The Male Lead’s Sickly Aide is My Type - Chapter 100.1
Chapter 100.1
Carinne woke the next morning to find Archen gone. His whereabouts, however, were no mystery. Throwing open the study door, she found him engrossed in his work, a new pair of spectacles perched on his nose.
“You’re awake.”
His previous glasses had been oval; these were rectangular with softened edges, giving him a sharper look.
“Your glasses arrived already?”
“I went to collect them.”
‘So that’s why.’
She had specifically requested the optician to delay delivery as long as possible, and they had promised a minimum of three days. Clearly, they hadn’t anticipated Archen fetching them himself. Neither had she. It hadn’t occurred to her to warn the optician.
Faced with Archen in person, the shopkeeper likely felt obligated to hand over the finished spectacles.
‘…Wait. How did he even get there if he can’t see?’
“How did you get to the shop if you can’t see?”
“I took a servant.”
“Wow…”
Carinne was impressed by his determination. Archen adjusted his glasses and looked up at her.
“The optician said something rather odd. He asked why I’d come so early, claiming the glasses weren’t ready… even though they were clearly right there.”
“Ahaha… I wonder why he’d say that?”
Even though Archen said nothing, he seemed to have caught on. Embarrassed, Carinne twirled a strand of hair and wandered to the window.
Summer had arrived, the sun blazing in a clear blue sky dotted with small, boat-like clouds. The air was still. The vast fields shimmered under the summer sun, dotted with clusters of wildflowers. Beyond, a verdant forest stretched to the horizon, a picturesque scene that felt almost heavenly.
‘I want to go out there. I want to be one with nature.’
An idea struck her.
“Archen, let’s go on a picnic!”
It was the perfect solution: enjoying nature and giving him a much-needed break.
“We can pack a basket with sandwiches and fruit and go to the lakeshore.”
Just as Archen frowned slightly, clearly about to object, she quickly placed a finger to her lips.
“Don’t say no. Please. It’s my wish.”
This wasn’t a whim; she’d longed to picnic with him. The desire had taken root when she’d convinced Marta to attend the council meeting.
“I’m serious. Remember what I said before we started dating? When I was going to see Marta? I said it was perfect picnic weather.”
Archen’s frown softened. His quill stilled, and his blue eyes grew distant, lost in thought.
“You remember?”
“…I do.”
“So we’ll go?”
Instead of answering, Archen set down his quill.
“We must return before nightfall.”
“Because of work?”
He clearly intended to return early to continue working, but Carinne wouldn’t allow it. She sat at the side table and picked up a quill. She’d fallen asleep the night before and felt guilty. Finishing their work would ease her conscience.
“Just this once. It’ll be better if we finish everything first.”
Archen had no response to that.
Carinne quickly scanned the documents. With both of them working, they finished in no time.
“I’ll ask Marie to prepare a picnic basket.”
She practically flew down the stairs and instructed Marie to prepare sandwiches and fruit.
She requested a special ingredient for the sandwiches. Basket in hand, she took Archen’s hand and led him outside. The weather was even more glorious than it had appeared from the window: a brilliant sky, fresh air, and warm sunshine.
As they walked, humming a tune, Archen asked.
“Are you that happy?”
“Yes. I’m incredibly happy.”
She hopped like a frog, and he smiled, a pure, bright smile like the white clouds in the sky. Carinne smiled back.
‘I wish time would stop right now.’
As they walked hand-in-hand along the path to the lake, the same thought echoed in her mind.
‘May this moment last forever. May all hardships and sorrows melt away like snow. May misfortune never find us, like the wind passing over the mountains.’
The lakeshore was deserted and tranquil.
Carinne spread a blanket in the shade and set down the basket. She took out a sandwich and offered it to Archen.
“Here. Lunch.”
