The Reason Why She Can’t Get Married - Chapter 27
Chapter 27
After the dessert date with the princess, nothing else of note happened. After parting ways with Gabriella, Selena went back to her office instead of home and sat face-to-face with Lucy, her face serious.
“What do you think, Lucy?”
“You mean Sir Dixon? He seemed like a well-mannered knight for the most part, but there were some strange moments in between.”
“I see you noticed too.”
Like taking Selena’s seat without permission, or treating the maids rudely. There were a few things that bothered her, so Selena couldn’t leave work and returned to the office.
“I don’t know if it’s his true nature or a mistake made out of short-sightedness.”
“I agree. It’s hard to make an accurate judgment since it’s our first time meeting him.”
No one can know everything about a person just by seeing them once. Selena also believed that one should see a person at least five times before judging their character.
She pondered for a moment before saying, “Let’s schedule frequent appointments with the princess from now on. We need to observe Sir Dixon more closely.”
If she followed her conviction and saw him five times, she would have a clearer picture of the man that was Dominique Dixon. Then, she would also be able to confirm whether Gabriella was truly bad at judging men, as Maximilian had said.
“I, Selena, the empire’s top matchmaking expert, pledge my honor to resolve the princess’s request.”
Selena’s green eyes blazed with determination. Her reputation as the best wasn’t just because she connected people who wanted to be together. She also played a significant role in creating the best possible couples by sharply distinguishing between those who were compatible and those who weren’t. Although Selena had no experience in love, she had an uncanny ability to identify people who shouldn’t be lovers.
* * *
Selena called Gabriella out three more times under the pretense of introducing her to more dessert shops, closely observing Dominique Dixon.
What she learned, unsurprisingly, was that Dominique Dixon’s expression changed drastically when the princess wasn’t around. When Gabriella was present, he would smile charmingly as if there was no one else in the world, but when she was gone, his face would subtly contort into a frown.
Moreover, even if he was an imperial knight entrusted with the princess’s protection, he should have shown at least minimal courtesy to Selena, a noblewoman. Dominique Dixon did not. He wasn’t overtly rude, but he didn’t even maintain basic manners.
For example, when they were walking and encountered a puddle, he would only make sure Gabriella avoided it, pushing Selena, who was walking beside him, towards it. Or, when they were getting out of the carriage, he would only hold Gabriella’s hand and let go of the doorknob, causing Selena, who was following behind, to almost bump her head against the door.
Honestly, it was a lot of bad luck from Selena’s perspective.
And it wasn’t just towards Selena. He was the same way with Lucy, his fellow knights, and even strangers. It was as if he completely forgot about manners when it wasn’t Gabriella.
“Randy, do you know what I consider important when judging people?”
“What is it, ma’am?”
“How they treat the people around them. Someone who’s only nice to them might seem sweet, but they’re not really a good person.”
Selena didn’t believe in kindness or affection shown only to specific individuals. It was different from treating people within one’s circle well. It literally meant that he singled out that one person among all the people around him. That meant it was conditional kindness and affection, and there was a high chance that it was fake, artificially constructed.
“Honestly, slamming the door shut when someone is leaving is a bit much, don’t you think? It’s not like his hand would fall off if he held the door until I left.”
Selena, who almost got hurt again today by Dominique Dixon’s discriminatory consideration, poured out her frustration.
Randy diligently chimed in, pushing the teacup filled with warm herbal tea closer to Selena.
“It’s completely outrageous. It’s a behavior that could hurt someone.”
“Exactly. And today, when a store employee almost tripped over his own feet, he just stood there with his legs stretched out and didn’t move a muscle?”
“Gasp, was Sir Dixon’s leg that long…?”
“No. He’s on the taller side, but he has a long torso and short legs.”
Selena, who had gulped down the herbal tea like alcohol, took a deep breath. Inhale, exhale. Inhale, exhale. After repeating it a few times, she seemed to calm down.
“Lemon said he’d come today, right?”
“Yes, he said he’s finished with Sir Dixon’s background check. He should be here soon.”
“Good, let’s see what he has.”
Selena clenched her fists, remembering Dominique Dixon, who had been acting strangely, pretending to be a kind and well-mannered man only to Gabriella.
“Clean. No one to see separately, and no mistress.”
Usually, the first thing that came out when digging into the back of men who were usually creepy was a messy relationship with women. But Dominique Dixon is clean? It was unexpected for Selena, who had already formed a bad impression of him through four meetings.
“However, he confessed to Lady Cheshire two years ago and was rejected.”
“To Lady Cheshire?”
“Yes, she didn’t have her current fiancé at that time.”
Selena knew that too. It was she who created the current fiancé of Lady Cheshire last year.
“He also dated a princess of the Kingdom of Vurin three or four times and it fizzled out, and he briefly dated the daughter of the former Tower Lord.”
“…Why are all the women in a higher position than him?”
