The Male Lead’s Sickly Aide is My Type - Chapter 105.2
Chapter 105.2
Carinne fumed, stamping her foot. The gatekeeper glanced at her and curtly replied,
“And we don’t make appointments for people with unclear identities. Do you think I’ll believe you came from some strange country called Emerald or Esmere or whatever?”
“Esmeril! I’m the princess of the Second Duchy of Esmeril!”
“Same difference.”
“Ugh!”
It was humiliating how insignificant her home country seemed. Carinne was about to kick the gate when Archen grabbed her shoulder.
“There must be a way. Let’s wait a moment.”
“What way? They won’t even listen!”
The gatekeeper didn’t take Carinne seriously, seemingly dismissing her as some wandering con artist. Showing her identification from Esmeril and explaining the long-standing relationship between the Blue Crow Guild and the Second Duchy proved useless.
The gatekeeper parroted,
“Make an appointment and come back.”
But they wouldn’t answer when she tried to make an appointment!
“Let me try.”
Archen stepped forward, and Carinne nodded. He approached the gatekeeper and bowed his head respectfully.
“You must be working hard in this heat.”
“Huh?”
The gatekeeper, taken aback by the unexpected politeness, looked bewildered.
“While the others in the guild work comfortably inside, you’re out here alone. It must be difficult.”
“Hmm, well, not that difficult.”
The gatekeeper stroked his chin and coughed. Archen continued in a courteous tone.
“It is. Escorting the princess here, I realized working outside on a hot day like this is inhumane.”
“That’s true. You’ve had a hard time, too.”
“So…”
Archen pulled something from his pocket and pressed it into the gatekeeper’s hand. Judging by the yellowish gleam, it was a gold coin used in Radian. When did he prepare that? Ever the thorough one. Carinne watched, inwardly impressed.
Archen patted the gatekeeper’s shoulder as if they were close friends, yet maintained his respectful demeanor, a true professional.
“Let’s help each other out.”
“….”
“Please inform them that we are from the Second Duchy of Esmeril.”
“Not taking it.”
The gatekeeper clicked his tongue and tossed the gold coin to the ground. Archen stared at it, his face falling.
“Excuse me?”
“I don’t accept bribes. Do you think this place is some swindler’s den like where you come from? Get lost!”
Archen stared intently at the gatekeeper before picking up the gold coin and returning to Carinne.
“It didn’t work.”
“I guess not.”
So, even advanced countries were different. Carinne grumbled, kicking a pebble.
“Hey, move along if you’re done!”
Someone waiting behind them pushed past Carinne and Archen. The gatekeeper immediately blocked their path.
“Do you have an appointment?”
“Well, I usually do… but I forgot this time.”
“No appointment, no entry.”
“Hehe, that’s why I brought this.”
The person presented a package and whispered something in the gatekeeper’s ear.
“This is something the Guild Master cherishes…”
“Hmm. I see. You may enter.”
The gatekeeper accepted the package and allowed the person to pass. It was absurd. Carinne burst out,
“What! You said you don’t accept bribes!”
“I don’t. That was a gift for the Guild Master.”
“So you accept that but not this?”
“I’d be fired if caught taking bribes. And when the Guild Master receives gifts, I get scraps. That’s much better than a few gold coins. If you’re unhappy, bring a gift for the Guild Master yourselves.”
Apparently, advanced countries had a far more complex bribery system. Carinne and Archen gave up on persuasion and returned to the carriage.
“What should we do?”
“It seems our only option is to find out what the Guild Master likes.”
Archen suggested visiting Radian’s information guild.
They could guess and bring a potential gift, but they couldn’t risk being turned away for bringing something the Guild Master disliked. They found two reputable information guilds. They decided to split up and inquire about the Guild Master’s preferences.
Carinne exited the carriage first. As she walked towards the reception desk inside the information guild, she saw a man shouting.
“You’re telling me you still haven’t found her?”
The man, with a stern expression, pressed the receptionist. He must have requested something incredibly important. She lined up behind him. The receptionist, sweating profusely, tried to appease the man.
“Yes, I apologize. The request is rather… unique. There’s room for subjective interpretation.”
“Even so, it’s been so long since I made the request. It’s absurd that you haven’t found anything.”
The man spoke earnestly. He must have made a very demanding request. Carinne impatiently waited for her turn.
“Why don’t you know who the most beautiful woman in the world is?”
She couldn’t believe her ears.
The request was ludicrous, made even more so by the man’s self-assured tone. Who would request such a thing from an information guild? What a preposterous person.
“Crazy.”
Inside the information guild, Carinne’s words echoed clearly, reaching everyone’s ears.
