Chapter 27

Day by day, Agnes became healthier.
She gained more weight in a good way, both her cheeks were colored with a pretty apricot hue, and her hair shone more abundantly and brilliantly than ever.
With a mix of fear and boredom, she went on with her daily life.
The regrettable thing was that she gradually adapted to this routine, which was little to no different from a life of confinement.
She couldn’t help but think that a human being’s disposition was quite shrewd, in its own way.
Even though she missed her family terribly, the comfort she received in the count’s manor inevitably tamed Agnes’s body.
Every night before this, she trembled in fear that Raon would come to her.
Recently however, Agnes had been sleeping deeply.
It felt as if this large manor had become completely hers.
The servants still did not stop whispering behind her back while ridiculing her, but they never did so carelessly in front of her.
As if there was an invisible barrier between them, they never crossed this tacit line.
The one routine that Agnes looked forward to the most were her regular strolls outside.
She was given the chance to take a stroll outside twice a day, during the morning and during the evening. She felt relieved that she could get out of this suffocating room, even if only for a little while.
Today, as always, she was under the patronage of the count.
With the sunlight gently pouring down from the heavens, Agnes went on her morning stroll.
“My goodness.”
But right then, her eyes went wide as she found something.
Under the verdant zelkova tree, she saw one small, quivering bird.
It was a newborn baby bird that hadn’t even opened its eyes properly yet. It was still breathing, but weakly.
“S-Someone, please help!”
Agnes shouted, but the servants did not even acknowledge her.
Just as they always did, they only watched Agnes from afar.
In the end, Agnes herself knelt down on the dirt floor and reached for the baby bird.
She had no means to return it to its nest, but the least she could do was to bring it back to her room.
She empathized with the bird, thinking that it was all alone and separated from its family, just like she was.
But before she could reach the bird—
“Kyaah!”
At that moment, a scream broke out from Agnes’s lips.
A male attendant with tanned skin stepped directly on the bird that was lying pitifully on the ground.
The frail bird was instantly crushed under the man’s shoe, and bright red blood sputtered onto Agnes’s face.
The smell of metallic blood hovered on the tip of her nose. In vain, Agnes vomited.
“W-What in the world are you doing right now…!”
“Shut up. You are nothing but a harlot.”
The male attendant spat on her.
Then, he moved his bloody shoe and rubbed it off on the floor.
“Since you’re a filthy harlot, you have such a way of shaking your hips, don’t you? All you have to do is make a baby with the Count, and this damn drought will be over. I can’t believe you’re taking a leisurely walk. Hah.”
No matter how poorly she had lived, never had she heard such insulting remarks hurled at her.
As anger rose within her, she clenched her hands into fists.
“Wow, look at this woman. What a sight.”
But the taunts of the attendant got worse and worse.
It seemed like he was the leader amongst the attendants. The others merely watched nervously as the situation unfolded, but no one came forward and dissuaded him from continuing his actions.
“Why don’t I violate you myself and make you carry a child in that womb of yours, hm? In that way, our noblest Count will not have to tarnish himself, and I’ll become the hero who’ll save the Empire from this crisis. What do you think?”
“S-Stay away from me!”
“Don’t you worry. I’ll get you pregnant right away.”
“Ack!”
The man kicked Agnes squarely with his blood-stained shoe.
In an instant, Agnes’s body fell backwards.
She heaved deeply, instinctively letting herself collapse.
The hems of her holy robes rolled up, and her pale, slim legs were soon revealed.
The man smiled insidiously, reaching down with a big hand. He caressed her smooth thigh right then.
It felt as if a snake was slinking across her skin. Chills ran down her spine.
“Now, let’s see what your hole looks like.”
The man spread Agnes’s thighs, wide.
She shook her head violently, but—shhhhrk—she heard the robe being torn beneath her.
“Aack! H-Help! Please help me!”
In the middle of the beautiful rear garden, the cry of the woman rang out.
But no one stepped forward to help her.
Without even a moment to let Agnes feel her despair sinking in, the man leaned down and stuck his nose against Agnes’s underwear, sniffing heavily.
Everything that he did disgusted her so terribly—to the point that she thought it would be better if she was being beaten and tortured by Raon.
As Agnes struggled on the dirt floor, resisting with all her might, her white, pristine, holy robe quickly became a rag.
“Perhaps because it’s the smell of a harlot, but I’m already plentifully tempte— hiiek!”
At that moment, a huge shadow fell over the attendant’s face.
Standing against the sun’s brilliance, the man who appeared aimed the sharp tip of his sword at the attendant’s neck.
“Y-Your Lordship!”
“Just what are you doing in my mansion?”
The owner of the cynical voice was Raon, the master of this beautiful mansion.
Against the sun’s rays, the sword glinted beautifully and dangerously.
Though ornamental, it was nonetheless a blade that could instantly slice through the attendant’s blood vessels if Raon were to push it a little further.
“Y-Your Lordship, please, d-don’t… I-I have committed a crime worthy of death!”
It was the first time that the gentle count had ever pointed a sword at anyone at all.
