The Queen Who Deserves To Be Tainted - Chapter 64.1
Within a few days, the envoys who had come to celebrate Ejnar’s birthday departed for their respective countries.
To be precise, it wasn’t ‘all’ of them. Apparently, Prince Moska had decided not to return to his homeland, instead choosing to travel across Machi, saying he had felt how charming the country was while staying at the royal palace.
Elfreda, envious of his freedom, saw off Serena, who was leaving last due to weather conditions. Before boarding the carriage, Serena approached Elfreda and whispered in her ear.
“Have you tried the medicine I gave you?”
Elfreda’s face quickly turned red. Seeing her reaction, Serena’s expression brightened.
“You did! How was it? Was it good? Fantastic? They say it feels like going to heaven!”
“No, Princess. Please, be quiet…”
“I hope it was good news. Elfreda, remember that your purpose is that, above all else.”
Looking at Serena’s reaction, Elfreda felt relieved she hadn’t confessed it was lost. After Serena, with her usual reckless energy, left, the palace returned to its usual quiet state.
However, Elfreda wasn’t free to relax. The National Foundation Day, which had been prepared alongside the king’s birthday celebration, was only a few months away.
Like any country, National Foundation Day was one of the biggest events, and with the queen from Makaeri overseeing it, if anything went wrong, there would be unpleasant suspicions.
She couldn’t afford to let all her hard work so far go to waste. Thus, Elfreda poured all her energy into preparing for the foundation celebration, until one day.
“Lady Wyann sent a letter to the queen.”
Surprised, Elfreda lifted her head from the desk with a puzzled look.
Illene handed her the letter, and as Elfreda opened it, she saw a few lines written inside.
[Your Majesty, I hope you are doing well. I’ve heard that you’ve been quite busy with the preparations for the foundation celebration. If it’s not an inconvenience, I’d like to visit and have a cup of tea with you. If you are too busy, please feel free to decline.
Your loyal servant, Harriet Wyann]
After reading the letter, Elfreda’s eyes widened. She read the contents again and again, unable to believe it. But no matter how many times she read it, it was clear that Lady Wyann wanted to visit Solar Palace. Elfreda’s heart started racing. Illene, watching her, asked curiously.
“What’s the matter, Your Majesty? Is there something wrong in the letter…”
“Lady Wyann wants to have tea with me.”
Elfreda’s voice trembled with excitement as she murmured with a moved face.
“I’ve never received such a letter before, Illene.”
Illene was happy to see Elfreda so excited, but at the same time, she felt a bit of pity. After all, no one in society had ever made an effort to approach her first.
Elfreda wasn’t one to dislike socializing, so it was clear how much she must have longed for a situation like this. But because of that, Illene couldn’t help but feel wary towards Harriet’s kindness.
“I didn’t know you had any kind of relationship with Lady Wyann.”
“Oh, actually, at the last tea gathering, Lady Wyann came along with Countess Wyann.”
“Ah, I see…”
Well, if that’s the case, then it was fine.
Illene felt a little relieved. Honestly, looking past the prejudice that came with being from Makaeri, there was no woman more captivating than Elfreda.
She was warm, thoughtful, and elegant. Just a few words with Elfreda would show that, but the barrier created by her origins was far too strong.
Perhaps Harriet, like Illene, had managed to break through that barrier and recognized Elfreda’s true worth. Thinking that, Illene’s mood lightened. For Elfreda, the more friends she had, the better.
“I’ll check the schedule and find the earliest day I can invite Lady Wyann.”
“Thank you, Illene. And about the National Foundation Day fireworks schedule…”
“Your Majesty.”
At that moment, the familiar voice made Illene’s hair stand on end.
Turning her head with a pale face, she saw Robert smiling at Elfreda before his gaze shifted to meet Illene’s.
Illene’s face turned even paler, and not realizing the situation, Elfreda casually greeted Robert.
“Sir Robert, what brings you here?”
Robert looked at Elfreda again before politely approaching her.
“I’ve brought the documents Your Majesty requested regarding the National Foundation Day.”
“Oh, thank you. But there was no need for you to deliver them in person…”
“It’s not a small matter. There’s nothing more important than what Your Majesty needs.”
Then Robert’s gaze shifted to Illene. Illene flinched with her body trembling.
“Right, Illene?”
“…Ah, right.”
“By the way, Your Majesty,”
Robert looked at Elfreda once more and politely asked,
“If it’s not too much trouble, may I have a conversation with Illene? It’s an important matter.”
