Chapter 106.2

“He doesn’t seem like a bad person.”

Archen, however, seemed to have swallowed the man’s words whole. He liked being called her husband that much?

“Come on, snap out of it! It’s all an act.”

“Did you find any information?”

“No. They said they didn’t have anything.”

Archen explained that his guild had also come up empty-handed. Apparently, the owner of the Blue Crow Merchant Guild was notoriously reclusive, and information about him was scarce.

Carinne deflated as her last hope crumbled.

“Where do we turn now? I can’t go back empty-handed.”

“Let’s try a different approach. Charity begins at home, as they say. How about seeking help from your countrymen?”

“My countrymen?”

“Radian is a large nation. Its capital is teeming with diplomats from all over the world. There must be an Esmeril ambassador among them.”

It made sense. Diplomats would be well-versed in the affairs of their assigned countries. The Blue Crow Merchant Guild was one of the two largest in Radian, so an Esmeril diplomat based here was likely to know something about its owner.

“Alright. Let’s go.”

After some inquiries, Carinne and Archen located the Esmeril embassy in Radian.

Tucked between opulent buildings, the two-story structure was surprisingly modest. Unlike their earlier encounter, revealing her status as a princess of the Second Duchy granted them immediate access. The diplomat was out, so they waited in a receiving room.

Moments later, heavy footsteps echoed on the stairs, and a familiar face appeared.

“The newlyweds! What brings you here?”

Oh, the irony. The Esmeril diplomat was none other than the crazy man from earlier.

An attendant hurried over to whisper in the man’s ear, who listened as he removed his coat. The message summarized that the Second Duchy’s princess and her advisor had been waiting for him.

“I thought you looked familiar. An Esmeril native! Let’s introduce ourselves properly. I am Marquis Asen.”

He extended a hand, but Carinne ignored it and took Archen’s instead.

“Let’s go.”

Marquis Asen or not, a man obsessed with finding the most beautiful woman in the world, was unlikely to know anything useful about the Blue Crow Merchant Guild.

“If you’ve come this far, you must need something from me.”

“No. We took a wrong turn.”

Carinne tugged at Archen’s hand. He looked at her, questioning.

“Are you returning to Esmeril?”

Leaving now meant abandoning any hope of meeting the guild owner.

Carinne and Archen had come to the embassy as a last resort. They couldn’t contact him, couldn’t meet him directly. Their only option was to bring a gift he’d appreciate, but without knowing what that was, their chance would be lost forever.

She scowled.

There were no other options. Returning to Esmeril empty-handed was unthinkable. Reluctantly, she took Marquis Asen’s hand.

“Carinne Trisha. Princess of the Second Duchy.”

“Archenas.”

Marquis Asen waited expectantly, likely anticipating Archen to elaborate on his lineage. When neither of them spoke further, the Marquis looked surprised, but he didn’t press the matter.

“What brings a princess of the Duchy here?”

“I wish to meet the owner of the Blue Crow Merchant Guild, but he refuses to see me. I believe I could meet him if I knew what kind of gift he’d appreciate. Do you happen to know what he likes?”

“I might be able to help you with that.”

The Marquis’s ready answer took Carinne aback.

Could it be this easy?

But nothing in life was ever truly easy. He settled into a chair, steepled his fingers, and rested his chin on them.

“I can’t simply tell you. I need to know something in return. Back at the guild, when you heard me talking, who came to mind?”

So it comes to this. What a persistent man. Beside her, Arken looked bewildered.

“What do you mean?”

“It’s… something.”

She couldn’t reveal Iris’s name here, but making up a name was risky. What if this man did something to her? Perhaps it was better to give Iris’s name and warn her in advance. Still, could she betray her friend for the sake of the Duchy?

“Fine. I’ll tell you.”

Weighing her friend’s safety against the Duchy’s future, Carinne made her decision.
