VI.
White chrysanthemums to honor the souls of the departed. These flowers were neatly placed next to the tombstones.
It was here at the rear garden of the grand cathedral that the souls of the deceased clergymen and devout believers were laid to rest.
And here, too, was the eternal resting place of Raon’s family.
“Mother, Father. I’m here.”
Raon prayed in front of his parents’ graves for a moment, and after doing so, he slowly raised his head.
Then, he added.
“How have you been, Agnes?”
Agnes, his younger sister, had also been buried in the family’s mausoleum.
It was originally impossible for someone who had taken their own life to rest eternally with God’s blessing. However, taking pity upon Raon as he had faced many tragedies, the Pope especially allowed his younger sister to be buried here.
“You must be resting well now. I can only hope that this is so.”
Truthfully, he wasn’t very worried about his parents.
They had been gentle and warm people.
Those who knew the former Count and Countess Toulouse would have agreed wholeheartedly.
The couple had lived their whole lives abiding by the commandments, and they were very admirable people.
However, he was worried about his younger sister, Agnes.
Although she was fortunately buried here, he continued to fear that her soul was wandering through the darkness of hell, suffering in all eternity.
Thinking about this, Raon’s expression darkened for a moment.
Then, he recalled a memory he had with his mother.
To be exact, it was a lesson that she once imparted to him. He had been very young back then.
While he was playing with a toy gun that his father made for him, he had accidentally hit a bird’s nest. And, the bird that fell from the nest was a pregnant mother bird.
Shocked, Raon immediately ran to his mother, crying.
After calming Raon down, she built a grave for the dead mother bird and her prematurely hatched baby.
“Mother! I want to pray to God now. I need to do it now because I wish to repent. If I do that, God will forgive me, right?”
“Goodness, Raon. Everyone makes mistakes, but repenting all the time is not the right thing to do.”
Unable to understand her words, Raon blinked back at her.
Then, his mother hugged the young Raon tightly in her arms and explained.
“First of all, you must pray and apologize for causing the deaths of the two birds. Only then will you follow that with repentance. Raon, do you understand what I mean?”
“I don’t think so, not yet, Mother.”
“For as long as we have been born unto this world as weak human beings, we all have no choice but to sin. However, the notion of repenting to God after hurting others is wrong. Penitence is of no use unless the one you had hurt forgives you first, Raon.”
“Yes, I understand, Mother. If I make a mistake and do something bad, I’ll make sure to apologize first.”
“That’s a good boy.”
The mother kissed her son’s plump cheek.
Then, she whispered the words, ‘I love you,’ into his ear.
“Haa…”
As he reminisced about the past, a low sigh slipped through his lips.
Why, of all things, did he have to desperately remember his mother’s words now?
* * *
Days passed.
At some point, Raon stopped praying in repentance for his sins.
He did not ask God for forgiveness, nor did he pray at all.
He had also stopped harming himself through the method of making his thighs bleed.
This was because he also realized that self-harm would not help anything.
The only thing that still continued was his nightly visit to Agnes.
With his manhood ever-erect,
Thrust!
The rock-hard pillar pounded deep into the woman’s flesh, eliciting a sharp sound.
Sucking the sleeping woman’s bosom, Raon’s rhythmic movements kept going on without fail.
Although he had already climaxed two times before this, he was still very much focused on his actions without any signs of exhaustion.
“Kgh, nngh!”
Just before he felt his arousal pushing out with full force, he pulled out of Agnes and c*mmed over her smooth abdomen.
S*men shot out, landing badly all over her.
Illuminated by the daybreak’s dim glow, her naked body was seen to be covered with his c*m.
Raon breathed heavily over her, and he soon fell atop her limp body.
As their chests met, the warm s*men that had landed on her was smeared over him as well. But still, he pulled Agnes into a deep embrace, holding her even more tightly.
Amidst all this, she continued to sleep like a doll.
In a little while, the sun would rise.
Before dawn, he needed to quickly wash both Agnes and himself, then he would have to slip out of her room.
Yet even as that predetermined time slowly inched forward, Raon pushed it away from his mind.
“Agnes.”
While whispering the woman’s name with such tenderness, he swept her brilliant silver hair with the softest touch. As he did so, there was the most pathetic expression on his face.
Soon, Raon laid a brief kiss upon her forehead, as if to give her a blessing.
As though engrossed entirely, he stared at Agnes’s face without saying anything for a long while.
“Forgive me… Please forgive me…”
In the end, Raon began to sob.
Raon no longer sought forgiveness from God.
Instead, he apologized constantly only to the sleeping Agnes.
