The Male Lead’s Sickly Aide is My Type - Chapter 107.1
Chapter 107.1
“My guess as to who it is…?”
Meeting Marquis Asen’s expectant gaze, Carinne declared.
“It’s me.”
The future of the duchy and her friend’s well-being weren’t things to be weighed against each other. Even with a warning, she couldn’t send her friend into a dangerous situation.
After much thought, Carinne decided to shoulder the risk herself.
It was a bit brazen, but so what? Her looks weren’t anything to scoff at. So, anyone with a conscience couldn’t dismiss it as a complete lie.
“But as you can see, I’m already taken. It’s only natural, isn’t it? Why would the most beautiful woman in the world wait for you? Of course, I’d be seeing someone. So, be satisfied with having seen me and give up.”
Carinne lifted her chin with a confident expression.
Archen, standing beside her, looked back and forth between Marquis Asen and Carinne in apparent shock. He seemed less surprised by Carinne’s confidence and more by the topic of conversation.
“Th-that’s not…”
He started to speak, then covered his face with his hand, muttering under his breath.
“Am I the only sane person here…?”
He was indignant. To be lumped in with the marquis! She, at least, had a valid reason!
“….”
The marquis, on the other hand, remained silent. His face was unnaturally contorted.
Had she gone too far? Calling herself the most beautiful woman in the world… that wasn’t something a sane person would say, was it? Wait. What had she just said? The most beautiful woman in the world? Be satisfied with having seen her and give up?
“Ugh!”
What was she thinking?! Just as a wave of belated embarrassment washed over Carinne…
“Bwahahaha!” A loud laugh erupted—a hearty sound emanating from deep within. So, that contorted face had been… suppressed laughter? It seemed so. The marquis wiped tears from his eyes as he continued to laugh.
“Fine. I’ll tell you what I know. I like that confident attitude.”
True to his eccentric nature, his point of interest was also abnormal. Anyone else would have been offended and thrown her out, but the marquis was clapping and laughing. Well, as long as it worked. Carinne wiped the sweat from her brow, relieved.
“So, what kind of gifts does the Blue Crow Merchant Guild leader like?”
“I don’t know.”
“What?”
“I didn’t say I knew what gifts he liked.”
That jerk! After she’d played along like a clown! If the marquis hadn’t quickly continued, Carinne would have sprung from her seat like a jack-in-the-box.
“What I do know is how to meet him.”
The marquis’s explanation went as follows: The Blue Crow Merchant Guild leader was indeed a curmudgeon who didn’t meet just anyone. However, even though he had a private life, and if they timed it right when he wasn’t at the guild headquarters, they could get a chance to meet him.
When asked when that would be, the marquis suggested visiting a tavern near the capital where the guild leader frequented around sunset. Apparently, the Blue Crow Merchant Guild leader’s hobby and leisure activity was spending time incognito.
“How did you find that out?”
“I frequent that tavern, too. We’ve shared a few drinks and ended up exchanging personal stories.”
The marquis then added that if they did meet the guild leader, they should keep his involvement a secret.
“He won’t be pleased if he knows I told you.”
“Understood.”
The marquis also described the guild leader’s appearance, where he usually sat, what he wore to the tavern, and so on. Carinne and Archen listened attentively from the opposite sofa.
Thus, after sunset, the two of them sought out the Blue Crow Merchant Guild leader’s favorite tavern. The tavern was tucked away in a secluded alley.
It was a narrow, dirty, and dark passage, barely wide enough for one person to pass through, with trash strewn across the ground. Amidst the shacks, they found the tavern the marquis had described.
The dilapidated building lacked even a sign, let alone windows. There was only a single door in the wall. Carinne cautiously opened the door and entered.
In the dim light of a wall-mounted lamp, a few figures in robes sat scattered around. Carinne and Archen, forewarned by the marquis, wore dark robes themselves. Thanks to this, they attracted no attention. Carinne ordered two drinks and headed to the far right corner.
Just as the marquis had described, a figure in a deep-hooded black robe sat nursing a drink. When their drinks arrived, Carinne placed one in front of the guild leader.
“Care for a drink?”
The guild leader was a middle-aged man. He glanced at Carinne, then picked up the drink and emptied it. Carinne waited until he’d finished before placing the other drink down.
“Have this one, too.”
The guild leader emptied the second glass as well.
