After I Died, He Died After Me Too - Chapter 6
Chapter 3.2
Since she hadn’t imprinted on him when she was Edith, Mikhail was free. It would be better for him to be paired with someone rather than her. She was wary that she might unwittingly become obsessed with a Guide, and just that thought alone was dreadful as it was. She didn’t want to be consumed by power without reason since she had watched that happen to others more than anyone else.
Yet, the emptiness she felt when a string that connected her to him was severed remained vivid.
She had always stayed calm and didn’t think she would go berserk.
She simply thought it wouldn’t end as she witnessed the endless stream of creatures pouring forth and took action. In truth, she thought she wanted to stop. She loathed the inevitable sacrifice of having to fight against endless creatures and how long she’d be fighting the endless creatures.
She didn’t mind dying if it meant everything could end because of her.
Eventually, Edith mustered her power to its fullest and shielded. Perhaps she was exerting her power without receiving guiding from Mikhail, but she ended up rampaging nonetheless.
There was no regret.
She glanced at the clock and headed downstairs. Following her father’s rule that the whole family should eat together whenever possible, she headed to the dining room at the same time every day.
“You’re late again today. Why do you always come down late to eat when you’re just at home?”
“Brother, stop nagging me. Who was the one who said I’ll gain weight if I eat every meal?”
“Did I say that?”
“Then, who else could it be?”
Bianca sat down with an uninterested expression on her face as food was placed on the table one by one. She tilted her head to the side at the absence of her father, who was always present without fail.
“Mother, isn’t father joining us?”
Asilian asked his mother, puzzled.
“He had to leave because of an urgent matter.”
Bianca and Asilian shrugged at each other in response to the unusual situation. Perhaps because their father was absent, their mother’s expression seemed somewhat tense.
“Bianca, it seems like we have to go to the banquet.”
“Have we received an invitation?”
Since the humble Astri family had never produced a proper Guide or Esper, other families had no interest in them. Even Bianca, who was of marriageable age, was naturally shunned in social circles because she had no abilities.
Though they suddenly received an invitation?
“Where did it come from?”
“Listen, and don’t be surprised.”
Given their family’s lack of interest in socializing, to the extent that there weren’t even any scandals about them in the capital, so there was nothing surprising. The only gossip about the Astri family was about Bianca’s brother, Asilian, whose appearance occasionally sparked the interest of women.
“An invitation came from the imperial family.”
“…From the imperial family?”
Bianca’s expression cracked at her mother’s words.
“I was so surprised that I checked the invitation several times.”
“Are they inviting our family to the banquet?”
“Yes. It came a bit suddenly, but it’s a good opportunity, isn’t it?”
Bianca set down her fork. It was difficult to discern the imperial family’s intentions in inviting her despite her lack of ability.
“Don’t you have any guesses as to why?”
Until now, the Crown Prince had never sent out an invitation since he came of age. And yet, they received an invitation to a banquet for his twenty-fifth birthday this year.
Bianca felt uneasy for some reason.
“The imperial family has never sent an invitation to our family before, and it’s not like there’s been any changes in our family in the meantime.”
“It seems even Father doesn’t understand the situation either.”
The banquet held to celebrate the Crown Prince’s birthday was the grandest in the Asteria Empire. He was the highest-ranked S-class Esper within the empire.
Dexter de Douglas. The only son of Emperor Douglas.
While it was heard that he still didn’t have a matched Guide, it was irrelevant to the Astri family, who had no connection with Guides.
“That’s strange.”
“Don’t overthink it. Perhaps they simply sent invitations to all the nobility in the capital? Even families that have never received one before are getting invitations this time.”
“Yeah, I agree with Mother. You worry too much.”
“I guess Brother is particularly unconcerned.”
Bianca sighed. In reality, she was someone who tended to worry excessively.
“I don’t even have a dress prepared. Is that okay?”
“There’s nothing we can do about it. Since it’s difficult to decline, we’ll just have to go wear ready-made clothes.”
Bianca nodded at her mother’s words.
