Chapter 97.1

As if my ears were clogging up, my consciousness faded in an instant. For a moment, I could feel Raniero shaking my body, but soon, all sensation vanished. The weight of my body became infinitely lighter, and I felt like I was floating in the air.

I closed my eyes and savored the feeling of weightlessness.

My handmaidens’ hostility towards me, the fear I feel towards Raniero, and the duty I must fulfill as the Saintess of Tunia…

Even the imprisoned Cisen and Sylvia, the injured Eden, and even Seraphina all seemed irrelevant to me. A similar sense of liberation similar to the one I felt when I crossed the gates of the County of Tocino, but a hundred times more cathartic.

I burst into laughter.

Was I really dead?

I didn’t know why I died…

Dying wasn’t as big a deal as I thought it would be. Despite the fact that I thought there would be something really terrifying before death, if it were just this, I was scared for nothing. It felt like I was having a really good night’s sleep. As if I had left behind my tangled life and drifted away… and I realized that I needed this more than anything.

With my eyes closed, my mind wandered endlessly.

I felt languid and happy.

It seemed like it would be nice to stay like this forever.

In reality, I had been floating like that for quite some time, like a leaf on a lake or like a jellyfish in the distant sea. I wasn’t sure if I rested enough, but just when I thought the nerves that had been on edge were calming down a bit, someone woke me up.

“Get up.”

Although it was definitely a voice I hadn’t heard before, it felt familiar.

When I opened my eyes, I saw a face that I hadn’t seen before, yet it seemed familiar. He was an old man of similar height to me and with a straight back. His gender was unclear, and objectively speaking, he had quite a shabby appearance, with sparse white hair and clothes worn with holes here and there. Yet, no one seemed to dare to treat him disrespectfully.

It was because his face, full of deep wrinkles and gruesome scars as if he had been chiseled with the roughest of sculpting tools, carried tremendous majesty. There wasn’t the slightest trace of laughter from him. It seemed futile to expect kindness or gentleness from him.

Nevertheless, I instantly recognized him as the God of Mercy.

Mercy wasn’t the warmth swayed by the wind but a strong will that remained unshaken in any adversity.

Perhaps that was why there was a fierce storm brewing in Tunia’s face. In truth, I didn’t have a very favorable image of Tunia. It was due to the hypocritical and selfish aspects shown by the people of the Temple of Tunia. However, facing Tunia directly here made me realize he was an untouchable being, and even reverence arose within me.

The followers weren’t properly reflecting Tunia’s values.

When my thoughts reached that point, Raniero naturally came to mind.

‘I understand why he’s considered so precious.’

To deeply resonate with the god you serve and spread the doctrine properly to the world, the chosen one’s talent must be exceptional.

In the midst of this, I couldn’t even open my mouth and committed the impropriety of silently staring at Tunia. However, he didn’t reprimand me. He just repeated his words once more.

“Get up.”

I gingerly rose to my feet.

Despite there being nowhere to place my foot, I managed to stand upright safely. Well, I was lying in the air a little while ago. I could clearly ascertain that this wasn’t the material world.

With strong conviction, I asked.

“Am I dead?”

Tunia shook his head with a stern face as if he didn’t know how to smile.

“No. That would be a shame for you, wouldn’t it?”

As he walked on ahead with his back to me, I hastily followed him.

“You didn’t want to die that much, but don’t you find death sweet?”

“That’s…”

I said a little indignantly.

“Anyone who’s been through what I’ve been through would want to rest.”

Tunia nodded slowly.

“I guess so.”

I glanced around. It was a strange space, with light and darkness intertwined, constantly drawing geometric patterns, yet it felt incredibly static.

“Is this the world of the gods?”

“That’s right.”

“Why am I here?”

“Firstly, because your handmaidens poisoned you. Secondly, because the moment your soul broke free from the constraints of the flesh, I summoned you here.”

“The handmaidens… not only resent me, but they are also trying to poison me?”

“Yes.”

Tunia, who had been walking ahead with his back to me, turned his body and glared at me.

“They think you’re keeping Actilla’s vigor from reaching its full potential. So, they decided that if they eliminated you, everything would fall back into place.”

“How do you know everything like that? Is it because you’re a god and you know everything?”

“That’s right.”

“Then, your followers have nothing to worry about, right? Because their god knows everything that will happen in the future.”

Tunia showed no particular reaction to my impertinent question.

“Even if I know everything, it’s useless if my voice doesn’t reach my followers.”

I remembered an unidentified voice entering my head that had been helping me. According to Seraphina, that voice belonged to Tunia.

So, I asked hesitantly.

“Am I the Saintess of Tunia?”
