“Reina. From the dawn of history and until today, there has never been a case of an epidemic or a plague before.”
The connotation behind those words was clear.
This tremendous discovery would most definitely turn the whole world upside down. And at the same time, Reina would be at the center of everyone’s focus and attention, all at once.
That’s what he’s worrying about.
‘After everything dwindles down, my role as a normal noble lady will really be over.’
Reina stared blankly at the report that’s been collated with the help of many people. It was the result of everyone’s sincere efforts, to the point that they used their own hands to dig into the soil.
That’s how desperate everyone was.
“…Ethan. If that’s something I wouldn’t be able to endure, I wouldn’t have come here in the first place.”
Ethan parted his lips slightly and looked like he was about to utter his answer. However, he soon closed his lips once more and swallowed the words that he was about to say.
Reina asked Ethan carefully.
“Is there something on your mind, Ethan? It’s alright, so please tell me.”
In his deep, dark eyes was the reflection of the woman who had become so unrecognizable to him as of late.
Ethan looked down at the woman’s hand, which had gotten blisters and calluses from conducting experiments.
“I… I just wish that you don’t have to do this anymore, Reina.”
Unexpectedly hearing such honesty from him, her eyes went wide with shock. Only then did she understand why Ethan hadn’t looked well since the morning that she visited the temple personally.
“Why do you keep going down a path that could prove to be dangerous, Reina?”
It was the sentiment of a person to wish for their beloved to walk down a flowery path even though they themself was walking down a thorny road.
“There’s going to be some nobles that won’t be happy with this discovery.”
It was a very simple principle.
Rarity would soon lead to power. And, magic was rare in this world. Thus, those who knew how to wield magic were bound to stand at the top of the hierarchy.
How could she not know that?
“Reina, I don’t know how… the nine households will react to this.”
The Liam Duchy, a household of mages whose veins flow with the blood of the gods.
The Bohr Marquisate, a household of healers who quite potently inherited the power of Chetrasiu.
The Jehardt Marquisate, a household of swordsmen who could wield mana—or, magical power—and infuse it into their swords to create aura.
The Worrell County, a household with mastery over magical power as they would use their proficiency in amplifying their five senses.
Likewise, the Venzen County, a household of archers who use magic to amplify their five senses as well.
With the exception of the Carter Duchy who were merchants, the Stymist County who were master artisans, the Penfound County who were superb chefs, and finally the Chantra Marquisate who were poison wielders…
More than half of the nine households had seized their power through magic.
However, technology was now emerging even without that magical power. It was a headache that even the power of Chetrasiu could not handle.
“I’m not sure how it will turn out, especially with the Bohrs.”
His words held weight. However, Reina still believed.
“No, Ethan. If they’re going to take a negative stance on the advancement of medicine through technology, they wouldn’t have been happy from the start with the vaccine I discovered at the Thurn Village.”
At that time, Paul’s mother and the Minister of Health, Count Leicester herself was rather pleased. And apart from that, didn’t Reina become an intern at the Ministry of Health?
“So I’m sure that they’ll welcome this good news again. I believe that they will never betray the duties and responsibilities of the nine households.”
Before the conflict with the Utta temple had transpired, Reina had a great distrust in the nine households.
Even if they were not consciously instilling the roots of evil in society, she thought that only corrupt people would ever take up leadership roles and high-ranking positions in such a broken system.
Of course, in the past, she was willing to spend the rest of her life even if it meant having to dwell in stagnant water, but… In any case, she had once doubted that those people would greatly poison the development and progress of society.
But that was her own error of judgment.
“A leader who forgets their duty shall inevitably be ousted sooner or later.”
“Though you are not the household’s successor, do not forget that you are a member of the ruling family of this domain, and just the same, you are part of the ruling class of the Empire.”
As she shed her prejudice little by little, she came to know that the nine households held more righteous values than she had originally expected.
Although she could not see any burning passion to make the world a better place, clearly, they were not neglecting their duties.
And although there was an evidently distinguished divide amongst social classes in society, they were not betraying the obligations they must uphold that came with that lofty position.
“Ethan, I believe in them. After all, it’s not worth putting human lives at stake… And I have no doubt that all nine households are fully aware of this.”
Seeing the determination in her eyes, Ethan briefly looked away into the empty air.
The red hue of the sky, created by the setting sun, was fast approaching the horizon. And as it did, its colors streamed through the windows and reached this room.
Migratory birds, whose destination was unknown, flew in groups. And as they moved further and further away, they became smaller and smaller as well.
Ethan’s eyes followed all these scenes, which heralded the end of the day. And, his lips, which were previously hardened into a straight line, also relaxed gradually.
“I understand, Reina. If it is your will, then I will follow it.”
“Thank you, Ethan.”
“However, Reina.”
Naturally intertwining his hand over hers, Ethan raised Reina’s hand and kissed her on the palm.
“Promise me that you will be careful.”
It was the same promise that had already been mentioned once before. Nevertheless, Ethan again urged her for an answer, anxious because he was still not certain about her actions.
“If anything happens to you, I’m not confident that I’ll be able to let this world remain peaceful.”
If someone else had said it, she might have laughed it off as a joke. However, since it was the magical genius of the century who said it, she felt a chill running down her spine.
As she was asked to promise, Reina nodded. There was a small smile upon her lips, as though she was trying to soothe the anxiety of the man before her.
“I understand, too, Ethan. From now on, I will consult you first before anything else, and I’ll always be careful not to head into anything that might put me in danger.”
As they finally understood each other, and with their hearts as one, perhaps this was the first covenant between these two lovers.
