‘Is this really a world where just one word from God can turn everything around?’
How could these people change their attitudes in an instant?
In the end, Reina had to look away to hide her disbelief.
Then, she saw Ethan, who looked so angry to the point of glacier-like coldness. As their eyes met, his mouth hardened and an unreadable look replaced his glare.
‘Ah… Did he notice that I’m not really a saintess?’
Of course. How could Ethan not catch on when he was someone who had received all the grace of God alone?
“Saintess.”
When the high priest called her attention, Reina was pulled out of her reverie.
“Ohh…!! Great, almighty Utta, please save us all!!”
“Aaahhh…! The almighty Utta! The almighty Utta…!!”
‘Saintess, huh.’
Right. Only one thing mattered.
Now that she had become their saintess, no one would be able to stand against her.
‘In the midst of every crisis lies either great danger or great opportunity.’
And her crisis bore fruit to an opportunity, not danger. So, now was the time to take advantage of this situation in earnest.
But before that, there was one person she would have to win over.
‘Ethan… He’s both more open-minded and less open-minded than what I had expected.’
So, she had no idea how he would react to this blatant con. But if he was looking at her with such a displeased expression, there’s a higher chance that he’d oppose the idea…
Ethan had been silent until now, but right then, he opened his lips to speak.
“Reina currently isn’t feeling well due to her excessive use of divine power. So, stop here for today and let her rest.”
Perhaps it’s because of his tone of voice, which was as cold as a snowstorm sweeping over the expanse in the smack middle of winter… Or perhaps it’s because they were genuinely worried about their ‘saintess’?
The people of the Utta religion, including the high priest, left the room—which was reserved for important people—without any qualms. When they left, Reina was finally able to relax her upper body’s posture.
Less tense now, she turned slightly and carefully examined the man who was doing something at the other side of the room. Some clattering could be heard from there.
“Um… Ethan.”
“……”
It was a small, timid voice, but he should have heard it. However, uncharacteristically enough, he didn’t answer her.
“Ethan… Can we talk?”
Instead of answering, he brought something for her on a tray. There was a stiff expression on his face.
“Drink this.”
As he handed her a cup of chamomile tea, what he uttered was a mere two-syllable sentence, and it was with a hard tone.
“You’ll feel fatigued because you used up an unexpectedly large amount of divine power.”
“…Thank you.”
She then accepted the porcelain teacup, which had emerald green patterns. As she sipped the tea, yet again, worries spread like paint over her thoughts.
‘What should I say?’
It’s not like she wanted to con them. Rather, they were the ones who misunderstood her all on their own, so why should she have to reveal the truth like this?
Should she just pretend to be a saintess first, then explain later? If someone would ever point it out, she could just make the excuse of, I couldn’t think straight back then and it felt like I was being pressured into it, so I naturally went on and pretended to be a saintess.
‘But that sounds a little… weird, right?’
Despite her busy thoughts though, her mind slowly eased as it drifted lazily along the relaxing, warm tea. And, just as her body was slowly relaxing as well, following her mood, Ethan finally spoke.
“Reina.”
She should just do it quickly, right? Like a band-aid.
Like a thief caught in the act, she flinched in surprise. And, flustered as she was, she spat out the first thing she could think of.
“Yes, it’s exactly as you think, Ethan. I’m not a saintess. But if I don’t go along with them, those people will continue to ignore my opinions. So, please, Ethan. Can’t you turn a blind eye just this once?”
She said that entire thing without a breath in between.
Ethan looked at her without answering. Thanks to this, Reina got more nervous, and she once again uttered just anything that came to mind.
“Human lives come first. But they just kept refusing to communicate with me. You saw it too, Ethan… (omitted)… There’s no other choice left right now.”
The grand and long-winded excuse finally reached its end. Even so, the person in front of her still wouldn’t answer.
In an attempt to elicit a reaction from him, she took hold of the end of his sleeve and tugged slightly.
“Ethan… You understand me, don’t you?”
“……”
“Ethan… Say something.”
His lips, which had been tightly closed as if glue had been keeping them closed until now, finally opened.
“Haa… Reina. You made a promise with me with such conviction that time.”
Promise? What promise?
Head tilted to the side and eyes , her visible confusion was enough of an answer. At this, Ethan narrowed his eyes.
But this lasted only a moment. Ethan turned away as though avoiding her gaze, perhaps because he didn’t want her to see his reaction.
With his head turned away, a small murmur could be heard.
“…really can’t lock you up anywhere.”
His voice carried a very different tone and a faint sense of desire. Surprised to hear this, Reina unknowingly clutched the blanket on her lap tightly.
She didn’t know if it was only a mere illusion, but his scent—which had felt so refreshing as of late—faintly sent shivers down her spine.
“E-Ethan…?”
Lock up? Was it such a huge crime to con people into believing that she was a saintess…?
She thought she’d just get a stern lecture, but as the situation was going down an unexpected direction, her pupils started shaking.
“Reina.”
Their eyes met again.
And in his black eyes was blatant, possessive desire.
“W-Why, what is it, Ethan…”
Receiving a look that she had never seen before, Reina faltered. She repeatedly called the name of the person in front of her.
Then, thicker than a fog that would cover the sea, a sigh left through Ethan’s lips.
“You promised not to do this again.”
“…Huh?”
As he saw the woman’s cowering shoulders, Ethan forcibly reined in his affection, which he had revealed unknowingly. He gently held the woman’s slender wrists, then her hands.
“If just one thing had gone wrong, you would have died, and I wouldn’t have been able to do anything about it.”
His voice was trembling, and it lingered in her ears.
‘…Die, he said. Who?’
“If I wasn’t around, there’s a high possibility that you wouldn’t have been able to handle the outpour of divine power. You would have disappeared from the world just like that.”
What? Disappear?
“…Who?”
“You, Reina.”
“What???”
