When the Villainess Died, the Male Lead Went Crazy - Chapter 145.1
“What does that mean?”
At Anais’s question, the guards who had been dragging Lionel stopped and gave him a cold glance before releasing him. As soon as his bound arms were freed, Lionel immediately approached Anais.
“I heard that His Majesty plans to take a priest as a consort this time. I suspect the title of Empress may be given away.”
“How do you know that?”
“Of course, I know. I’m the Tower Master. All information passes through me.”
Anais looked at him in disbelief.
She felt uneasy. It was true that she had grown distant from him after the dreams. But even in those dreams, Kylian had no interest in any woman other than her. The misunderstanding had arisen because he had failed to recognize both her and Lilith.
There was no denying that Kylian loved her. But the Empress?
“Should we find out who it is?”
“How are you going to find out?”
“Well… I heard that they are going to announce the law in the temple tomorrow. But His Majesty’s advisor came by and asked about the procedures for taking a High Priest as a consort.”
Lionel widened his eyes with a proud look, as if pleased to have been asked for useful information.
“The reason is obvious. And recently, His Majesty called for Sheryl Ivanne. Do you know who she is?”
Sheryl Ivanne was the most famous silversmith in the Cypnos Empire.
“Kylian…?”
“He’s also a man, you know. It’s not uncommon for the Emperor to take a consort.”
That was true. His father had multiple consorts, and was also famous for his debauchery with palace maids.
“Shall we find out who it is?”
Lionel looked at Anais expectantly, aware of the crumpled paper in her hand. He was certain that the place he would be sent to was the desert. He was going to build buildings in the desert and plant trees. He didn’t want to go to the frontier, but he would have to live there, drained of magic, for a while until the construction was finished. It could take months.
Moreover, as the Tower Master, he couldn’t neglect his duties at the tower, so he had to travel back and forth.
The fact that he needed to use gates was another problem, but the real issue was his depleted magic.
He lived with constant pain, as if he were someone suffering from a lack of blood. But he couldn’t refuse Anais’s orders. After all, it was true that he had tried to kill her in the past!
“No.”
“Why not?”
“If that’s Kylian’s choice, I’ll respect it.”
Anais said this, but her expression looked sad.
“Then go live well in the Ruen Desert.”
“Empress!”
“Take him away.”
Anais forced a smile and sent Lionel away. He was too valuable to be confined to just the capital. Moreover, Anais hadn’t made him suffer to the point of collapse. As wizards often became absorbed in fields of interest, if she didn’t give him tasks like this, he could hide himself away.
And when truly necessary, she would send a priest to help him recover.
Although Lionel was the Tower Master, he had never used the power he possessed for the benefit of others. Anais wanted to use his feelings of guilt to make him serve the empire.
For a while, Anais stared blankly at the door.
It was true that she had been shaken by his words, but she believed that Kylian would never take a consort and it made her feel oddly at ease.
If not, Anais could trust Kylian’s feelings for her.
* * *
“It’s been a while.”
“Lewarren!”
Anais had sent a letter asking Lewarren to come quickly when she heard he was coming.
The two of them met in the garden of the Empress’s quarters, surrounded by wisteria and hydrangeas.
It was all the result of Kylian hiring a large number of gardeners to tend the grounds. He wanted Anais to enjoy a new scenery with each season, but Anais wasn’t very familiar with flowers, so she just thought it looked pretty.
“Hey!”
“Why hit me the moment you see me?”
Anais slapped Lewarren on the shoulder.
“Do you know how long it’s been since you left your room?”
“I don’t know. A little over a year, maybe?”
“You’re insane.”
Anais genuinely cursed at him. Since the day of the coup, Lewarren hadn’t left his room. Even when she invited him to accept his accolades, he had sent Priest Zisis in his place.
“Has Zisis been crying every day because of you?”
“Yes, he cried again today.”
“Why today?”
“Because I finally left.”
Anais could almost hear Zisis’s voice in her head.
“High Priest! You can’t stay in your room like this! What if God gets angry with you?!”
“I sometimes think Zisis would make a great assistant for me.”
“Why?”
“Because I’d take care of him. He’s good at his work, listens well, and is kind. Even if I tease him, he doesn’t blame others, only himself.”
“…How do you know all of this?”
“How could I not? I’ve known him for so long.”
Lewarren had no response to Anais’s words. It was true. He had also been thinking of the words Zisis had said to him when he left the room today.
“Huwahhh! High Priest, you actually left your room…! I will do better! It’s all my fault, I’ll do better, High Priest!”
