my wife’s room seems too shabby.”
His words were filled with bitterness.
“Now, let’s live in a splendid place. I also want you to be able to just obstinately buy beautiful dresses without having to go to the Hyllan Merchants Association.”
“Cassel.”
“I always felt bad about leaving you in this mansion. You’re Leilia, who could be living somewhere more splendid and beautiful.”
He said so and kissed her tear-stained cheek, who was unable to stop crying.
