The Reason Why She Can’t Get Married - Chapter 3
Chapter 3
“Ah!” Selena gasped for breath and opened her eyes. Drenched in cold sweat, she quickly sat up and instinctively touched her neck. Her long, slender neck was unblemished, without a single fingerprint.
“What on earth… what just happened?”
She had been waiting in the bridal waiting room for her wedding ceremony when, suddenly, her husband killed her. The sensation of a large hand squeezing her throat was so vivid. Not only could she not understand why she had opened her eyes again, but she also couldn’t figure out why she was lying in her own bed wearing pajamas.
Confused, Selena raised her head abruptly as someone knocked on the door.
“Lady, are you awake?” Lucy entered the room when Selena looked up.
Thankfully, it was Lucy. Naturally, walking toward the window, Lucy noticed Selena’s pale face and stopped in surprise.
Oh, my goodness, lady. You look so pale. Are you feeling unwell?”
“Lucy, Lucy, what happened to me?”
“Huh? What do you mean?” Lucy approached and touched Selena’s forehead, raising an eyebrow.
Selena urgently grabbed Lucy’s sleeve.
“No, I was definitely waiting for my wedding to start… ”
“What wedding?” Lucy became even more bewildered than before and asked in return.
Selena replied in frustration, “Why are you acting like this, Lucy? It’s my wedding, my wedding!”
“Lady, maybe…” Lucy squinted her eyes. Selena swallowed hard.
“Are you not fully awake yet? Or are you still trapped in a dream?”
“What?”
“You’ve never had a wedding. And you had no fiancé either.”
Selena stared at Lucy with a blank expression. She couldn’t understand what Lucy, who had been with her when she chose her wedding dress, was talking about.
Why pretend not to know, Lucy?
“Lucy, are you joking with me right now?”
“Lady, it’s not me who’s joking with you. Well, you don’t have a fever. Should I call the doctor?”
Selena quickly shook her head. It wasn’t because she was feeling any physical pain right now. Rather, she was suspicious of Lucy. Why can’t she remember her wedding?
“Do you really not remember my wedding, Lucy?”
“What on earth are you talking about? You have never taken a step towards marriage until now,” Lucy responded frustratingly as Selena pounded her chest.
Equally frustrated, Lucy asked, “Who on earth did you secretly get married to?”
“I…!” Selena stuttered as she tried to say her husband’s name but stopped.
‘That bastard… who was he?’ Her memories were hazy, as if covered in fog.
She couldn’t remember her husband’s name, let alone his face.
All the memories leading up to the marriage were a mess, as if someone had blurred them. It was unclear, as if something had been erased.
‘Who did I get married to? Why did I get married?’ Selena clutched her head, trying hard to recall. But no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t remember anything.
“If we happen to meet again and get married, I’ll kill you once more.”
The chilling threat from her husband’s final words.
“I heard Lady Irving was proposed to by three people at the same time.”
“Did His Highness, Duke Ratliffe, and Tower Lord really propose to her?”
“That’s right! The three of them are awaiting her choice.”
All she remembered was receiving proposals from the three men before her marriage.
“Lady, are you really okay? This won’t do. I think I should call the doctor!” Lucy, unable to bear the sight of Selena freezing in place, stood up in concern.
As Selena casually raised her head, she noticed flowers blooming outside the window. In that moment, a realization hit her.
“Wait, Lucy. Just a moment, wait.”
Selena grabbed her maid, who was about to leave the room, and asked in a trembling voice, “How old am I now, Lucy?”
“What? Why all of a sudden…” Lucy opened her mouth, taken aback by the urgent and desperate look on Selena’s face.
“Please, tell me quickly. How old am I now?”
Lucy opened her mouth in surprise and confusion as she looked at her desperate lady.
“You are currently twenty-one years old, lady.”
Selena’s eyes widened. If she was currently twenty-one years old…
‘Could it be… have I… traveled back to before I died?’

After ten days of seclusion and deep contemplation, Selena finally admitted to herself, ‘I have returned to the past, one year ago.’
Nightmares plagued her for a while.
The moment when her face was tinged blue and she was dying in her husband’s hands kept repeating in her dreams. The threat that he would kill her again if she married him again lingered in her mind.
‘This won’t do. I can’t live like this anymore.’
Trembling with the fear of death and unable to sleep properly, Selena eventually made a drastic decision.
‘From now on, Selena Irving will live as a single woman until she dies!’
Since she couldn’t remember who her husband was, she decided to distance herself from marriage altogether.
‘I won’t get married. I won’t even date. If anyone tries to force me into a strategic marriage or anything like that, I might really die.’
Selena’s sudden declaration of being single left her parents stunned and speechless. It was natural for them to be shocked since Selena, who was supposed to carry on the family lineage, had become an advocate for singleness out of the blue.
She didn’t even want to engage in relationships. Despite the commotion from her family, Selena firmly stood her ground.
‘No, I won’t date. I won’t get married. Well, maybe I can consider dating, but…’
Recognizing that she had no proper memories of the year leading up to her marriage, Selena decided it would be best not to create any entanglements with men at all.
The only fortunate thing was that her younger sister, Dahlia, had smoothly achieved marriage, unlike Selena.
And not just with anyone, but with the heir to a good-natured, reputable, and well-off County.
“Thank you, sis. If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have met Ian,” Dahlia shyly blushed, her freckles dotting her cheeks.
For Selena, it was the second expression of gratitude after returning to the past. Seeing her sister happy, Selena also felt a sense of satisfaction and pride.
“What should I give Dahlia as a wedding present, Lucy?” Selena hummed a tune as she prepared to attend her sister’s wedding.
She had no idea who she would meet there, not even in her dreams. Read ahead here.
