Chapter 34.1

Ellin opened her eyes on a soft bed. With a blank stare, she jolted up in surprise the next moment.

To her surprise, she was dressed.

‘…What happened?’

The next moment, she looked down at her chest. Since she was unconscious, there was no way she could have hidden the sigil on her own. Sure enough, there was the sigil of the saint. This was evidence that someone had changed her clothes.

Ellin grabbed her chest and sighed deeply.

If anyone saw this… If they found out she was the Saintess, there would be great upheaval. Her face turned pale at the thought. What should she do?

It was when she bit her lip.

At that moment, the door opened, and Melissa came in. She flinched as if she hadn’t expected Ellin to be awake.

“….”

Melissa’s face was also pale, not much different from hers. Her frightened gaze was fixed on Ellin’s chest, where the sigil of the Saintess was drawn.

“You must’ve seen it.”

When she asked calmly as she touched the area below her collarbone, Melissa nodded her head.

“How serious is the situation? Is it known outside of the imperial palace?”

She shook her head in response to the question.

“No one knows about it yet.”

“No one knows? What do you mean by that?”

Was it possible that no one knew of this? As Ellin looked at her hopefully, Melissa stumbled over her words.

“I… um. I…I saw the lady collapse yesterday afternoon… and tried to change your clothes…”

“So that’s how you found out.”

“Yes… Saint… I mean, Lady.”

“You recognize the sigil of the gods.”

“Because my mother was a devout believer. I don’t actually remember everything, but I distinctly remember it being like that—a dark green pattern…”

As Melissa uttered weakly, Ellin sighed and lowered her head.

“Melissa. Are you going to tell anyone else?”

“No, never!”

She exclaimed, almost in horror.

She was puzzled as Melissa’s petite body was trembling faintly. Rather, it was Ellin who was surprised.

“Melissa, I’m not threatening you.”

“I know. Don’t worry. I really won’t say anything…”

“If you promise, I appreciate it.”

When Ellin smiled brightly as if relieved, Melissa opened her mouth again.

“But…”

“But?”

“Saintess, if there ever comes a time when my life is at stake… could you save me?”

Ellin was relieved by Melissa’s cautious question. She agreed to make a deal on the condition that she kept the secret.

“Divine power isn’t omnipotent. Still, if Melissa were to be seriously injured, I would use my divine power in any situation, even if it means my identity as the Saintess is revealed.”

“I didn’t mean it that way, but… thank you.”

Melissa said, sounding relieved.

It was rather a relief that Melissa had found her. What would it have been like if an imperial knight, a maid or worse, Arkan had discovered her? He was so well involved in strange events like this, so it was fortunate that Melissa found her.

Ellin breathed a sigh of relief.

Although she couldn’t completely trust Melissa, in her eyes, she didn’t seem to be lying. Even if her identity were later revealed by Melissa, she would accept it willingly. It was because it was Melissa’s consideration, not her obligation.

“Ellin! Where were you yesterday?”

“I’m sorry, Your Highness. I was asleep yesterday.”

The Princess walked towards her, puffing out her cheeks as if she was upset.

As Ellin entered the room, she glanced at the handmaidens and servants. The maids were ignoring her, and the servants were doing the same. Seeing their attitude, she felt relieved instead. It seemed like Melissa hadn’t leaked any information at all like she said.

“Ellin, read this for me.”

“Alright, just a moment…”

Ellin picked up the book and began to read. Even though her reading speed was slow, her pronunciation was accurate. It was her consideration towards the stuttering Charlotte.

“Ellin. Voice, good.”

“Good?”

“Ung. It’s warm.”

The child smiled brightly and suddenly sat on her lap. Even at ten years old, Charlotte was still small due to inadequate nutrition intake.

As she watched Charlotte blindly following her around, she smiled warmly, without any ulterior motives.

“What’s this?”

“It’s a knight.”

“And this?”

“It’s a dragon.”

“What’s a dragon?”

“It’s a monster that torments people…”

Ellin said, frowning as she spoke, looking at the fairy tale book. It was because the dragon had red eyes. Even though it was an imaginary creature, what would happen if it started staring with red eyes from here?

“Shall we do some coloring?”

“Coloring? Great!”

Thankfully, Charlotte seemed to enjoy whatever she suggested. So, they spread out all the fairy tale books they had and colored the eyes of dragons, monsters, and all sorts of negative creatures in different colors. The downside was that Charlotte colored other things in various colors, too.

“Your Highness Charlotte! You shouldn’t color the face black!”

“Are there no people with black faces?”

“Yes?”

“Ellin said that dragons don’t just have red eyes.”

“Yes.”

“Then, isn’t it like this as well.”

“….”

There were certainly people with black skin. More accurately,  ‘dark’ in color.

Ellin learned a lesson from Charlotte.

‘Wow, you can learn something even like this.’

She was amazed at the idea that there was still something to learn, even in her second life.

“Well, people with dark colors certainly… no, Your Highness! There’s no such thing as green skin!”

Just as they were having fun coloring—

“Charlotte!”

—Someone suddenly burst into the room. At that moment, startled, the handmaidens and servants fled as if they were facing enemies.

When she turned her head, Ellin heard the distinctive voice of a boy going through puberty.
