Saintess - Chapter 37
Chapter 37

—
The next morning, Agnes only stared at the table, her expression a blank slate.
Pickled vegetables that had gotten much too soft, apples that had become all dried up. That was the entire family’s full meal.
The count had promised that he would take care of her family, but this was all the food that’s left in the house.
She had been well fed at the count’s residence until just a day ago. In the short time that she had to return to this life, it was impossible to adapt.
She stayed at the count’s residence for three months.
In the meantime, Agnes felt as if she had become a completely different person.
“Oh, how easy it is to fall.”
“Fall…”
“You went to heaven alone, but how does it feel now?”
“……”
Agnes did not reply.
As her mother-in-law was chewing on the dry apple, she yawned loudly and began to doze off.
Agnes looked around the house she was now in. It was no different than a pigsty. She could not hold the tears back.
Was the count’s residence truly heaven?
Then the count, the owner of that place… Was he God?
If that’s so, could it be that she herself had thrown away the opportunity to be enveloped in God’s embrace?
Agnes was drowning in a sea of confusion.
Gradually, her gaze became terribly venomous.
That husband, who had subjected her to such cruel abuse. That mother-in-law, who did nothing but watch from the sidelines.
She agonized for so long, and she nursed herself for too long.
In the past, she had endured the indiscriminate harassment of the senile blind woman.
But despite it all, she tried so hard to keep them both from starving.
“Awful. Everything is so awful…”
Agnes murmured this to herself over and over, her complexion deathly pale.
It looked as if she was on the brink of losing her own mind.
It was at that moment.
Her mother-in-law was dozing off, but suddenly, she jolted awake.
And after jumping up to her feet abruptly, she rushed straight to Agnes and indiscriminately wrenched her fine hair.
It felt like her scalp was being torn. Agnes screamed in pain.
Agnes fell to the floor and her mother-in-law climbed over her body. The old woman was using all the strength there was in her scrawny frame.
Then, she dug her nails into the cheeks of her young and beautiful daughter-in-law mercilessly.
Another desperate scream broke out of Agnes’s lips.
Even though she knew that there would no longer be anyone who’d help her, Agnes screamed so loudly that it’s as if her throat would bleed.
“Shut up. Nasty b*tch.”
“Uuuuck! H-Help, please!”
Agnes howled in pain.
Though the young woman under her had been calling her ‘Mom’ all this time, the old woman forcefully dug into her cheeks and made them swell greatly.
Even breathing was too difficult underneath the weight of the old woman who was completely pressing down on her.
What’s more tragic than this pain, however, was this situation in itself. Neither salvation hope could be found anywhere.
‘Should I just die?’
Life had always been harsh for Agnes.
Before she met her current husband, she went around the brothels and begged for alms.
Of course, no one willingly handed anything to a girl who wasn’t even selling herself.
When she had thought that she might just die from starvation, her husband appeared in front of her.
He was a man who’s much older than her, but at that time, she considered him to be her savior.
However, in retrospect, what he brought her could never be called salvation.
It was merely despair with a new face.
She had to endure her husband’s perverted acts each and every night as he treated her worse than a prostitute.
Besides that, traces of his violence throughout the years were irrevocably embedded upon her body.
The old woman’s wrinkled hands moved downwards, this time, wrapping themselves around Agnes’s slender neck.
Agnes’s consciousness flickered in and out as the old woman’s grip tightened more and more and more.
Suddenly, she thought of the bird that had been trampled to death because it was not strong enough.
If she were to die now and live again, perhaps she could be reborn just a little stronger.
Maybe it would be better to just close her eyes now.
Feeling as though she was completely falling apart, gradually, her body became limp.
“Don’t ever die willingly again. You have to promise.”
But at that moment, a man’s voice resounded in her ears.
It was like heaven’s revelation. It was the promise she made with him before.
Raon made her promise that she would never try to die willingly.
She did not know the reason behind that promise, but even so, she nodded and said yes.
“I-I don’t…”
With a trembling voice, even as she did now know who it was directed to, she uttered a plea.
“I don’t want to die…”
In her empty eyes, light entered for an instant and revealed a will to live.
“If someone has to die… then it should be you…! Aaaaack!”
Agnes’s struggle intensified.
The two women’s positions were soon reversed.
Managing to gain the upper hand, Agnes burst into laughter as she strangled the old woman.
Oh, how easy it actually is to trample upon you.
All this time, she had just allowed herself to be abused. What had she been so afraid of?
“Mom… It’s been hard trying to survive here in hell, hasn’t it?”
“Kkkkgh!”
“This time, I’ll send you off now… to paradise.”
Agnes closely watched her mother-in-law, who was spewing out white foam from her mouth.
She pressed down harder on the old woman’s neck, and slowly, the groaning and writhing beneath her subsided soon enough.
The sensation of taking a life was oh so ephemeral.
That day, Agnes killed her family.
It was her first act of murder.
