When the Villainess Died, the Male Lead Went Crazy - Chapter 146.1
“Are you crazy?”
Lewarren thought he had made a good choice in speaking just before the tea was served. After all, he had once been sprayed with tea when Anais had gotten flustered while they were drinking together.
“I’m not crazy.”
“Then why now? I don’t need anything like that.”
“Why don’t you need it? It looks like Kylian Cypnos is planning to take a consort soon.”
Lewarren fell silent as the maid placed the teacups and teapot down. Anais also paused for a moment. She knew that even though the eyes and ears of the palace were on her side, there was always the possibility that something might be reported to Kylian.
The tea was poured into two delicate cups, and Anais’s cup was filled with milk in a small cup.
Anais stirred it with the teaspoon beside her. The once-clear tea soon became murky. She added about four sugar cubes to it and stirred again. Seeing her sweet habit of drinking tea, Lewarren couldn’t help but frown slightly.
“Your taste is still the same.”
“I don’t have refined tastes.”
Anais said this and put the teaspoon down, then took the cup in her hands. But since the tea was still too hot, she didn’t drink immediately.
Anais thought that Lewarren’s habit of sipping hot tea slowly, letting it cool, was one of his picky traits, a way of tormenting his subordinates.
“Why do you want to become my consort?”
“Because I liked you before.”
“What?”
Anais stared at him, trying to gauge whether he was lying.
“I followed you because I admired you, but there were times when that admiration turned into love.”
“You…”
“Of course, not anymore.”
“What does that mean?”
“Goddess Roseraine wants to connect the temple with the imperial family.”
Lewarren looked at his tea with an indifferent expression. Then, as if savoring the aroma, he lifted the cup, moving his hand just slightly.
“I don’t love you in that way anymore, and you could never love me in that way either. Does that answer your question?”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about. Why do you always speak in your own way, on your own terms? It’s impossible to understand!”
“I shouldn’t get too close to Zisis.”
“What?”
Lewarren thought that the change in his tone was due to Zisis. Zisis had always been someone who could easily understand and accept such remarks.
“Here we go again, one more time.”
Lewarren tried to explain as kindly as possible,
“Goddess Roseraine wants me to remain as her servant. I also want that. But if the temple law changes this time, some of the High Priests might marry to set an example.”
“So you’re saying that since I’ll never see you romantically, you want to marry me and make sure I never marry anyone else?”
“Yes.”
Anais felt odd when he said that so casually. It felt like he was throwing away an important part of his life without hesitation.
Moreover, what he was willing to discard was something very important to Anais. Her love for Kylian was the most precious thing to her.
“Can you really live like that?”
“It’s the vow I made when I first went to the temple. And I don’t need to love like that. I’m already overwhelmed with what I have now.”
Anais felt like Lewarren was giving up so much, and she found it hard to respond. She wanted to be the one who stopped him from making a wrong choice in life, but instead, she felt helpless.
“I’ll refuse.”
“Why?”
“I like you. I want you to be happy. You’re more than just a friend to me. But I can’t agree with you throwing away something so important in your life.”
“Even if that’s what I want?”
Anais touched her cold teacup. It had cooled down so much that it no longer felt warm. She suddenly realized that Lewarren had forgotten to drink his tea, which meant that he hadn’t said those words lightly.
“If I were to shoot myself with a gun, would you just let me?”
“……”
“I don’t need an answer. I can already tell from your silence.”
Anais had expected his silence, which made it easier for her to speak.
“If you really want to maintain a good relationship between the temple and the imperial family, let’s do this: you don’t have to officially enter the palace. Just pretend to be my lover. Stay out of the legal entanglements.”
“…Why do it like that?”
“Because someday, someone might come along who you’ll actually want to marry. And you need to get Kylian’s permission.”
Lewarren looked slightly surprised by her last comment.
“Then I’ll do as you suggest. If I take you to official events, the rumors will spread just like you want.”
“If that’s the case, wouldn’t it be better to officially be involved? After all, rumors are going to spread anyway.”
“No, it’s not the same. If we just stayed close, you could defend it if you ever meet someone in the future, but if we do it your way, you won’t even be able to make an excuse.”
“Whoever I meet, Goddess Roseraine won’t let it go unnoticed.”
“The goddess is quite fickle. She’s probably anxious now because the rules among the gods have changed. And how can you be sure someone will come along who would want to give up their position in the temple?”
