The Reason Why She Can’t Get Married - Chapter 4
Chapter 4
* * *
On the day of the wedding, Selena dressed in a light blue dress as the bridesmaid. She adorned her hair with a white silk ribbon, a symbol of the bridesmaid, and tied another ribbon on her wrist.
“Sis, how do I look?” Dahlia, dressed in a pure white wedding dress, asked nervously. Her complexion and freckles were covered with makeup, and she looked incredibly refreshed and beautiful.
“You look absolutely stunning, Dahlia. You look amazing.”
“Really?”
“Yes, you look great.” Selena raised her thumb, and Dahlia smiled happily. Selena couldn’t help but smile at her sister’s excited face.
Clap!
“Ow!”
“If it looks that good, you should do it too.” Selena turned her head back in surprise as her mother, Marchioness Irving, unexpectedly slapped her on the back.
“Oh, Mother! It hurts, really!”
“Do you think I slapped you to make you feel good?” Marchioness Irving snorted and slapped Selena’s back once more.
Selena jumped up from her seat, and tears welled up in her eyes.
“Oh, seriously!”
“Where did you get this temper? If you feel wronged, you should get married like Dahlia.”
“You said you wouldn’t say such things today!”
As Selena stood up defiantly, a man who looked just like her appeared behind Marchioness Irving.
“That’s right, dear. Let’s not treat Selena like this on such a special day.”
“Father!” It was none other than Marquess Irving, Selena’s father, who had arrived.
Selena’s face trembled at the sight of her ally. Initially, when she declared her single status, his reaction wasn’t much different from her mother’s. However, now that he tried his best to understand his daughter’s feelings, he sided with Selena when confronted by her mother.
“You shouldn’t be too soft on her. What are you planning to do with the territory?”
“Hehe, there are always ways, aren’t there?”
“What ways? What ways!” Marchioness Irving’s fierce palm struck her husband’s forearm, making a slapping sound. It was quite loud, but he didn’t show any signs of pain.
Instead, Selena poked her sister’s shoulder, attempting to find a reason for the hits to stop.
“We can pass it on to one of Dahlia’s children. If the firstborn could inherit the territory, why not the second or third?” Selena asked.
“Selena, you…” Marchioness Irving’s mouth trembled.
According to tradition, the firstborn child was supposed to inherit, but Selena’s audacious suggestion of passing it on to her sister’s children angered her.
“So you won’t pass it on to your own child?”
“I’m not even in a relationship. Where is my child, Mother?” Selena retorted with a wry smile, unaware that it further infuriated her mother.
“…Get out.”
“Huh?”
“Get out, just get out!” screamed Marchioness Irving, seemingly about to throw a cushion at any moment, but was held back by Dahlia and Marquess Irving.
“S-Selena. Could you, uh, go out and attend to some business? Aren’t you busy with your work?”
“Sister, see you later! Just come back 10 minutes before the meal starts!”
“Ah, got it.” As the two held their mother back, Selena quickly left the bridal waiting room. She could hear Marchioness Irving shouting something inside, but she didn’t go back in.
She knew that if she did, she would undoubtedly be beaten until her back was bruised. Placing her hand on her chest, she sighed and began walking down the corridor with light steps.
The bright spring sunlight shone through the open space. Well, the weather is nice for her sister’s wedding. Smiling faintly and enjoying the moment of relaxation, Selena checked her bag for a moment. The ribbon that was loosely tied around her wrist slipped off.
“Oops…!”
Knowing that it would be a big problem if she lost the ribbon for her hairpiece, she quickly tried to pick it up. However, at that moment, a gust of wind caught the ribbon.
The ribbon rolled onto the grassy field and floated up on a tree branch. Looking up at the strap swaying on the thin branch, Selena thought about what would happen if she gave up on it.
‘Selena, are you going to ruin your sister’s wedding by being single?’
She would receive a scolding from her mother, right?
‘Let’s just go up and get it!’
After all, she didn’t want to burden her sister’s wedding any further. Especially when she thought about Dahlia, who would jokingly say that Selena was her only bridesmaid, it made her feel even more determined.
Lifting up her dress sleeves, Selena looked around. Fortunately, there was no one passing by; it was deserted. Now’s the opportunity! She placed her bag on the ground and firmly grabbed the tree trunk.
Climbing up the tree with difficulty, Selena finally reached the branch where the ribbon was hanging. Phew, it felt rewarding, even though she used to get scolded for climbing trees when she was younger. Selena reached out her hand towards the ribbon. The white ribbon dangled just a hair’s breadth away from the tip of her long, white fingers.
‘Just a little more, just a little bit more…’
Selena extended her arm as far as she could. It was the moment when she was exerting all her strength, almost halfway leaning over the branch.
‘Got it!’
Finally, the ribbon was caught at her fingertips.
“…!”
At the same time, the branch snapped with a crack. Feeling her body suddenly lurching forward and the sensation of falling downward, Selena tightly closed her eyes.
She was risking her life just to get this stupid ribbon! She waited for the impending pain, hoping that it would just end with a fracture. However, strangely, she didn’t feel any pain. Instead, she felt something warm and firm supporting her.
‘What is this…?’
Puzzled, Selena cautiously opened her eyes. Against the backdrop of a clear sky without a single cloud, a sculpture was looking down at her.
Wait, she had just met an angel, didn’t she? Read ahead here.
